10 games that killed the whole franchise
video description
3 - Saints Row - It was quite a fall from grace. They were the underdog competitor to GTA. GTA started moving to a more pseudo-realistic style of gameplay and SR was leaning into the over the top. Personally I think the game was best with SR2, though it wasn't all bad with 3 or anything. It really started losing its lustre when they introduced actual superpowers and mythical stuff with demons and everything. Saints Row reboot was pretty lifeless and mediocre unfortunately, though it was still OK at least to me.

Frranchises for which I still have hope but might end up on this type of video sooner or later:
- Might and Magic: I love this franchise, but it's not looking good AT ALL. Maybe Age of Wonders 4 will show Ubisoft that there is still money to be made with the franchise, but unlikely.
- Prince of Persia: the only reason it wouldn't be on lists like this is that it didn't really end on a terrible note. Just killed by Assassin's Creed.
- Darksiders: at this point I have given up following what might happen with this one. I'll happily get new games, but I won't get my hopes up.
- Portal: Valve being Valve, I guess.
Franchises that could have made it in this list:
- King's Quest: obviously, the point&click genre is mostly dead anyway, but this one died early because of KQ8 going in such a wild direction.
- Bioshock: I actually quite liked Infinite, but there's no denying that it's divisive at best, and there's no Bioshock in sight.

I loved Medal of Honor (2010) and Warfighter. Warfighter was actually co-written by Tier 1 operators based on their experiences, and the gameplay in multiplayer was highly underrated; it could have been better of course, but it's version of hardcore was insane. If EA gave it a little more time, it could have been something really special. As a veteran, I was able to get a special version of the game with in-game extras, which I thought was a really nice touch. Fun fact: The guys who founded Infinity Ward worked on Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, left EA to make Call of Duty, got fired by Activision and they created Respawn, and then worked on another Medal of Honor entry. Kind of cool that they went full circle.

Dead Rising is my namesake. I became Rez Rising in 2007. It broke my heart how it went downhill. THEY TOOK OUT THE CLOCK AND MADE MORE SAVE POINTS!
BAD!
The constant pressure to be near perfect is what made the game great! The 3 convict boss fight music is STILL in my head (partially bc they had a sample from a Rush song in it) bc I had to do it about 100 times to get it right. Hint: Use the trees.
I 100% the achievements in 2 and 3, even the psycho long ones like Genecide and that ridiculous one in 3 that had about 40 sub acheives.
Wish they'd get back to what made it fun. Hint: NOT dressing Frank up like a Barbie Doll.

Driver SF was phenomenal, I still hope to see a new Driver game someday. It will likely never happen.
It's got an interesting story, Tanners ability is very unique (basically a game in 2nd person, which is ultra rare to see, the car selection is quite big (not as big as a racing game such as Forza Horizon 5 or Gran Turismo but still plenty of slow and fast cars) and the most fun you could have with the game came from the physics. The physics are fantastic, especially for a game that is as old as Driver SF. Somehow, it can compete with BeamNG and Wreckfest. Sadly, Ubisoft pulled it from the store some years ago.

Hmmmm. you don't seem to hit towards RPGs much, but you completely ignored Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter. Sure, Capcom did a BoF mobile game after it, that only lasted for about a year and was hated more, but even in the RPG communities I sometimes lurk around the vast majority of the BoF fanbase detests Dragon Quarter, as do most who aren't BoF fans. Mind you, it IS popular with the Rogue-lite crowd, and with how popular such games have become today it may do well if it got a rerelease or remaster, but amongst the target audience it still doesn't hit well today.

Ultima 9. For a long time the Ultima series was a beloved and influential series of RPGs. But something went wrong when it came time to wrap up the Guardian Trilogy. Technical issues were plenty, but could be fixed and forgiven with patches. What really killed it was the horrible writing. The plot was full of holes. Plot threads from previous games were dropped or retconned into oblivion. The writing insulted players' intelligence. And the 'final twist' ruined the whole point of being the Avatar.

Edit: if you make a part 2 and include dragon quarter, I'll totes go back and like this video
--
Sadly, had to leave a dislike. This is only really contemporary games. You missed out on prime examples, like with Breath of Fire. It had game releases every 2-3 years between BoF 1-4, then the abortion of Dragon Quarter slops out in 2004, then nothing.
And your support of Asses of Shadow. Poor Castlevania didn't deserve that utter atrocity.

I was a huge fan of arcade Marvel vs Capcom. If they resurrect it, I hope they take a page out of MK10-11 and add a great story mode where you switch out characters and such. Alongside the individual endings for the series. One thing I always hated about King of Fighters is you wouldn't get an actual ending if you didn't use the pre set trios or the set combination trios. And I think MvC 3 had this generic awful ending with a ship that sucked.

Going franchise that I've pretty angry and I will never see another sequel to or at least a branch off of is Warhammer 40, 000 dawn of war. Dawn of war 3 destroyed the entire franchise and the worst part like every other game companies think not everyone is ready for another dawn of war or they don't want it, they will never see that it was actually cuz the game was trying way too hard to be like starcraft 2.

Saints row failed due to the stubbornness of the geniuses of volition, everyone was warned several times, but they preferred not to listen to the fans, the geniuses of volition thought they knew more than the fans, doubled the bet. and lost badly. . And the worst thing is that I know they won't learn from this, so I hope they don't have a job there at volition anymore.

do you get paid to mention the driver series at least once a month hahaha. im here to tell you they're terrible games and the only reason you like them is nostalgia. they paved a path for open world 3d driving games. but paving a path doesnt make something good. usually the first iterations of a new idea are terrible and the driver games were no exception sadly.

I m excited af for the dead rising reboot/remakes. I hope Capcom gives us a free roam mode for DR1 where we re not timed and we can progress through the story and save survivors at our own pace. I do love the og DR with the timed stress but I would definitely love to just mess around like you can in 2+3. I ve never played 4 and have no plans to.

yeah saints row 2022, what the hell were they thinking. i liked all the previous ones to different degrees but there isnt anything i liked about the recent one. Actually minus the first game also, i didn't like a few of the missions. there were a couple timed ones which were buggy as hell and took me a million tries to finish.

Splinter Cell kinda got killed by 2 games. Conviction, for deviating from the formula too much and pissing off fans even though it was fun, and then Blacklist went back to roots a bit with the action option. Still pretty fun game but no Michael Ironside for Sam Fisher really ruined it for a lot of people I imagine.
