It was interesting to me that they included the little detail around 1: 44 that Catherine Parr died from childbirth complications -which is accurate! She's usually remembered as the wife in the rhyme that -survived- (-Divorced, Beheaded, Died, Divorced, Beheaded, Survived-. However, even though she did survive Henry VIII and remarried after him ( her 4th husband; she had 2 prior to Henry) she still died from childbirth complications which puts her still in step with Jane Seymour in the rhyme! Catherine of Aragon and Anne of Cleves - the two -divorced- wives - also both died of illness.

I thought the pie was going to taste pretty darn great since the beginning of the recipe, so im glad it turned out good. I really wanna make it and try it myself, cuz it looks good and everything in it all sounds amazing, deff. my kinda flavors and food! 1 of the best videos yet as well as the Viking feast 1, as far as the food goes! Even tho I'm not a supporter of using veal in any way at all! Ive driven past veal farms here in Wisconsin and it is not ok to how they treat those poor, sad babies. not 1 bit, for real it's messed up!

I'd like to see more Native American recipes.
Especially their Bison & wild game stews for all of the members of their tribe that made sure even the most needy where fed.
I'd also like to see 100+ year old recipes for Mincemeat & Fruitcake.
My Mom & I use to make them when I was a kid but we've lost the recipes over all these years.
I'll 69 in September.

Much more recent, but -Lobscouse and Spotted Dog- by A C Grossman and A G Thomas, is a cookbook of the British Navy during the Napoleonic wars. It-s a companion book to the Audrey Maturin series by Patric O-Brian. The books are full of food descriptions from the era, and the cookbook is a wonderful attempt at every food item in the 20 book series, from grog, to elegant truffle pie. It-s a great read in its own right!

The main meal of the day was served about 11 am a day for the vast majority of the population. This was the case until the mid 1600s. And it was so for a very simple reason. Daylight. Most people would have another much smaller meal after the work day that consisted of mainly bread and something to accompany it. Cheese, etc. It didn't become really fashionable to eat in the evening until the time of Queen Victoria.

So not a royal recipe, but you talked about rolled meat things. My family has always made krautstrudle or grout strudel, not sure which is correct. It's basically hamburger sauteed well with onions and spices, cabbage (boiled or sauteed) and dough. (I sometimes use spiced pork sausage. Saute the meat and onions, cook cabbage and fill a roll. Bake them and serve with homemade mushroom soup. delish!

Sohla, we really enjoy your cooking plus history videos. How about making Zongzi? The origin of Zongzi (Sticky Rice Dumpling) in China can be traced back to the Spring and Autumn Period (approximately 771- 476 BC. It was first used in ceremonies to worship ancestors and gods. Since the Jin Dynasty (266 - 420 AD, rice dumpling had become an iconic food for Dragon Boat Festival.

Seems to me the blue herb for the jelly might have made a difference, blue colouring just is really different and probably flavourless. odd that she really didn't try to find a substitute or substitutes combining to act like the old herb. not that the jelly looks that appetizing anyway, but we'll never know.

Speaking of jellies, can you do 1940s/50s potluck stuff from when refrigerators and jello first came out? All those Dr Seuss-looking, ham and eggy situations with cloves and aspic and pickles - creepy savory jello molds with fish and hard boiled eggs- that would be fun to watch

Hate to be that person, but you guys showed what looks to be the Halifax Gibbet being used at 1: 22. Do we know if King Henry VIII used it on his. wives? From what I can tell, they were beheaded by sword. And yes, I am fun at parties. Love Sohla btw, great re-creations!

Henry the 8th one challenged the King of France to a wrestling match, lost and closed down his -Party- because he was a sore loser at the time. Ive been attempting Chicken Cordon Bleu and have used other cheeses from mozzarella to Brie and even Port Wine cheese

There is actually at least one Christmas cookie/baked good from Norway/Scandinavia that uses pre cooked egg yolks, though I believe it is a mixture of raw and cooked. You saying you-d never seen egg yolks used like that reminded me of it!

Speaking of rolled meat dishes, a couple of years ago for my anniversary dinner, I made us beef negimaki. My husband grew up in Japan for a few years (military family) so I wanted to give him some nostalgia.

This pie could be a cousin of mince meat pie made the old way with beef & suet. I'm glad it turned out well with all the work involved. Thanks for another great episode, it's really fun and educational.

No wonder he had Gout. Very high fat diet with alcohol. They say he had a STD that affected his brain in later life Funny I just finished reading a book on him. Blessings
