As a die hard Mass Effect fan: yeah, no. Big no. Y’all got that WAY backwards. ME should’ve been number 20, and Baldur’s Gate 4 should’ve been WAY closer to number 1. Because, ultimately, none of the choices you make across the games matter. You still stuck choosing between red, green, and blue. Whereas BG3 is the VERY DEFINITION of choice paralysis. Like, no two playthroughs are alike even if you went out of your way to try to replicate a previous playthrough. Like, what!
For reference, I’ve beaten the ME series AT LEAST a dozen times across generations and platforms. I’ve played E V E R Y S I N G L E permutation of E V E R Y S I N G L E C O N V E R S A T I O N across all three games! BG3 Homie, I’ve barely made it to act III after a literal year of (admittedly on and off) play across multiple saves. These games are not even on the same league. I’m honestly not sure if they’re even the same sport!

Mass effect really does it well along with FO New Vegas. The choices of characters in ME is crucial and changes everything. Although, some choices are easier than others. I always save ashley in every playthrough. Kaidan is just meh to me. However, the other choices are not that simple. Its also very cool to see that you have to play the next games to see what happens with your choices. I loved that aspect. Its also very realistic results.
The only problem I have with some of these games is the tediousness of some battles, parts, and dialogue. Glitches also suck when they ruin a game and you didn't save before the glitch except for the one time 10 levels and 8 quests back.

The anxiety comes before the game, as with so many to choose from, so many large-scale games consuming tens if not hundreds of hours & with so many releasing in close succession inevitably are all left with a quite large backlog. How do you pick one over another Do you neglect an older title in the backlog in favour of something new, knowing you may never get to many of the games you wanted to play. In my younger days, i used to play one or two games countless times before another would be released. Now, with the steady release of games mean it's hard to finish a game once before the next captures your attention.

Citizen Sleeper. I love the game. Your choices really matter. But you are also at the whims of the daily dice rolls. A character you love could live or die in whether you choose to use your best roll for something or you are desperate for energy or healing so chance those getting the best rolls. Loads of the game is on different timers too so you are constantly juggling personal needs with different story beats. Can you risk waiting a day on one storyline instead of another. It's fantastic but you have to live with your choices and their consequences. No save and reload to get round things either.

Played New Vegas for the first time last year and it completely changed my perspective on what a game could be!
Playing Tale Of Two Wastelands now. Just finished DC (FO3) at level 47, and traveled to the Mojave to start second playthrough of New Vegas. And it's immediately a completely different playthrough! With high stats and perks like Lady killer and Child At Heart, I have many more dialogue options (choices.
Fwiw, this go round, didn't listen to a word Vulpes Inculta had to say before I vaporized him! Caesar is next on the list.

I have two other games that give you freedom of choices, You basically create your own story and come across other people doing their thing in the world in both games. These games are: Tale of Immortal (A Cultivation game) and The Matchless Kung Fu (A Wuxia Game. These games are open world and let you create your own choice about how things will go and how you will deal with pretty much everything. Also these games have permadeath but worry not they are neither roguelike nor roguelite, You basically live your life and die as if it's real life.

Chrono Cross is a great game but it has way too many characters for a game that you only can have 3 characters in your party at a time and literally nothing else for them to do. There also is a lot of overlap with characters. For example there are 3 Black element Fist users and one of them you get as a story character. There are 2 Green element Staff users that are both story characters and you get them back-to-back. If there were more party slots or something to do with them and a little bit less overlap it wouldn't be too bad.

I played through each Mass Effect as they released on the 360 and then played through them all again in a few months on the PS5 with the collection when it released. Truly, sincerely, one of my favorite game series, stories and even the soundtrack and lighting in that game has a unique feel to it. Truly, not much like it, especially carrying over such narrative game to game. WIsh there was another coming sooner as all we got was a teaser for the, proper, sequel years ago and no word since: (

I really hate to be this guy, but this is another one of those Gameranx lists that ABSOLUTELY should have included Warframe somewhere in the list. This game continues to be a glaring blind spot for you guys on so many levels. I know many looter/shooters have a lot to them, but Warframe absolutely takes the cake in this regard, and many other, in the entire scope of gaming.
If you aren't paying attention to Warframe, you aren't paying attention to gaming and where it's going. - SKillUp

i actually loved the way detroit did the choices with showing the timelines and how many branches there were and where they branched off. it controlled my fomo, unlike life is strange where i couldn't tell where the choices were or what was super important vs barely mattered and so i got overwhelmed trying to figure out the best paths. detroit allowed me a clear and concise review after each section that allowed me to learn how the game quantified things a bit better

If the amount of characters that you can play as passes to be on this list. Then you should include Dota2 here. There are over 120 characters and they are all unique and separate from each other. And you have to know what they do because you're not only playing as them you're playing against them. And of course there is skill build, item build, talent tree and facets. It's very complicated and it's just too many choices.

did you honestly just put COD on a list like this Nobody would ever play COD on console if they had to keep reinstalling 200GBs of a game. They damn well better have made it so you only have to install 100GBs to play multiplayer. Otherwise people would never bother after uninstalling the first time. Either way its a ridiculous amount of GBs. F call of duty and all its fanboys that still give them money.

I will never understand how people can feel like more choice = bad. I get it, people suffer from choice paralysis, so science tells me, but for me having more and more options extremely outweighs feeling of not being quite sure what to do in the moment, especially when it comes to games. More choice = more ways to play = more unique and interesting gameplay = more value for your money.

Just throwing out this as an idea for a list - Games that might not hold up if you're playing them for the first time now. ie, they could be widely agreed upon as good, even great, games, but objectively part of that came from experiencing it back when standards were different. I've personally had that happen a few times and would be curious if others have too (and with what.

Fallout New Vegas is a perfect example of how to design a game with infinite choices well. Sure you have the classic good, neutral and bad choice, but if you have low/high standing with a faction, super high (or low) trait and/or a specific perk you suddenly have additional dialogue or extra interactions. All depending on how you play the game.

These are the games I wish I could have played when I was a kid. But I wasn't allowed to game.
I have such a hard time committing to Dishonoured, Prey, BG3, New Vegas, OuterWilds, Deus Ex, Become Human and System Shock. I get paralysis by analysis, get absolutely nowhere in the time I have to play them, and give up lol.

I've lost count of how many times I've played Fallout New Vegas at this point. But I've never gotten sick of doing 'yet another playthrough' even after logging over 1700 hours in it on Steam. I STILL randomly find and see new things every playthrough by going ways I didn't think of before.

Yo! Blastcorp! Oh man, I LOVE those moments when something/someone reminds you of a game you loved and spent so much time with decades ago that you kind of feel a weird bit of guilt you forgot even existed, welp I know what ROM I'm playing later tonight!
Good shout Jake, good shout

Red Dead 2 had so many side quests and things to do I am sure I could do another playthrough of JUST that and spend just as long as I did focusing only on main quest and STILL have a great time. Good job Rockstar, I'll return to RDR2 remaster one day im sure! :)
