There is more to unpack in this under-7-minute film than there has been in just about any animation I've seen this year so far. We've got.
-affirmation for natural, beautiful, strong willed hair that is a hallmark of black culture
-a daddy/daughter bonding story
-subversion of our Disney-trained expectations with mom being absent because she's fighting her own battle rather than because she died
-mom being victorious
-affirmation that a woman can be just as beautiful without her hair, especially when it proves her strength
And the fact that Dove is a sponsor makes me wonder if they didn't steal writers from the people who made those Thai My Beautiful Woman short films. Those three films were made to advertise soap.

The dad here is hot, lol.
Wish I could've grown up with my dad as when I visited him as an adult, we had so much in common. Both of us like anime and have the same music interests. We were talking about music and I started singing Numb from Linkin Park. No one else knew what we were singing and it wasn't usual black music but it didn't matter; I was just shocked as hell that my dad knew the lyrics! He's a computer geek and I have a passing fancy in information systems and have been considering going back to school to major in it. I'm. so much like him, it kind of hurts.
It wouldn't last, though. things happened and we grew apart again. But it was still really good to get to know more about him.

I saw the short film first
Then the vlog next, and Zuri, Steven, and Zuris mom are actually real people and the vlog is a real vlog
Then this video to see what went into making the short and it makes me appreciate it more.
Fun fact: I lost my hairbrush the day I watched the short, sucks that I cant brush my hair and my hair is a fine type and it gets tangled easily.

Ms Mojo Presenter, it was rude and insulting of you to us Africans/African Americans/Blacks to call Zuri's hair wild and claim she wants to tame it! These are are offensive, racist, denigrating adjectives to use of our hair. Our hair is simply hair, their is nothing wild about it! And there is no frustration that comes with grooming natural hair!

It was such a moving short story. I teared up a little before watching the main movie ( Angry Birds. It gently brought the awareness of the difficulty of dealing with a nappy hair and families/relatives battling cancer. The point is the hair is a crown on your head. Even with no hair, there is still a crown.

It was amazing to have a short film that black girls could relate to for once. There were so many Easter eggs that all black children and adults would recognize and is great awareness for those that arent yet acquainted with this texture of hair. I love it!

I cried a lot, I love the short film, the message I rescue the most is about the value of a father committed to his children and that when he meets his needs with great empathy, a healthy person is raised emotionally

I remember when my father first did my hair. My mother was in the hospital having my little sister. He did a a terrible job I went to school crying and thank God my aunt work there and fix my hair

I have this book in my classroom and have met the illustrator. My little girls in my class love this book. The older boys think it is neat that a man wrote a book about a little girl.

Great information! I absolutely loved the video. However, style her hair would be a far more culturally aware statement than tame her wild her. Nonetheless, I enjoyed it!
