10 Psychological Defense Mechanisms

We often turn to our coping mechanisms when dealing with stressful situations. Here are 10 psychological defense mechanisms that people rely on LPlayz: Dissociation is my bread and butter at this point. I didn't have any friends or anyone to really talk with for quite a large portion of my life (circa 4 years. In that time, I started to gravitate more and more towards fictional characters, idolising them and making up scenarios in my head where I could talk to them. Which ones depends on what fandom I am in at the time. I still do this even now that I do have friends and I keep wishing some magical power will take me away from this world so I can physically be with the characters I love. Writing about it makes it feel less real so I don't even practice writing, a hobby I love, to deal with these feelings.
I feel lazy, like I'm making up excuses for why I don't work or why I'm broken. I feel shitty all the time and I don't know how to stop in any other way than to dive back into my fantasy world and talk to the people there. And they don't even know more than I do because they're in my head! And the worst thing is. I don't want to stop. I fear it will make my life boring and that the things I enjoy will become worthless to me and the characters I love won't be alive to me anymore.

I personally have had a hard time finding intimate realtionships. Now I cant even develop any kind of friendship anymore. The more this developped the more I would work. Now today I sit at my desk studying for 8-12 hrs every single day. Like yes every day. I even moved away from my family. I thought that could be a good idea as a kind of restart but it led to even further isolation. Idk I mean I love learning and I enjoy it a lot, my grades are fabulous and I gather more and more knowledge which is some real reward to me. But on the other side I know deep down inside that I am only doing this because I cant have any social life and therefore I try to replace that feeling with this one. Whenever ppl ask me how I am doing that amount of studying I actually tell them the truth. I say that I enjoy it but also have no social life and therefore study all day long because Id have nothing else to do. And also I tell them that I am literally addicted to it. But idk they think its a funny joke. Well. At least I got all As, right?

I definitely use dissociation. I have a great imagination, and when I feel awful, I go to sleep. I lucid dream of a world where I'm happy with my closest friends or partner. Didn't even realize it was a defence mechanism. I can also do it while awake: Imagining a pleasant situation in my mind or dream of releasing all the pain on someone else.

Right off the bat you can tell not to trust anything this person says. People don't 'choose' to use a certain strategy. They use whatever strategy developed over time that produced the greatest benefit with the least amount of discomfort. Anyone who thinks kids 'choose' to be repressed has a screw loose.

I laugh as a defense mechanism. I learned that as a child in a physically abusive family that laughing, though would trigger my abuser to be more violent, made it hurt less. Through a kind of out of body/consciousness way. Don't worry about me I have had years of therapy. I'm just reflecting

II have a question. For instance, someone received a low grade on a test and then later stated that it was ok since someone might have received lower rates than them or worse received a failing grade, can that be an example of rationalization? Answers will be much appreciated. Thank you

Happy Tuesday from Psych2Go! We noticed that a lot of our lives revolves around our subconscious mind, so we wanted to share with you guys 10 potential defense mechanisms that could be operating under the radar. Please share this video with someone who may benefit from this video! :)

When I get into a fight or someone does something really bad to me, minutes later I will be trying to explain what happened to someone else and I will not remember details and if it's really bad I won't even remember what exactly happened just that something happened
reply

Dissociation isnt just living in your own world, its scary, terrifying even, especially when it happens so suddenly. Its useful, indeed, it protects us from traumatic experiences and stress but if it doesnt pass quickly, it becomes maladaptive and its an issue.
reply

I suppress the bad memories. I don't think about a bad relationship that I was in 28 years ago. I discovered that I can draw sometimes so I do that when the mood hits me. I still spend time with family members when I can.
reply

Do we need to defend ourselves necessarily? Does it indicate that we are not in an authentic and healthy relationship with ourselves and others where we can truly feel our feelings without having to defend?
reply

Can you talk more about age regression. I have a lot of people who are trying to use it for negative reasons in a forum I'm in. Also I like to be more aware of the users that I moderate in this forum.
reply

I had to roll back through this video a few times to see which one was me but I can say that 8 is definitely me all the way and their is term related to that called Maladaptive daydreaming
reply

As a child and teenager, I had all of these defense mechanisms. I was very dissociative and I used to play things on a loop, like smoking cigarettes. Why? Because I was dealing with resentment.
reply

Can you please do a deeper dive into regression. I would love to show those around me why I act in a child like behaviour. if you can please I'd be very grateful. Thank you
reply

I would imagine there are many more, but Dissociation seems to be my defense mechanism, when I inevitably fail I resort to video games.
reply

What is it called when I try to forget those unpleasant memories, I don't really know how to explain but it's something like that
reply

Whew. I had to write fast to take notes for that one! I would say I use intellectualization and compensation as defenses.
reply

What about Introjection, I feels like I did a lot of Introjection and Dissociation when cornered by problems
reply

Came here after watching the JCS X-mas with Cliff video and wanting to learn more about ego defense mechanisms
reply

Im sure the content is good however, the music is way too loud to be able to concentrate on the information
