Here\'s Why Smart People Buy Cheap Hondas Lesley: I bought a brand new CRV in 1999. A Japanese built RHD. Without doubt best car I ever owned. I had to auction it off when it 440000 klms. Only reason I sold it was the fact I treated it to a full dealer service all fluids were changed. Sadly the dealer didnt fill up the transmission with enough fluid and they killed the box. Very sad. I had to change the thermostat at 180000klms. I got the new one mixed up with the old one. We had to boil it to see which was the new one because the old one was perfect. Just awesome engineering.

I think a lot of vehicles will go a long time if you take care of them. Some were just junk from the beginning. Grandmother bought a 2000 Taurus from me new in Houston when I sold cars. That thing was hit by a Purple Heart truck, lost oil driving due to filter not being put on(dont even ask, went thousands of miles without an oil change and literally had none in it(dont ask lol, was used by my mom, my aunt, and my brother. Sold it 14 years later with 114-15k on it. Not very high mileage but you cant kill that Duratec. From what I remember things replaced were a torque converter, spark plugs and wires, and some coils. Car was a trooper. My 2004 non heritage f150 was sold near 127k miles and had minimal work as well. All things still worked. Now fast forward to the Five Hundred and thats where it all goes down hill. The 2010 and up Taurus are complete trash.

Dear Scotty. My 1997 Toyota Camry is still running after high mileage. When I got the car, it had 197k miles and I can tell you that by the end of the week, I will hit 330K MILESThere are some repairs that I would love to ask you about on how to fix because most mechanics tell me I should just drive it till the wheels fall off. Just keep oil in it and change the fluids because any repairs will be more than the car is worth. But its at that point that I want to do the repairs myself. For 1. Fuel Pump needs to be changed 2. I want to fix the engine seals to stop the leaking. they said one leak would be expensive because they would have to drop the transmission to get at the engine. but I want to do this myself. Any advice?

I will always regret trading in my old 2004 CRV. It had 145000 miles on it. It still ran PERFECTLY. I stayed on top of the maintenance near obsessively. The ONLY thing that ever went wrong with it was the upper radiator hose went bad. It cost just a few dollars to fix. The AWD system still worked as good as new. I put Blizzak snow tires on it 4 years before I traded it in. For some reason near NONE of the thick tread on those snow tires ever wore off. Every single thing about the vehicle save for the UV damage fogged headlights ran like new. The dealer I traded it at sold it the next day. I still see it driving around. I traded it on a 2018 CRV.

Hi Scotty, I recently replaced my serpentine belt on my 2006 Pontiac vibe. I did not replace the belt tensioner and feel I have lost some power. Today I went to the grocery store and when to start my car lights came on but no crank, new battery post good. Shook car looked for burnt wires, looked good, got the feeling I should put in neutral and rolled backwards to get the wheels rolling, stopped and tried starting it and it fired right up. Do I need a new belt tensioner? Is it failing? Not mechanic minded, just a mom who likes to fix things.

My wife and I bought new 2 BMWs (5 series and 6 series. Both sucked Both routinely overheated in normal stop and go traffic (I680 in the San Francisco Bay Area. My radiologist friend bought a new 5 series BMW for his wife; they drove up to the snow from Burbank, California. The electric windows stopped working with the windows down and snow falling. The car interior was filled with snow and mud I have grown out of my desire to impress people with what I drive even though my net worth is in the 8 figures; I now drive a Toyota Prius

Honestly if that engine went out. Put a good used engine in it for less than what a new car would cost. Then it's basically refreshed And ready to go. All those electrical problems can be fixed with wiring/ part replacement. Just got a 92 si Honda Prelude road worthy. Installed my own PS belt. Hooked up my own vtec. Shocks struts springsThermostat. Fixed PS leakMy first manual car. Not hard at all actually once you recognize each part you're Workin on and it's purpose. It's growing on me

My 1997 CR-V with pretty much the same mileage (480, 000 km) is 3 years older and is still working perfectly fine. Changed rotors, calipers, resonator mid-pipe, mufflers, starter, etc. like what I had expected from a 23 year-young SUV but nothing else unexpected went wrong, except the ignition switch that caused it to stall while on the road. Not even that, I just got a letter from Honda Canada saying that there is a pending recall on the airbag so I'll be getting a brand airbag soon: )

My 2001 Honda CRV (last year of the first gen) is still running good after 333 333km. I'm liviing above the 48th parallel, Up north in Canada. It start like a charm in -45c through salty winter roads and +45c humid summers. Last owners neglected it and used it in the city. I'm not mechanics but iv'e been able to fix this and that and its still allows me to make 1000km round trip from my hometown and college. The radiator fan never worked once. Never had overheating.

Hey ScottyI'm Furious Honda stole my fantastically reliable and much loved low milege 98 CRV as part of the Takata airbag recall in AustraliaThey refused to fix the airbag with the excuse parts are no longer available and offered bottom market value (accoding to my automobile association valuing) plus 400 compensationWe had to give in because without the fix the car could not be reregisteredI'll never forgive & forget this
