I have had a '98 LS400 for 20 yrs. Sure you can use cheapest regular gas. It has a knock sensor. You'll lose a little fuel economy and might not have the detergent advantage of top tier gas. There are a few major issues with the car: 1) Timing belt as mentioned, 2) Location of the starter under the intake manifold, 3) EMC is VERY voltage-sensitive so that a single weak battery cell can make it go haywire with flooding, backfiring, various warning lights, etc. 4) PS pump tends to leak and they are right above the alternator. 5)VVTi valves sometimes fail but they are very easy to replace. 6) Air suspension can be problematic after many years. All in all, probably the best production cars of all time. German cars are utter junk by comparison. pleasant to drive and good body work but VERY problematic. That reflects bad engineering, design and quality control.

Dear Scotty, thank you for finally doing justice to this Japanese masterpiece. Mine is slightly different, as it is a 2004 Ultra, with air suspension and a 6 speed transmission. I keep telling myself that the price of gas is offset by the better safety potential of this vehicle. Previously, you made mention of the higher maintenance costs of this V8 relative to the Toyota V6s and the starter position underneath the engine. With the power switch on and with higher quality fuel, the car does accelerate more impressively than in your video. This car is a keeper.

I listened to Scotty when he answered my question! I got an 04 Lexus rx 330 with 70k original miles! made in Japan too! 4500 bucks later It runs like a top. I did the brakes on it in 2 hours! Only thing not working is driver seat heater. Otherwise its great! LISTEN TO SCOTTY! He knows what he talking about!
Oh and we just got Mom an 06 rx 330 with 100k miles.

Just learned that interference engine thing with my 2013 Ford Focus. Timing belt went at 168, 000. I went to my mechanic a year or so ago and asked him to change the belt and he said, Why? It has a timing chain. Just change the oil regularly and you'll be fine. 2/3rds of the miles are highway and the first five years or so I used only full synthetic.

That's one refined automobile.
They must feel real proud making suck fine automobiles.
Americans, look and learn! Who am I kidding? You've had decades to learn from past mistakes.
Japanese learn their lesson. American automakers just abandon their designs for new ones, instead of rethinking and refining it, just like Scotty says.

Thank you Scotty, i used to buy Wawa gas all the time but when i took my old Sable many years ago to Shell i got 2 to 2. 5 mpg better when using Shell vs the Wawa gas. Now that was 15 yrs ago but i was driving 400 miles a week so mpg mattered. Thank goodness i don't work that job or dive that Sable anymore.

For the audio system it only shows the tape deck slot, but the CD changer is hidden. It does look 1990s-ish in a 2000s vehicle, which should have both CD and tape slots visible. Most automakers started removing tape decks since the 2000s, while Lexus removed it completely since the 2011 model year.

Hey Scotty, I need some advice. I've decided to sell my 2006 KIA Rio, it finally bit the dust from all the electrical issues it has been having. I have a budget of 3000 and I cant find any good cars for that price. Too many people in my area trying to sell their crap cars for a premium price.
