Characters In The Last Jedi Who Mean More Than You Realized Colin: Using content outside of the movie to give characters a story is not very fulfilling for movie-only fans. People will interpret it as a merchandising ploy to get you to buy books and comics. Speaking just for the movies, the list of characters in the video above all had potential and yet none of them really delivered because many people will never know their stories and therefor we will never be attached to them. In other words The Last Jedi suffered from the same thing that Suicide Squad did--lack of character development for an arguable majority of the characters. Both of these movies are already long so you can't jam any more story into it so the only option is to expand on their stories in smaller groups / individual movies the way Marvel did. That way you feel more invested when they come together. This is admittedly hard to do given the format of the Star Wars episodes and the fact that setup films don't really exist in that franchise.

Characters that mean more than we think? Are you shitting me? Hux is a dope! He makes Admiral Ozzel look like a genius! Phasma, what had like 10 lines of dialog total in two films. Maul had less and still had way more impact in TPM. Maz? She was fleshed out half decently in TFA, but was a bit role in TLJ, so please tell us how they mean more than we know. Fan theories count for squat anymore. The only canon is what is put in front of you in the theater. On top of that, like I said down below, the whole thing is fiction. These characters don't mean a god damn thing and will be forgotten within a decade. This video was just a lame attempt at damage control of a very poor film.

Hux is turned into a joke in The Last Jedi, one of several characters Johnson ruined because he didn't really understand them or their importance. Hux helps make the FO menacing, but turning him into a joke strips the FO of some of its menace, especially after killing off Snoke. Johnson intentionally doesn't let us know much about Holdo so we won't trust her in her conflict with Poe. It's a bait and switch - a gotcha - one among many Johnson uses to drive his story forward. Her introduction is a weak bit of expository dialogue, and we never really get to know her, making her sacrifice lack the emotional impact it could have had. Maz's appearance in TLJ is pure fan service.

False. None of them mean anything. They made sure to make us feel this way when they literally told us that everyone that we thought would have some sort of deeper meaning was nobody and came from nowhere. and showed us in the end that this is set to be a theme in the future.
In the new movie, most of the characters accomplished literally nothing and many of the characters whom fans had hoped to rely on for the future of the saga are clearly not going to be there.
Of the characters who will be there, a number of them have been reduced to the objects of cheap love stories and punchlines.

Maz was a plot device to explain the force to Rey and give her a lightsaber she inexplicably found (a story for another time ) A lightsaber Luke threw away after being found when he didnt want to be found (on an island he left a map to. Phasma was a useless character to sell merch. Just as the Knights of Ren were useless characters to make Kylo look like a badass and Snoke was only a WiFi connection for Rey and Kylo to have a FaceTime chat. These could have all been established correctly, had Rian Johnson taken due care and diligence instead of shitting all over the Star Wars legacy.

How do these characters mean a god damn thing? It is a fictional movie for one thing. Half of them are dead in their fictional movie universe now, and the ones that aren't dead, only had bit parts or were useless. Trying to salvage a poor film, and failing rather badly. IMDB ratings for the film are now at 78 and might still fall some more. Disney is still making a killing, but this is just mirroring the other trilogies. Each successive movie made less cash. If they hit the half billion mark this time they will be lucky.

Not one god damn new character is worth a penny, not how theyarer fleshed out anyway. They are given crappy story arcs that lead to nowhere and have to split time with other arcs, so their time is limited to really let the audience to get to know what makes them tick. In the original trilogy, you only had one or two story arcs going on at a time, thus more time for the characters to interact, etc. Multiple story arcs are fine, but some of them in this movie really didn't mean anything with regards to the main plot.

everyones saying shit like well the films were shit if these vids are necessary
theyre not necessary, theyre just cool extra info, yeah TLJ wasnt perfect and yeah they wasted time with bits of plot that werent as strong as others, but all this detail doesnt need to be explained anyway? general hux is a general, thats fine, everyone can accept that. we all figured out that mas was a cool character with lots of bts stuff but it wasnt essential to the movie so didnt need to be explored etcetcetc

It is just the opposite!
General Hux => from a military head of the First Order, is now demoted to a comic relief. He could be replaced by any other officer. Really. He could be compared to Grand Moff Tarkin on The Force Awakens, but now is essentially thrown away, lke Snoke, Phasma, Maz, Rey's backstory/parents, and, in some degree, Luke itself. The great Jedi who could change everything became an incompetent, irresponsible, impulsive coward.
Seriously, terrible, terrible video.
