How Terrible was Ivan the Terrible? Documentary
video description
Edit: it also means thunderous but in that context it is closer to previously mentioned meanings
2nd edit: you cant say for sure whether his son was killed by Grozny or not, as I could remember, some newly found evidence says its due to illness but not because of Ivan

For those who wonder, Oprichnina is a dowery. Ivan was saying that he was a wife without a dowery, in other words a monarch without his own guards, unlike European monarchs. He used Oprichnina guards to solidify his rule, plus he created the artillery house in Moscow, and in the end the new regular army.

I like your videos, but it is worth mentioning two things. 1 - Ivan was beat and tortured by Boyars as a youth, thus targeting him. 2. Ivan did not beat his son to death, this is a later rumor. Modern evidence shows lethal amounts of quicksilver in his system but no signs of being beaten to death.

There is also one fact. When Muscovy conquered Novgorod. All local nobility was transfered in Moscow and replaced with moscow boyars. So he actually didnt have any reason to be afraid of Novgorodian nobility, who were loyal because they were muscovites, but he still did.

Actually, it is uncertain if Ivan really killed his son. The examination of Ivan jr's remains had shown that he most likely died of mercury poisoning rather than of getting his head hit with a blunt object.

Ivan IV was also drank a ludicrous amount of mercury because it was believed it would make one live forever.
He drank so much mercury that, iirc, the bones of his corpse have visible deposits of the stuff.

Ivan 4 didn't just kill his son. he had just caused his daughter in law to miscarriage after he had hitten her way too hard on the abdomen, causing her husband (Ivan's heir) to get really really angry

This guy would've made Chess very interesting.
He'd sacrifice a queen to safe a pawn.
Only to use said pawn to get back said queen and end up checking the opponent's every jolly move possible.

My history teacher told me that Ghengis Khan or Atilla the Hun (I forget which) wherever he walked the grass never grew. I had this mental image of these footprints all over the Steppes.

Great video! We must always remember to be critical of our sources. Who is writing the history can be just as if not more important than the history that they write.

You misrepresent and sanitize by omission because ivan also tortured the common people in sadistic, perverse ways which is why he was called the terrible.

Interesting that Ivan temporarily 'abdicated' and gave power to a close friend, and then resumed power when it suited him. Sound familiar?

To justify his concern, many Boyars would move to Italy and become grand pasta makers, challenging the Pierogi for popularity.
