When most countries conquer overseas lands they keep them as colonies. Yet in the case of Algeria, France made it a part of France itself in the same way that Paris or Corsica were. So why did France do this and how did a part of France itself manage to become independent?

I find all these comments quite ironic. Yes, citizens in former colonies are French citizens and they enjoy rights extended to French citizens but some people solely talk positively about this situation. These colonies were formed under opressive and exploitative conditions. We must acknowledge the racist ideology that was pushed by the French empire through neo-colonization, massacre's and assasinations of African pm's. For example: Europe and France have the guts to complain about Muslims (in a unfair way as well. As one example I'll take Indonesia (then colonized by the Netherlands- millions of Muslims) and Algeria.
France gathered 400 Muslim scholars, and cut their heads off with machetes; During its occupation of Chad in 1917 AD. When France entered the Algerian city of Laghouat in 1852 A. D, it exterminated two thirds of its population. by burning it with fire, and in one night.
France conducted 17 nuclear tests in Algeria in the period from 1960 to 1966, which resulted in an unspecified number of victims ranging between 27 thousand and 100 thousand. Its effects are still today. (Same as U. S. in pacific and in Vietnam.
When France left Algeria in 1962, it had planted behind more mines than the entire population of Algeria at the time, 11 million mines. France occupied Algeria for a period of 132 years. the French occupied a million Muslims in the first 7 years after their arrival, and a million and a half in the last 7 years before their departure
French historian Jacques Gorky estimated that the total of those murdered by France in Algeria, from its arrival in 1830 until its departure in 1962, were 10 million Muslims.
France has occupied Tunisia for 75 years, Algeria for 132 years, Morocco for 44 years, and Mauritania for 60 years.
When France entered Egypt in its famous campaign, the French soldiers entered the mosques with their horses, and they raped free women in front of their families. They drank alcohol in the mosques, and they turned a number of mosques into stables for their horses.
It is strange that you see some people flaunting the civilization of France and even defending it and forgetting all its black history. Till this day Macron refused to apologize and its only recently that France returned the Algerian skulls of anti-colonial fighters which they kept as a COLLECTION in Paris.
In regard to Indonesia, Edward Vanvugt in Roofstaat explains how Dutch infrastructure was advanced through money from the former colonies and how civilians were treated in Indonesia. I think its hypocritical to look at the current situation of these former colonies without acknowledging how much African, Asian and non-European blood was spilled in order to achieve that.

So you're saying that France invaded Algeria to civilize Algerians? my man you're so wrong, when France invaded Algeria, the illiteracy in France was way higher than Algeria(70% of the French were illiterate, as for Algeria, the illiteracy did not exceed 55%) in 1962 when Algeria took it's independence, the Illiteracy in Algeria was 80%, and few years before the invasion, Algeria saved France from famine by lending them wheat, and when Algeria asked for their money, the French refused to pay, and this when the disagreement happened between the Dey of Algeria and the French council, and because in 1827 Algeria(ottoman empire)lost most of its fleet in the Battle of Navarino, The Ottoman dey made a deal with the French, they allowed him to take all the gold and money from the treasury in exchange of the surrender of Algiers, so Algiers never fought back because the Ottomans betrayal, and before 1830, the Sahara wasn't part of Algeria, Only the northern cities belonged to Algeria.
Fun fact, the Iron used to build the Eiffel Tower is from Algeria.

France stole the money from Algeria, millions and millions. Because France was going through a deadly crisis of famine, it had to ask for help from Algeria. Of course, Algeria passed France of its obligation to send very many tons of wheat on condition of payment after years. But France evaded payment, so the dey of Algiers summoned the French ambassador, and after a heated argument the dey struck the ambassador with his fan. France found an opportunity to occupy Algeria with the fan accident, but the truth is that she took advantage of the opportunity because the Algerian fleet was destroyed in the battle of Navarine. If the Algerian fleet had not been destroyed, France would have suffered the blows of the Dey to the ambassador and to the king too. And as every beginning has an end, the Algerians were able to expel France after a fierce war which ended with the independence of Algeria.

The French left from the door and came back from the window, at the time the war was going on in Algeria, the French had already prepared two armies in Morocco and Tunisia comprised of Algerian traitors who belong to France ready to invade Algeria from the east and west once the French leave, and that is exactly what happened in 1962, the two illegitimate armies invaded Algeria, stole the victory from the true fighters, killed most of them and the rest run away for their lives. This puppet army led by Boumedien established a military dictatorship which still rule the country to this day on behalf of France. Final result, the so called Algerian war of liberation failed and France still rule Algeria using the Algerian military mafia which destroyed the country in every way possible.

