Mansa Musa: The Richest Man In History? John: Thanks for informing about an 'African' State' of which I knew nothing. Africa is poor, due to corruption, but also lacks much History, because of the lack of written History, held back by Geography. The main problem here is that Mali didn't rub up against other educated or advanced States. It didn't go to war, nor engage in extensive trade. This has the effect of holding back development. At the same time as Mansa Musa, Great Zimbabwe was prospering, but their paths never crossed, so there was no exchange of ideas. Just the opposite of what was happening all over Europe, where ideas were being increasingly exchanged and actively sought out. Hence when the Muslims withdrew, from Spain, their books, especially the 'lost' classical works were moved North copied and disseminated around the Universities and Monasteries of Europe. It only took Guttenberg to come along and suddenly everyone in Europe had the chance of learning whatever they wished to learn.

Thank you for countering all the racist propaganda up on the internet by so=called experts like Robert Sepehr who continue to promulgate the false impression that there were no great civilizations in Africa. Why doesn't everyone know about Mansa Musa. Why didn't we all learn about him and his great empire back in the third grade? What a great role model, he gave away generously to the poor and built world class centers of learning. Great job. Paradigm changing (guess that's why it's been hidden from public)

Unfortunately he never met Philip IV of France, with all that amount of gold, he could have solve all his problems of debt lmao
Seriously i find African history really interesting. We really underestimate the rich and long history of that old continent.

reply

I mean, you conclude by stating that African history is as rich and diverse as anywhere else's but this is your only video about African History (centered around one man) and it's also one of your shortest. Let's be honest, broooooo.

Whomever ended it with that gold today, was the group that exploited the labor of all these groups. Color was immaterial. Slavery has been one groups business for many millennia, pitted against white for labour.
reply

if you dont mention the 13000 slaves he brought as a present on his pilgrimage(300 years before atlantic slave trade) and then end the vid with the evil euro sob story, you are being completely dishonest
reply

Instead of Hollywood making 12 Years a Slave movies we need more movies being made about our true Black heritage of African Kings and Queens along with the Mali Empire! This history is our real Wakanda!

My income is barely taxable and I am richer than that miserable beggar Mansa Musa, because I can buy (or even enjoy free of charge) luxuries that he could not have even imagined. For example, good dentistry.
reply

When did using numbers for time actually be used by these ancient peoples? Anyone know? Like at what year AD or Bc people start saying at that time ya its 621 or hey no its -425 lol pls someone answer me
reply

They need to make a Netflix series based in The Malian Empire as well as The Ashanti, Zulu, Nubian, Benin, Edo, And other Empires of Sub Saharan Africa
reply

no way he was the richest, that goes to gilgamesh who is said to have owned every original artifact in the known world. which outmaches any currency!
reply

Now we can see the mythical significance of Timbuktu. Then came the decline, and the rounding up of subjugated people for the slave trade.
reply

Just like all other rich rulers, he became rich by treating country's wealth as his own and spending taxes for personal gain
