Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - Before You Buy Sam: Jake, I liked BoTW, but that effectively makes this game a poor investment, it's mostly just that game. again. Like even the new stuff. It still has 4 divine beast-style dungeons, a story told mostly in flashbacks, you go get Zelda.
I'm really disappointed that after 6 years they just made BoTW again with some skyward sword on the side.
I LOVE Ganondorf, always amazing to see! And he's voiced by one of my all-time faves, Mr. Matt Mercer. but that's really about all that's new here.
Like the Tenent inversion ability and stranger things ascend, but fusion and ultrahand. yeek! Sounds like you're gonna be concerned with the how as opposed to enjoying the trip from points a to b. Tedious and feels like a chore.
I've said this before, the team is creatively bankrupt, sounds like they didn't know what to do here. so they ended up sticking to what worked before and what kids on YT seem to like.
can't really give them any props for this. Btw, I couldn't care less about framerate and graphics, but to play a game that looks like BoTW in 2023, when BoTW looked dated for its time, means they had to not just excel at other aspects but do the unimaginable. and no surprise, they didn't.
I'm sounding like my cousin when TFA came out loooooooool.

I was never a huge Zelda fan to begin with, but I played breath of the wild just because I had a switch and I figured I had to see what all the fuss was about
I liked it well enough, I think I got about 20 hours or so into it. But I got tired of all the puzzle shrines and I really got tired of the weapon durability system
So while I still got a fair amount of enjoyment out of it, 20 hours is solid, clearly I did not play it for as long as it was intended to be played and it lost my interest rather quick in comparison to other open world games
I wanted to hear that some of the things I wasn't a fan of were changed for this sequel but it does look like it is just more built on top of what was already there
Which I also understand, they're not trying to cater this game just to me, however it does mean that I will likely not check it out anytime soon either
Glad to hear people who did like the first one however are pleased with this one

I've had a copy of BotW for a while, but have only picked it up in the last month or so in anticipation for TotK.
At first, I wasn't a fan, but then I was sucked in once the game mechanics and combat clicked. Now, I've hit a massive wall and am just not having any fun anymore.
I'm scouring Hyrule for more dungeons to increase my heart capacity, but after spending hours traveling through desolate and empty wastelands, all I'm finding is the occasional Korok pile of poo. Seems like a slap on the face, actually.
My issue with BotW is momentum.
Once you lose it, it's really, really hard to get it back at the end game.

The performance issues are rough. You did not really touch on that enough. Some people really need to know just how poor this game runs. If you skip to 4: 39 in this video, notice that massive FPS drop. Yea, you re gonna be seeing that A LOT. Like every time you go into ultra hand mode. It s truly horrendous and I can t believe people are just looking past it and ignoring it, pretending it s not a huge glaring issue. The hey it s a switch, what are ya gonna do? mindset is pretty sad. Even Nintendo needs to be held accountable when a game runs like absolute ass.

Look despite it dipping to literally like 15 FPS at times I'm still playing it. It's still really good and I honestly think nintendo does everything but play the games themselves because art design game mechanics f map everything about the game is. Amazing and then it's 30 FPS I don't understand do you play the game nintendo? Do you have a bunch of executives who just don't open the game console do they not realize that it's dipping to 15 FPS is literally insane in 2023. Or do you just not touch your games I don't understand? Really really good though

A refreshing review in all honesty. I enjoyed BOtW but have it nowhere near my greatest games of all time. The constant pushing of how great these games are is almost a turn off. BOtW was fun and a great game on switch, I imagine TOTK is going to be the same but the non-stop slurpage is annoying. We re talking about games that hardly hold 30 fps with no voice acting in 2023. Every other game is reviewed critically, I feel like this game was a 10/10 before it even came out simply because its Zelda. Still excited to give it a try!

I bounced off BOTW because i hated breakable weapons, and cooking food. The open world just left me feeling aimless. It sounds like this is more of that but with something even worse -- Banjo Kazooie Nuts & Bolts. Yuck. Im going to give it a try because its a Zelda game, but im not expecting to love it. The corporate reviews are obviously as phony as usual. There is no way every single person loved it. not if its more BOTW but with vehicle building. Thats not 10/10 for everyone. Ill be the true judge. Stay tuned.

Man I wish Gamefreak would take the design philosophy of these devs to release a much more polished game. We dont need a pokemon game every damn year or so. Just take your time on it. I dont know jack about game design but to see the scaling of this game and its visuals versus what we got for Violet and Legends Arceus is just baffling to me. Tears of the kingdom is seriously impressive with what the team was able to squeeze out of the Tegra x1. Im glad this game exceeded Breath Of The Wild and was worth the hype.

I couldn't get through BotW at all. It bored me and felt too empty at times. TotK here has let me do some wild things so far! Building contraptions to help you get through the game and do some wild things, it's a blast. I build a raft and learned the hard way that you have to be careful. Also my first encounter with a flamethrower shield caught me off guard. I love it!
reply

It's the exact game, I don't get why everyone loves it, there is almost no improvement to the gameplay, even the visuals look exactly the same.
Not to mention the world is the exact same.
Botw was revolutionary, it was incredible, but this game, it doesn't do the same and it doesn't even try to do anything. It's like a huuuuuge DLC rather than a sequel.

i tried botw and didn't like how weapons broke and how you're dumped into this open world. Some of the shrines were confusing and the game is tough and there just wasn't enough explanation or things that interested me so i stopped playing it. This game looks like the same case to me. I loved some other zelda games though with twilight princess being my favorite

I won't slob its knob just cause it's Zelda. I'm about 5 hours into it and I don't love it. I don't hate it, I just think it's fine. It's waaaay too reliant on the ultrahand. I don't remember any Zelda game being this puzzle based feeling. At least in BOTW I didn't have to jerryrig a contraption as a mini bridge every 20 mins to get to another area.

This game is so boring, why is nobody saying this? Everything is copy paste and repetitive and the nuts and bolts shit is tiresome and breaks up gameplay. I think BotW might even be better because fusing and building is such a pain and you can't even fuse weapons from the menu, you have to select, drop, fuse, do it again (this is just bad design)
reply

I can kind of agree with you when it comes to the building and whatnot but the way that I think about it really is is that it's a mechanic that you can't just use and have fun with your required to use it and learn it for the game the game forces you to use the building mechanics an any mechanic that is a forced mechanic is never a fun mechanic

I never played BotW and know nothing of its story, would I be ok to pick up the new one and play it or will I be lost? Cant remember the last Zelda I played, Link to the Past for sure, but I know I played one on DS &/or 64. Its been awhile, but I need a game on my switch that's not on pc or the other 2 consoles.