Here is a controversial question:
Considering how many Algerians have moved to France in the decades after independence, was independence really a good thing for Algerians or not?
If the Algerians of today could go back and vote whether to to be independent or stay part of France, with full citizenship rights, of course, which would they choose?
Everyone wants to get rid of the tyrant overlords and celebrate independence. But then they have to actually govern themselves, and that can get a bit tricky.
An important point is that, considering the higher birth rate of Algerians compared to European French, a combined France-Algeria would eventually have become Algeria-France. Now wouldnt that have been interesting?
Any Algerians here who can comment on this?

reply

Not really. France invaded Algeria because of the Barbary pirates. These muslims pirates operating out of Algeria would raid Italy, France and Spain and literally steal people, and not just a few, but hundreds of thousands. They also raided towns and set them on fire. When Spain, France and Italy got fed up, France was tasked with putting down this threat, which they did, thus starting the conquest and occupation of Algeria.
P. S. I have no idea where the moderator got his ideas from but he's totally wrong. He repeated talking points usually associated with revanchist muslims, By the way, I'm a historian who has actually studied this matter for many years.

Good vid n shi7, but story is far more deeper and has so much important details that are not mentioned, such as algerians volunteering for france army because france promised leaving algeria if they secured them their country from nazis, they fought germany in ww2 and win which shocked both parties france and germany and guess what! They did lie indeed and 08/05 carnages happened shortly after( i highly recommend looking for this one, there is also the trying to take the desert and give up their precious north due to discovery of oil. ect

You forgot to say that historically, Algeria lost a lot but ended up winning this war, which really started from1830 to 1962( because french colonialism entered Algeria in the 18s, in april 1827), if we go deeply in history, we know that algeria lost a million and a half of chuhadas(died for freedom) but in reallity it lost more than 5millions of people, this country has a big rich history!
reply

It's a shame when you see how Algerian people are treated in France nowadays. They are more french than half the people in France. They fought for France even tho they had nothing to win in that war. After all those sacrifices, people still want to make their lives miserable because some of them want to wear a headscarf, and so many other stuff.

great video, my grandmother was taken as an indentured servant at the age of 6 by a wealthy french family. they demolished her village and essentially kicked everyone out so they could build a winery on top of it. no one could ever fathom what the french put our people through during their occupation of our ancestral land.

Func fact: The Algerian muslims considered the jewish privilege as collaboration with French and thus betrayal and treason. After kicking out the French, they gave the entire jewish population an ultimatum. Leave Algeria for good or face Death. The jews decided to leave. And now till this day Algeria has 0 jews.
reply

I enjoy all of History Matters videos, but this one leaves out the important fact that Muslims in Algiera were involved in piracy and raiding the European coast, enslaving millions of Christians over centuries. France's occupation of Algeria put an end to that and we should all be grateful.
reply

Great video! I'm Algerian and I always asked myself this question. just a note, you should have mentioned the massacres of may 8th 1945 (a major reason of the war of independance) and in 1947 only a small part of Algerians were given rights with strict conditions, anyways great video.
reply

Spanish overseas territories were part of Spain proper, the minorities in those places were given full rights, i really wonder when anglo saxons will stop believing the black legend of the spanish and portuguese colonies being awful when they were in reality, the best ones.
reply

Not to forget that Charles De Gaulle used the Algerian revolution as an ocasion to stage a military coup in France to redact his own constitution and creating the fifth republic (extended powers to the president and limited role of parliament)
reply

Wierd how it doesn't mention any of the genocide and massacres the French conducted against the Muslim people of Algiers. It also conveniently explains away the Jewish alliance with France as a way to tax Jews as if they were the victims in this.
reply

France created Algeria as it is known today, before France there was no such a country called Algeria, there was just the city port of Algiers which was dominated by ottoman/Turkish pirates living of the piracy and looting of European ships
reply

It was actually a french military victory, the only reason why Algeria became independent was that this war couldn't be justified on the international scene anymore, especially dur to the hard way it was fought (see french doctrine)
reply

One of the darkest page of French history that unfortunately still does not teach in the right way at historty lessons: ) French soldiers killed more then 10 million people during these 132 years of occupation.
reply

france is still economically colonising algeria to this very day, they litteraly keep kicking out italian products from coming in to algeria while providing the worst french products to the market instead
