A Day In The Life Of A Roman Slave - A Day In History

The Roman Empire ran on slaves. Slavery was such a necessary part of its ecosystem that a massive 1 in 5 citizens in the Roman Empire were enslaved. It was so common in fact, that Emperor Nero was once told by his advisor Seneca that a proposal was once made in the senate to distinguish slaves from free men by their dress, but it then became apparent how great would be the impending danger if our slaves should begin to count our number. In essence, if slaves were to realize how large in number they were, then they could easily rise up against their masters. The Roman Empire is one of the greatest civilizations of all time. It gave us poetry, music, art and stories still told today. It produced new sciences, medicines and works of great minds like the ancient Greek philosophers: Socrates, Hippocrates, Plato, Aristotle to mention a few. When we think of Ancient Rome, we think of the decadence and luxury of a civilization living lavishly. What we dont think of is the slavery that made this all possible

From what I understand an average wealthy Roman could have 2-3 to 300 house slaves. What is interesting is how now people are employed for minimal pay and sort function almost in a slave capacity today. Average person working a minimum wage cant afford a house, a lawyer, or an education without significant sacrifice. Once a person has children the challenges multiply. I know so many that can barely afford to live where I have lived for 50 years, because the price of owning or renting a home has become difficult at best. Many migrate to the hotter inland areas to afford housing. Its amazing how everyone needs help, from cooking to gardening to childcare, but it takes now an army of nearly invisible people to make it happen. They become invisible because they exist on the thinnest margins.

The fact is that until the 19th century and the campaigns, and actual wars (including the U. S. Civil War, but also the activities of the British Empire worldwide) slavery had been the main source of labor historically. Singling out the Roman Empire is not exactly putting that in perspective. The Romans did it bigger, but they were no different and far less cruel than say, the Arabs and later Muslims, who were the main slave traders in history (and still are.

slavery has been around since caveman times. there was always some group stronger than another so could attack and take slaves. the africans did it the native americans did it so it's nothing new or exceptional. in usa we are fed the myth that only blacks were enslaved when it's been a thing since time began.

Romans had slaves? That could mean that early Italians had slaves. In fact if you search back through history you'll find that many countries had a period of time when they had slaves. Thankfully this is now in the minority in the present day.

Slavery still exists. after Libya was destroyed, they now have open slave markets on the city centers. Saudi Arabia has a huge number of slaves. Dubai has slaves. the law allows for them. Every country has them but a few still allows them.

The Mystery Religions were an important part of Roman life as well. A slave could save what money they got and buy their way into the Mystery Religion and at some point in their training and initiation become the master of their master.

All good but let's be accurate. for example the first picture is ancient Corinth in the golden era before it was sacked and ultimately raised to the ground from the Romans like they did with Carthage. Beautiful information though: )

It also utterly destroyed ancient cultures. and gave humanity a distorted view of Christianity which has lead humanity into a hopeless spirel of self destruction set against the far more powerful force of nature we now face today.

I wonder how the individual cultures got by before the rise of the republic and the empire. Do we know how slavery was practiced under the Etrusicans, Sammites, Latins. etc? The Greek city states had slaves etc.

Many of the work attributes of these Roman slaves are very much the same or similar to that of modern slaves in the 21st century working for their Capitalist Multinational Masters.

Did you notice the explanation of the lowly labor slaves sounded somewhat similar to prisoners in America? The U. S. is #1 in incarceration rate in the world! Modern slavery?
reply

Acknowledging slavery in ancient Rome, how many other civilizations also utilized slavery? I don't think it's just Rome, but much of the pre-modern history.

The worst thing slaves had to endure was struggling to move carrying the great weight of the huge yellow dots that were stuck onto their bodies.
