I needed a truck for the winter [Chicago] last November. I'm disabled so it's important not to get stuck; a truck fits my bill. Found a '11 Chevy Traverse at a car lot. Looked really clean [which it was] and didn't have oil leaks that I could see. 125k on the clock, I wanted to drive it before anything else, why waste time needlessly? Guy got the keys, we jumped in and got ready to go. Engine started right up, all gauges read proper, pulled out and drove. Holy cow I couldn't believe I was driving a Chevy 3. 6 V-6 with a 6-speed, this thing got up and moved No race car, but impressive. Cabin was VERY quiet, no squeeks or rattles. AT ALL. Drove straight and true, stopped the same. Everything worked and worked well. I bought this Chevy on the spot. I still have to remind myself almost every day that I drive a later-model Chevy. I did put in a new battery about 3 months ago. That's it. Not even a burnt light bulb. Here's the thing= I think this Chevy was BUILT correctly. From day one. The original owner took good care of this truck, you could see the love where ever hands would touch; clean and like new, almost I really think it's sad what the General has fallen to. That my truck is the exception, instead of the rule. PS My A/C blows cold, too

Dear Scotty: If YOU were to fix the A/C where its leaking behind the dash, couldn't you MOVE the behind-the-dash parts to the engine compartment, extending the hoses if necessary? The bill would still be HUGE, but if the system broke again, at least the A/C parts'd be accessible, so the labor would be much less than the book time it needed for a repair. I KNOW why GM. moved those parts behind the dash. Faced with a HUGE repair, Most would trade the truck in/sell it at a loss privately. THERE's a book for you--what OTHER Service-'Timebombs' await the motoring Public? Scotty's Service-labor 'Time-Bombs'. If enough Chevy pick-up owners complained-about Service-Racketeering in A/C other Systems you might get GM to do a RECALL, leading to out-of-warranty [--but Still 'covered'] R & R of GM vehicles having this problem.

Hey Scotty hope youre doing well, staying safe. So my parents are considering buying an Acura RDX tech package from a sheehy dealership with 80k miles on it for 17k. any comments? Concerns we want to specifically examine. Theres a 3 day buy back guarantee so well have time to get it inspected fully from a reputable mechanic we know personally. Theyve driven it and love the drive and tech. Do you have any recommendations for alternatives? Im concerned about the transmission being a Honda made vehicle with 80k miles. What do you think? Best, Dying Alone

Of course GM will say the customer did an illegal mod by added their own refrigerant. and not blame it as an evaporator issue at all. Copied from a Google search, The inhalation of high concentrations of R134a vapour may cause temporary central nervous system depression, with narcosis, lethargy and anaesthetic effects. Continued breathing of high concentrations of R134a vapours may produce cardiac irregularities, unconsciousness and death. Yes, I own a Silverado (2014.

Your absolutely right about poor design, but gm is not alone and you should know and state that. Ever since they started increasing the angle on the windshield on cars and trucks for aero dynamics, they moved the evaporator for the outside to inside the car. The increased angle also caused the need for air bags because people were smashing their foreheads on the windshield. New evaporators are made with thinner walls to increase efficiency and so fail more often.

Scotty has a video about the 1988-1998 Chevy Silverado/GMC Sierra. Imo, the generation of trucks I mentioned are excellent I bought a 1995 GMC Sierra in 1998 with 30, 000 miles, standard can, the 350 V8 engine and automatic transmission. I sold it when gas prices got outrageous in 2008. Looking back, I wish I never got rid of her. She was the best truck I ever had, even better than the Toyota Tacoma I bought to replace her with.

There is actually a much easier way to replace the evaporator, takes about 45 minutes and then money for parts. It involves taking the glove box out, and then cutting the box that holds the evaporator with a sawzall, removing it and replacing, and then plastic welding it back together. Of course though, he's a mechanic and they all rip you off. If I was this person I would be doing it myself.

My 2005 Chevy Silverado's air conditioner will just stop working but if you shut off the engine and restart it it works fine again and may not do it again for weeks or months. It has done it since I bought it in 2008. I had is to several shops and no one can find the problem. I only have 72. 000 miles on it and it has had good maintenance with oil changes every 3000 miles.

I think at that point I would've gone ahead and put the 20 dollar refrigerant in and sold the truck without mentioning the AC is screwed. Really though if this is a common issue GM needs to be recalling it, 5 year old truck with less than 100 grand on the clock shouldn't be having catastrophic failures. You should do these in depth diagnosis and repair videos more often Scotty
