How much sleep did you get last night? Did you have a lack of sleep? It might be tempting to sacrifice some sleep so that you can do more homework, watch more Netflix or stay up with a friend, but did you know that not enough sleep can lead to some serious sleep deprivation effects?

I don't believe a word of it and certainly ignore what science says about how much sleep people need, I am living proof they are wrong in my case anyway. For many years I have not had anything near what science says is a good sleep and Iv never been more alert and full of energy, for about 7 years I was only resting 2 hrs every 24hr and at 52yo I did my own personal best time for olympic triathlon on zero sleep the night before running the 10km leg in 45min. Just to prove my point after a short search among the comments here I did not find anyone else who picked up on the fact that the video voice over is saying ''number 1'' when it is clear there is a number 2 on the video screen just before the speaker asks ''are you paying full attention'' at 26sec mark. wakey wakey

When I was 18 I had three jobs for two months, one 7 days a week, one 6 and one 5. So I could only sleep on Saturdays and Sundays when my girlfriend wasn't overly happy that I fell asleep on top of her. Bought my first car as a result and slept for more than a few days straight after that.
Since then I have noticed that doing work like construction (high physical, lower mental) lets me sleep only four hours, but if I do software development (no physical, more mental) I do best if I sleep ten to twelve hours, during which time I dream about what I am working on and when I get up it just flows out of my fingertips without me being very consciously aware of all the details.

On the contrary the brain is the good guy. Not being able to function, do math calculations, coordinate your hands. it s not a system failure, its the brain intervening.
But it is done because the body needs it, it part of the deal, the package. Big mammals have this much more, rodents are very active and don t sleep so much for example. Its a metabolsim slash efficiency thing. Totally not-efficient mammals do relatively well with lack of sleep, animals who do the efficiency thing aren t. A black bear can in fact die, when you hinder it in his hybernate sleep months.

I find it somewhat confusing since normally, i have around 4-5 hours of sleep daily because i just cant sleep at 10pm and i wake up at 6am consistently. Although tired, i can still function normally and do stuff like other people. But if i were to sleep for 7 hours, i find that i get even more tired, and my mood felt a bit off than usual. Not sure if its just me but i wanna say it here if someone else's have the same experience

I sleep around 3 am and wake up around 8 am. In the afternoon I sleep for 1 hour. That's how I get my 6 hours of sleep. But is it healthy? O have some of the symptoms described in the video and adding to that I have problems like body ache, feeling tired and restless for no reason and also lack of attention in my studies (this is the worst as I stay awake at night just to do that. Is it because of my sleeping schedule?

Im watching this at 5: 00AM but usually if I go to now I would wake up around 1: 00PM or more so I usually get 8 or more hours of sleep so I should be fine I mean for me its summer vacation so I dont have to do anything I usually go to sleep early when I have to do something but yeah I need to know if there is something wrong with this.

its extremely painful for me to fall asleep cause of my birth control giving me severe cramps and literally i am taking my prescribed medicine every 4 hours even after being misdiagnosed cause my doctor didnt do the correct tests so at this point idk what else to do and i really dont think i can handle this pain anymore.
reply

It was ironic how when I watched this it was at 2 am and I have been averaging 3-5 hours of sleep every night for the past 3 months. Even with medication to help sleep I still averaged 5 hours of sleep every day.
Also it is funny how almost every video you make I can relate to.

Even though I myself am sleep deprived, I find a sick irony in the fact that an army institute of research did a study on sense of humor, showed participants (presumably military) simple jokes, and that their understanding of the jokes was far below a average.

. So, you're telling me that all the problems I'm struggling with right now can be fixed by getting more sleep?
Damn, I wish I was able to get a good amount of rest so I can catch up on sleep instead of waking up every weekday at 6 am for school

reply

For me I am in school and for a week I think, I was not getting enough sleep cause of school. My whole body was literally arching, I was tired, AND HAD A SLIGHT FEVER so I had to sleep 1 whole day and one night continuously now I am back to normal

Its also just a big pain, I tried getting 5 hours of sleep for a week. I didnt see much decline in reaction time or memory but it just hurt, idk how to explain it but it like mental hurt. Idk it just felt weird
reply

Hm, well without sleep I actually do forget stuff but my motor functions work fine and the only thing that disperses was my emotions leaving me in a neutral emotional state. Is that a bad thing?
reply

According to my FitBit watch, I slept for an average of 6 hours and 10 minutes per night during 2022.
So far in 2023 that has gone down to 5 hours and 46 minutes. And, those numbers look accurate.

When your school doesn't care about students in the final year and make you stay in school from 5: 20am to 9pm. Did I mention we are in middle school and most of us are 12 or 14. _.

I to relate all the symptoms mentioned in the video and lack of sleep also effected my health, immunity power decreased. Iam suffering with insomnia from 3 years.
reply

hmm this seems like it doesnt involve the time after staying awake where you kinda forget what being sleepy is and kinda work somewhat similarly to being rested.
reply

Sounds like ADHD to me (which I have and some of the things that happens when you lack sleep also go with adhd which I think is questionable at best )
reply

From age 8-12 I really couldn't sleep at all and none of this happened I couldn't even do a sleep study because of the fact that I couldn't sleep.

currently pulling an all nighter putting together a presentation for tomorrow about the affects of sleep deprivation on the brain
heheheh.

reply

Thank you for making this video, I've been really sleep deprived lately so I think this'll help motivate me to actually sleep when I'm supposed to.
