Why Iran's Geography Sucks

Why Iran's Geography Sucks

Why Iran's Geography Sucks I-m 64 and originally from Iran but spent most of my life in the states- close to 50 years of it. I started traveling to Iran, learning about it, and its culture after my retirement a few years ago. I couldn-t disagree more with the findings and the title of this video. Iran-s unique geography is its greatest strength imho. There are major roads throughout its numerous mountain ranges to satisfy their commercial or military requirements while making the mainland easily defendable. I-ve traveled and spoken to people of various tribes in the south (even some Arabic speaking ones) as well as the Turks in the north and just about everything in between. They all patriotically associate themselves with Iran unlike what this video implies. That is in spite of people-s general dissatisfaction with the current government.
Strait of Hurmuz is also a huge bargaining chip and deterrent for Iran-s potential enemies since it is totally controlled by Iran not to mention more than 200 hundred miles of additional southern shores outside of it. Iran might seek influence to its west (and east btw. as anyone would) but it has never tried to expand its borders (as this video suggests) judging by its history unless you go back 2000 years or more.
Makes me wonder what this guy was smoking when he came up with all his conclusions!

The theory works well, I always thought the same by looking at the Iran's orography. But the practice suggests the exact contrary: persian empires, and more generally all the empires centered in the iranian plateau, extended all the way through Indus and Hindu Kush to the east, including large swaths of modern-day Pakistan and Afghanistan; and to the whole Mesopotamia and southern Caucasus to the west, occasionally including parts of Anatolia and Levant. This suggests that the iranian plateau, enclosed by Zagros and Elburz, is a really optimal place from which control a vast empire which stretches from far west to far east. So, why is this the case? This video only cites a possible reason to expand towards Mesopotamia and Egypt, leaving out all the others ways towards Anatolia, Caucasus, Indus and Hindu Kush.

As an Iranian I just want to point out that the ethnicities living in Iran have been together for thousands of years so the argument of a -harsh- regime needed to keep the -cultures- united doesn't make any sense simply because the culture literally comes from all the ethnicities living together not one ethnicity ruling others. The country was simply founded by multiple -ethnicities- living together and that's what makes the country unique. You may also know about the recent protests which are leading to a revolution in these months, one of the most heard chants is -WE FIGHT, WE DIE. WE GET IRAN BACK- all across the country. I think it speaks for itself how almost all the people actually really like living together instead of separating from each other.

Why does everyone think that Iran's ethnic groups want to rise against Iran? Saddam thought the same thing when he attacked, but the reality is something else. Culturally, Iran has made all people consider themselves Iranians. In general, in Iran, Persian, Arab, Kurdish and Azeri and the rest only refer to the language and place of life. Everyone first considers themselves Iranian and then mentions the language and place of life. All previous empires are considered Iranian and they love it. It is enough to see Iran closely. In terms of nationality, it has a lot of integrity. Although it has its own problems, including the economy!

-I guess whether the geography of a country -sucks- depends on perspective and viewpoint. From my perspective and viewpoint, EGYPT's geography sucks: All of the country with the exception of a narrow strip of land along the Nile river is uninhabitable and 95% of the 104 million population of Egypt lives on this limited land! That is sucky geography. -

eight years not six years as mentioned by this video: -
The Iran-Iraq War was an armed conflict between Iran and Iraq that lasted from September 1980 to August 1988. It began with the Iraqi invasion of Iran and lasted for almost eight years, until the acceptance of United Nations Security Council Resolution 598 by both sides.

What do you think about taking a look at the roads of Iran?
None of those roads and videos you showed from Iran were from Iran.
You just showed some photos with open view of cities and mountains.
It is better to do more research before making your video and provide more evidences to show.

That's why we are the oldest country and nation_state in the history. this badass geography has always saved us from enemies so Iranian dynasties from Elamid Imperial up to Pahlavi Imperial could preserve the Iranian language, cultures and traditions.
reply

Iran's geography is actually good, The glorious mountains serve as protection to the country, and we have flat plains and lush forests for farming. Iran also has infrastructure and road systems that build up to the mountains that connect the country.
reply

as Iranian I must Say, Zagros mountains are not such a great Barrier as you show! but Alborz and Damavand are Greate! Arabs, Turks, Mongols, and Macedonian none of them could conquer what was above Alborz mountain

As an iranian I'm proud of my country but nowadays we are facing some internal problems and unfortunately regional ones as well, it's just like the world has planned to screw middle east and centeral asia
reply

As a Quebecois who has visited Iran, I'd have to say the roads and infrastructure in some abandoned villages in Iran is of far better quality than many major roads in Quebec, Ontario and BC!
reply

If you look at it from the colonizers point of view, yes it sucks because they can't invade! But for Iranians who love nature, our geography is part of our diverse identity
reply

Why do you try to show ira very dark? It has its flaws but ine of the best things about this country is that it's a four-seasoned country
Dont just see one side

reply

Iran is fascinating. They have one of the driest deserts I-ve seen a few hours away from one of the most lush and green hillsides rivaling that of Ireland.

An ancient nation with a fantastic cultural heritage and fantastic diversity in terms of both ethnicity and climate. A big big love for Iran

4: 36 but Persia/Iran was able to conquer Afghanistan multiple times. Same with parts of Pakistan (though usually west of the Indus)

Iran is like a crossroads from west to east and from north to south, this is the reason for the west's enmity with Iran

What else a country in the world could have?

Iran is mostly having a desert as its landform. However, the country has history dating thousands of years.

reply

Sucks? It's actually one of the best in wars. It can easily prevent attacks because of the mountains.
