The End of Chrysler and Jeeps

The End of Chrysler and Jeeps Andrew Pearson: Good info as always. I remember the Chevy Prizm. yep just a toyota with a chevy name badge. Its weird how the car companies pair up sometimes. I had a Chevy S-10 and discovered that the transmission, and I suspect other parts, were from Isuzu. I had a friend that had a Dodge Horizon I think it was; little 4-door hatchback. When I did a tune-up on it I discovered it had VW stamped on the engine block. weird. One issue though, after mentioning the potential of Renault buying FCA, there were never any direct comments pertaining to Jeep. As a Jeep Wrangler owner as of 2016 Im curious about the evolution of the Jeep brand. FCA has used the Jeep brand as a cash cow; seems like theres more Jeep Wranglers on the road than ever. In my opinion though, Im afraid that between the overreach of do-gooder government regulations, the insistence on over equipping their vehicles with unnecessary, finicky, invasive, not to mention expensive technology; the days of the Jeep brand in any recognizable form are numbered. And depending on who you talk to, Jeep has been moving that way for sometime. As each Jeep model was unveiled, true believers voiced biased concern that every model made after theirs is somehow inferior. all subjective of course. That is why I feel fortunate to have bought my Jeep when I did; in my view the new Wrangler JL is a disaster for many of the reasons aforementioned. yes I know. Im biased. For those that already own a Jeep Wrangler, they traditionally hold their value which is kind of amazing being that CDJR vehicles have perpetually been accused of lower quality, faulty manufacturing, and underwhelming warranty/service support. With the Jeep though I felt somewhat insulated from that. No car company, let alone FCA, can afford to have the image of their flagship money maker tarnished, especially with Wrangler sales levels being as high are and have been for decades. The good news for Jeep is that older Wranglers and for that matter Wrangler parts will command higher than average resale values. Bad news for those that want to buy into the Jeep experience, because they will have to pay to play.

Renault already owned Jeep when it merged with AMC back in the late 70s early 80s and broke away in 1987. They basically killed AMC from the split but got the better deal because they siphoned the tech & intellectual property from Jeep and created their own military Jeep called Auverland ( it sounds like overland when pronounced by French speakers. Unfortunately for Renault, the Jeep under Daimler & FIAT evolved beyond the bouncy, hard riding CJ-5 & CJ-7 which the Auverland still mimics. Renault may have new money to spend if Japan wrenches Nissan away from it with the trial outcomes of Carlos Gosn (the former Renault-Nissan CEO that apparently drove Nissan into the ground while also scooping Japanese money illicitely for his pockets. So many car models under Jeep & Chrysler are gone since FIAT took over. Gone for example are the PT Cruiser and the entire Plymouth and AMC Eagle divisions. Its conceivable they could return if Renault as the new boss wanted to exploit a resurgence of old brands & models.

Time to redress the Renault issue, if it was not for Renault, Nissan would have gone down the pan along with Mitsubishi, AMC was partially rescued by Renault but their board thought they new better and continued with the Pacer. Renault have been going for over 100 years and are one of the few car manufacturers in the world that are making enough money to invest in other manufacturers. Look at GM they got a government hand out and still killed off 1/2 their brands/models. My last car was a Renault with a standard 6 transmission, I replaced that battery at 11 years and the alternator a year later, I traded it in a few months ago it had over 212 K miles on the clock it still had the original exhaust and clutch. Also got a very good px deal for - yes you guessed it, I got another Renault Scotty - when did you last drive or work on a Renault?

My friend has a 2015 Dodge Journey 2. 4 with 98k miles. they use QS 5w 20 and change oil every 4k miles. and follow the Chrysler maintenance and had zero problems except for battery, brakes, one starter that was replaced for free under maintenance contract. I liked it so much for the price 16900 i bought a 2018 SE model. just hit 5k and replaced the oil with QS 5w 20 and mopar filter. So far i like it better than my 2005 ToyotaHighlander 2. 4. I had it for105k miles. had nothing but problems with it. I had a 91 Camry which was the best car i ever owned 232k miles. and a Toyota 1982 truck. 198k miles. Toyota use to build some great cars but like Nissan. which has not been good since they were Datsuns. like my 74 B210. which were slow and cheap. but never broke. IMHO they (Toyota) are over priced. and quality just is not there.

Amazing thing is there a a lot of idiots out there that buy Jeeps because they think it makes them look cool. Small penis syndrome. Especially the ridiculous Gladiator. WTF? All Jeeps are known to be extremely unreliable. Especially since Fiat took them over. I cant wait until these posers start paying over 4 a gallon for gas this summer since they will only be getting about 15mpg if they are lucky. Just need to take the fake EPA MPG rating and subtract between 5-10 mpg to get a real world idea of what your vehicle will actually get. Hope ya got a lot of money to fill that pig up But then again. If you are dumb enough to spend up to 60, 000 for a Jeep than I guess you deserve it.

Scotty, I love your videos Could you do a video on Jeep? They used to be THE thing in the army, but have fallen so far since WWII. I grew up dreaming of owning an old army Jeep. What happened? I bought one Jeep a few years ago, drove it for 4 1/2 months and the engine blew Since then, Ive asked people who own them and get varied responses - most of them bad. While Jeeps are a popular choice where I live in Minnesota, it seems like everybody I talk to has had nothing but problems. I am still in love with the idea of a Jeep, but cant rationalize getting another one. How can such a one-time staple of American ingenuity have gotten to the point it is today?

On the tranny fluid exchange machines- Do NOT use a flush machine on a Nissan. They have a service note telling people that transmission seals have been damaged because of the pressures used. Have to use the old school backyard mechanic method of a simultaneous pump and fill when doing a complete fluid change. BTW, swapped out the Nissan fluid for Valvoline Max Life ATF at 50, 000 miles on my Frontier. It shifts smoother and works better on the Valvoline. Nissan is proud of their ATF and charge 16 a quart. Yikes.

I really dont think this guy knows anything and just talks out of his a doesnt like Chevy but yet they are Toyota but said Toyota was the best earlier guess if you want a car thats going to nickel and dime you to death they sure I worked at a Toyota dealership and would never recommend any Toyota to anyone they are the biggest junk one could ever buy they are so cheaply made and over priced car and they crash test reports dont reflect real life cause small accident they are scraped

Its interesting you said you dont recommend Chevys. We have had a 73 Nova that lasted 18 years, a 91 Lumina that lasted 16 years and 211 thousand miles. We are on our 03 Tahoe which is 170000 MI. None of these had major repairs. All of them had alternators all of them had brakes of course. The Nova did rust Ill give you that. But they were dependable we passed them on to our kids and they serve them well till they crashed them or replace them. GM makes a good product. Still does.

I have been hearing how Jeep is going to go away for the last 20 years. I see more Grand Cherokees on the road than any other SUV. I bought a new one in 2015, and its been the best vehicle I have ever owned. Not one thing wrong with it. Im not saying they dont have problems here or there. But they are as good or better than any other SUV out there. And Jeep isnt going anywhere. Except down the road like a lightning bolt, leaving everyone in the dust, when I floor my 360 H. P. HEMI.
