We all want to relive the past. and look at those experiences with Rose-colored glasses. But. we can't go back. We can't bring back the dead, but we can remember them and our personal connections/thoughts as well as honor their memory. This technology is, as others have said, a scary situation. If used to create a spectral image of a deceased person (or to bring the dead back as it were, it is disrespectful (to the artist, their memory, and their family/friends) and smacks of greed by the industry promoting it. It is also a bit predatory - preying on the desire to relive the past that older people or those in distress (i. e. an emotional low point or crisis) encounter. It's normal to remember & fondly look back at events; for example, a melody can remind us of a nice time/event in our lives. However, fervently desiring to relive that time/event isn't. I do agree that this technology can be used a fun way though. This could include animation, cartoon characters, and digital creations. The way this world and out society is heading though. darker uses will be the dominate reason this idea progresses and the way it is utilized. It'd be nice to be wrong about this though. Time will tell.

im actually really disappointed that Vocaloids and their type were not mentioned. They prove that is IS a viable form of concert, especially for those that cannot make an appearance. Id say, if the artist signs a waver saying if they pass that it can be used- then use it. proceeds should go to the family. That way you can keep the artist alive through their work. Which is attempted to still be done now, but seeing and hearing them is definitely better than 'well heres a random old disc/cassette/vinel/ect. Id rather go to a concert for something like that, where i could hear multiple songs, and multiple artists to find new things. At least for older non-current things. As for current- living artists, you tend to discover them via movies, radio, or hearing their 'latest releases' somewhere. I also believe it could be used to have a world tour all at once, like have a live setup in one place, and project to all venues at once. It opens up more possibilities.

I don't think peoples' discomfort stems from the uncanny valley. Personally, when I see holograms of deceased artists performing, I imagine their corpses as puppets with some music exec's hand shoved up their ass. Doesn't matter how good the hologram looks. It's more a moral question than an optical one. I think we feel uncomfortable because of the discrepancy between what we know to be true (that person is dead) and what we are experiencing (this person is here performing. Add in the fact that most people feel uncomfortable knowing that someone they loved and maybe felt a connection with has been turned into a spectacle by the industry for the purpose of making money. Particularly with Tupac. It feels disrespectful to his memory.

I am a bit surprised Vocaloids and Hatsune Miku weren't brought up in this discussion. I guess it's a different thing since Miku and her counterparts are not real in any way and you're fully aware of it. Though, I did go to a Miku concert at a convention and it was really fun. I'm fine with holograms that are obviously fake like that. I share the sentiment, though, that holograms of people that are real and now dead is a bit creepy. It seems disrespectful somehow. Something along the lines of we're gonna keep making money off them, even after they died. It doesn't help that the music industry already has a very scummy reputation in regards to the rights of musicians and their music either. At least, that's how I see it.

I'm not so sure the uncanny valley is the main cause of people's discomfort. I think it has more to do with the fact that they know the artist is dead yet here they are watching a performance that is being capitalized off of. If you notice, it was the festival goers that mentioned being uncomfortable, but not the people who went to, say, the Zappa and Orbison shows necessarily. I think it's because the people who went to those shows had plenty of time to digest beforehand what they were going to see, whereas the festival/award show attendees maybe heard that there was going to be this thing, thought oh wow ok cool, I guess? yet when it happened ended up thinking uh yeah this just doesn't feel right.

Basically, if it's an artist from the distant past, don't do this for those fans that may still be around that could've seen them alive. (The Grateful Dead would be an example. Otherwise this may be better suited for those that past recently and possibly tragically or that never really existed (such as the Gorillaz. I don't like the idea of paying a standard concert cost to see basically a series music videos (regardless of the live vs theatrical style. Coming from someone that barely feels okay to pay full price for a movie ticket once in a while as oppose to waiting to see the movie later from the comfort of my home. This just isn't for me, regardless of the artist(s) that may be involved.

What bugs me about the holograms is who is profiting from these dead stars. Is someone eventually going to have the rights to use anyone who dies ever? Does the family own the rights to their dead loved ones image or the recording company they happened to work for at the time they died? I have family I hate and hate me, and if they could turn a buck on my likeness they would without a second thought and I would HATE for them to profit off my death. Unless someone has expressly written they want their likeness used after their dead, then it shouldn't be allowed. Holographic characters like Hatsune is fine with me. But this bugs me way to much

There are plans to do an Amy Winehouse hologram tour and I am so very upset about it. I am not only a great big fan of her musical work, I have a weird level of connection to her and the soul she poured out in every performance. I dont think youd be able to capture the true essence of a person and recreate it with light, its just not the same. Its such a lovely idea to be able to visit those who have passed, but the emotional and energy exchange isnt truly there. Its like watching a video of them perform a song youve already seen a few hundred times, but bigger. To me I think it would feel empty, you know, put the hollow in hologram.

I think one of the problems with holographic concerts is that we do not know what to expect yet. People do not have a problem to applaud a movie-screening, because it's an appreciation for the work done. I think if holographic shows (which could also be entirely new, unique shows) become more of an expression of art from those that made it and less an attempt to revive the dead, people will see it differently. If you go to a holographic concert hoping that you forget the star ever died, hating on every little detail that is not 100% perfect, you're bound to be disappointed. Nothing the Creators of the Show could do to prevent that.
