Last week, Russell was in attendance at the Delsea Drive-in, the last drive-in movie theater in New Jersey. He met up with C. C. and Rana from the DRIVE-IN Film Festival, a group dedicated to getting the word out about drive-in theaters across the country, and he also got a tour of the grounds from owner, John Doc DeLeonardis, MD

When I was a kid in 1967 my mom was planning to take me and my brothers to the jet drive inn to see Joy in the Morning starring Richard Chamberlain and Yvette Mimieux. Then she changed her mind. The next morning it was in the front new paper, Jet Dive in Raided. The second feature was a self-applied x-rated feature, no one under 16 was admitted. The cult classic and now r rated Swedish film, Inga. I was shocked as a little kid. I never realize that the government decided what adults can see and not see. This was my first confrontation with censorship. It would inspire me to oppose censorship. What was the charge? A portrayal of a 16-year-old, by a 20-odd-something actress in the film. Underage patrons were allowed to stay and see the movie. Under 16. It really infuriated me and I was only 10. Imagine if we did go to see the film and stayed for the second? Mom would have gotten in trouble or may be she would have left realizing wheat the movie was all about and left before the fuzz showed up.

My local drive-in got bought by two brothers who have their own tv show in Boston called Phantom Gourmet where their father, a famous sports commentator goes in to all kinds of eateries and rates them on the show. The brothers bought the drive-in now their food is gourmet food. They also do special screenings during the summer such as The Grateful Dead Movie on 4/20 then again on 5/30. Every September they show all old films. I've seen Jaws there four years in a row. And in October they show all Horror films. That's why I only go in September and October. I hate modern movies. Drive-ins are coming back but they're catering to soccer moms instead of showing some love to us old timers who want to see a dusk to dawn bill. There was a place that did a dusk to dawn marathon but it was all movies like Herbie: Fully Loaded and stuff that came out around that time.

The one nearest me always has a special 3rd late night horror feature shown on 35mm film. it's always worth the 45min drive. seen 30+ movies there last summer and looking forward to this season. I will drive out of the way to others for horror and sci-fi features shown on 35mm! The drive-in is THE BEST! I have several friends in different towns and we all drive to meet up there at the drive-in on the weekends. so fun! Also, several times each summer they do all weekend long horror movie festivals (5-6 movies each night, free weekend long camping, free breakfast, free coffee 24/7, concession stand open 24/7, daytime bands and shows, daytime vendors tents VHS/Dvd and horror movie stuff, etc) and all the movies are shown on 35mm film and it's just all amazing!

yes I been going to the drive inn since 2012, which how it all started the ball rolling for me was the year 2011 when I went to my parents cottage one weekend and was going to see kung Fu panda 2 with couple of buddy's, we eat dinner late and decided to not go, and I said to myself I will go next year and when that time came the drive inn closed down it doors for the same reason what is talk about in the video the digital conversion plus the son father was ill so that didn't help, so being bum out on that happening I was looking other one place to see the movies, and I found out the Sunset Barrie Drive-in and being eve since 2012 and make it a goal to go ever year as I'm serious movies buff/
Cinefile person as I luv the movies

Wow, what a surprise to see you featuring this theater. The Delsea was my local drive-in growing up. My parents used to take me and my younger sister there when we were kids for films like Herbie the Love Bug and the Pink Panther movies. When I was older and driving it was a popular date night, even in the 80's. There used to be a bowling alley in front of the theater, which you could drive around behind and see the screen through the fence. I remember watching purple rain with a friend this way since they had switched to radio for the sound. Very cool to see this theater working again, and in digital! Kudos to the Drive-In Film festival for making the old new again!

Its absolutely true that we as kids were aloud to totally run amuck before & during the movies. Usually in a large space out in front below the giant screen. Many fond memories were made during those times. Football, rugby, tag, chase. Sometimes a kid fight would break out. And the parents got drunk & high while sorda watching a movie. It was fun, it was safe, it was bliss. I even had my first kiss the summer before 5th grade. We snuck away from the other kids & got inside her parents van w them outside. Just one of many amazing drive in memories. Don't get me started on our high school days. It could be viewed as obscene these days. Lol

I miss going to the drive-in. It's been about 25 years since I last went to one. My buddies and I went to the store and stocked up on snack cakes and sodas, and headed to the theatre. It was a double feature, and before the show, they would have Three Stooges shorts playing (not that you could see them that well since it wasn't dark enough yet, but still very cool. I think there are a couple of drive-ins still open within driving distance of me, but the closest one is about 3-4 hours away. As much as I would love to introduce my kids to the experience, it would take some planning for such a long day.

This brings a tear to my eye. I remember back when I was a kid I used to go to our local Drive In movie theater at least once a month with my family, playing games in the field in front of the screen before the movie starts, climbing in the bed of the truck with a blanket and watching the movie. This wasn't all that long ago either, I remember watching Jurassic Park 3 at a Drive In. I would love to open a Drive In movie theatre where I live again. One theater tried to do something similar and have a projector in the parking lot. it just wasn't the same.

i used to love going to the Mclendon Triple Bayou Drive in Theatre, it was off the gulf freeway in texas city texas, when hurricane alicia came and damaged the theatre they never did reopen, it was a lot of fun when we could get a whole car load of people in for 99 cents on i think it was a monday night, it was awesome, and they would always play at least 3 movies all for the price of just getting in,

I went to the Sundance Kid last year and I loved the retro experience of it. I saw Monsters University there. But near the end of the film, my window started fogging up and wipers didn't help. So I've got a tip for you; unless you want to run your engine to get heat or a/c, get anti-fog spray for your windshield and apply outside and inside as car windows tend to fog up at night during the summer months.

I worked at a drive-in here in Jacksonville Florida from 1976 until 1981 I hate it that everything's going digital I miss the days of the old 35 mm projectors and the chatter of the projector that was part of the Nostalgia they need to start showing old classic horror movies and Grindhouse that's what people want to see let's get back to nostalgia the heck with all the new release stuff

Does the Delsea routinely show older nostalgic films from the 60's and 70's? If so, I definitely want to drive up for visit. I noticed the shot of your marquee which read Willie Wanka 1971. I didn't know that drive in theaters even showed vintage movies, I thought they could only exhibit first run films? Can anyone confirm this? Thanks!

For those not familiar or have yet ti hit a drivein. A couple things you may not know is most of not all driveins show a double feature. You cant beat two movies for less than the price of one. One other thing is ticket price is per car load and not person. Support your local or nearest drive in

I'm an aspiring filmmaker sophomore in high school currently enrolled in film classes. If you could help me out by viewing my last video, a little cinematic shot compilation, and possibly giving a like, I would really appreciate it. -Weaver Films

No drive-ins near me anymore in Southeastern PA. We used to go to Diamond State drive-in below Dover, DE. Then that one closed too. I'm thinking about getting a few people together to head down to Delsea. Would they allow bikers there?

So weird. I went to this drive in not too long ago. It really is a great time. You can bring your own food and drinks too for a small fee. But I will say the food they serve is really good. I think I might go back now next weekend.

Man, this makes me want to hit a drive-in. Last drive-in movie I saw was a double showing of Eraser and Twister in 1996.
Went with friends in my mom's minivan. We took the backseat out, turned it around and watched it from there.
