Why is Luxembourg a country? - History of Luxembourg in 11 Minutes Very good video. But perhaps making clear what the the holy roman empire was, could help identify what Luxembourg is. Basically envision a proto-europe. Where you have 50+ little and bigger states/countries. Some as big as just a city (city states) and other huge (like Austria. Each region with their own history. Forming little melting pots of cultures that shifted constantly due to those counties (sub divisions in the country) being swapped due to constant internal wars inside the holy roman empire. With the unification into a real German empire, one language was pushed. But Luxembourg, due to its special circumstances, kept its local developed dialect. Again dialects are something that is very very common in the region. In Belgium for example, you have hundreds of dialects, each with their own grammar, unique words and pronunciation. This is not taught at schools, so it is slowly disappearing. But Luxembourg managed to keep hold of its unique local developed melting-pot culture.\r\n

I wish Luxembourg would never happened. I live there 14 years, married to one of them. There is a saying about this region - it happened overnight in 1974 when a potato farmer drunk, fell off his tractor and into an Armani super expensive suit. it was in 1974 when one politician came up with an idea to turn this potato and onion agro place known as southern provincial Germany into a second rate banking, processing blood money/investments that Switzerland banned. It is a world champion of alcoholism, suicides and divorces, for it has no identity, no spirituality but money in the banks.

What a strange map is used: it looks like the -Afsluitdijk- in the Netherlands is not a dike but a piece of land. Zeeland in the Netherlands is also wrongly drawn, like everything else. Then: how can you not mention that upon the death of King William III of Orange-Nassau of the Netherlands, not having a male heir, Luxembourg became an a Grand-Duchy under the Von Nassau-Weilburg? You go from the King of the Netherlands to mentioning -the Duchess- without explaining what happened and why all of a sudden there is a Duchess. It's all very inaccurate.

Bad video! It does not answer the question in any way. But it is simple: in 1890 de Dutch king Willem III, who was the Grand Duke of Luxemburg, died and was succeeded by his minor daughter Wilhelmina. The Luxemburg law (Salic law) at the time did not allow a female succession of the Grand Duchy. So the next make successor in line was a distant German relative of Wilhelmina who became the next Grand Duke. That is how Luxemburg became a own country!
There is a grand statue of Willem III on his horse on a main square in Luxemburg city.

one sad fact is, we are losing our luxemburgian language, no matter where you go, you will hear that french is spoken much more than luxemburgish. even english is dominant in luxemburg. i, as a portuguese born in Wiltz and raised with the language, think it is pretty sad. in other countries you-ll have to learn their language, here in luxemburg you need more french. which makes me realize that luxemburg is not a completely independent country yet. it still is under control by french/belgian people.

The PRESENT set-up of Modern Europe is a by-product of centuries of ANIMOSITY between different tribes of Europe, we have to remember Europe is PLAGUE by wars and civil wars during the last 3 centuries, only in the latter half of the 20th Century, Europe come to its senses that they cannot go to war forever, somewhere along the way, they have to find a way to PEACEFULLY coexist with each other, and that was is the European Community then later evolved into the European Union.

Did you skip over the breakup of the personal union with Netherland? When King Willem III died, and his daughter inherited the throne of Netherland, Luxembourg's constitution didn't allow a female monarch, which lead to the breakup.
Also, your map looks really weird. Why does it display the Markermeer as water, but the IJsselmeer as land? (Not to mention that that whole setup didn't even exist yet before the 20th century; it would be better to use a more historical map)

Before rhe creatioin of the Euro, Luxembourg and Belgium formed an economic/monetary union called the BLEU. The Luxembourg Franc had exactly the same value as the belgian Franc and both currency's were used in both countries. Histoirically the belgian province of Luxemburg was part of the grand Duchy, but the entire country was part of the -Burgunder Kreitz- created by Charles V.

Ok the real reason is this: Luxembourg was well into being integrated into Germany in the 19th century (speaking a German dialect, being part of the German confederation and having a federal German fortress, but the problem was that it was also part of the Dutch kingdom. Because it was ruled by someone who was decidedly not German, Luxembourg didnt join in the German unification.

fun fact: the schengen treaty that gives most of the EU the right to travel without border checks in between Schengen zone member countries, was named after the luxembourgish town of Schengen, sitting right at the three border point of france luxembourg and germany along the moselle river.

The accession of Queen Wilhelmina to the throne of the Netherlands in 1890 ended the personal union between that country and Luxembourg, because the latter was under Salic law which barred women from the throne. That-s when the two countries finally went their separate ways.

I lived and work in Luxembourg, I can tell you is a country playing with money, no profissionalism at all, aeroport, stores, clinics. Don't understand how this is a a country, not many options of jobs, I thing this country in 30 years will crash a lot

Little known fact: Luxembourg is a country with the highest consumption of red meat.
Just a weird statistic that I picked up many years ago and I have never forgotten, for whatever reason.

These AI generated voices are getting better and better, just a few little quirks. Like the pronunciation of Louis. AI does realize the S is silent. Loui.

We shouldn't say C. E. When referring to the year. The Gregorian calendar is based on the birth of Christ. A. D. or Year of Our Lord is the proper nomenclature.

Luxembourg is a very big world wide banking center and the rich hold a lot of assets in this country to avoid taxes. This is why it stays a country.

I wouldn't recommend anyone to live in Luxembourg. No life, no culture. Everything is so expensive and people are so rude. Can't wait to leave this country

Child! Who taught you how to pronounce some of those names? You don't need to even speak French to be able to pronounce Louis correctly.
