As traumatizing as Pinocchio was as a kid I kind of prefer the old version over the new one. Now I know many people say that Disney is now trying to be more sensitive and kid friendly towards children, but what people forget is Pinocchio its supposed to be dark. The story itself is meant to warn children that they need to listen to their parents and follow the rules otherwise they will suffer severe and traumatic consequences. Pinocchio is insufferable because hes a child who doesnt know any better and yes he makes bad choices but he is also punished for them in the most horrifying ways. But this proves that our actions are not without consequences. And even No the villains get away with their crimes that also sent the message to children thats such dangers will always be out there and the best way to avoid them is to follow the rules and listen to their parents. People either need to go all the way with the story of Pinocchios dark theme or not at all there is no in between for Pinocchio.

I'm sorry but the Wizard of Oz is a creepy movie. Sure it's colorful and it stars Judy Garland, but there are several themes that as kids went over our head. not to mention the witch and flying monkeys. also the wizard imagery before toto discovers the man behind the curtain is in no way friendly or deserving of the praise the ozians give him.
I noticed Darby O'Gill wasn't on here. My sister hated that movie because the banshee scene was scary. Far scarier than Labyrinth, which btw has positive imagery for children compared with other movies.
Ferngully needs to be mentioned here, as well as several others.

Disneys Pinocchio was surprisingly rated G and this movie was scary as hell, its like kids were watching an R rated equivalent to a G movie that turned into a horror movie fest. And I think it was awesome! This was Disney at their best!
Raiders of the lost ark was fun but scary and PG-13 didnt exist yet and When I was as a kid I thought this movie was fun at first but somehow scared the hell out of me and this movie was rated PG, You know, for kids!

The folks at Mojo continue to be some of the most uneducated people online because several of the movies in this list are not even childrens movies even Disneys Pinocchio was not made for children it was actually made for adults in movie theaters before the advent of television. It would really help if just one person at Mojo would actually pick up and read a history book.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is actually a Bond film. We have our hero who is surrounded by his gadgets. Our villain is a megalomaniac hold up in his opulent lair carrying out some dastardly deed in a far-away exotic land. The child catcher is his evil henchman. There is the female lead with the silly name. And we have a cool car that can do amazing things other cars cant.

Watership Down is a wonderful book! It's a great adventure book for ages 10 to adult. The animated version is disappointingly creepy, lacks the book's charm and really isn't for little kids. I think parents often think that because a movie is animated or has cute furry puppets in it it's family friendly which isn't always the case.

Raiders if the list ark definitely freaked me out at the end mostly because it was supposed to be god doing it. another show that freaked me out was that story book short tail about Hansel and Greta jone Collins plays the witch and Ricky Shrouder plays hansel that did get pretty scary in parts.

Good list. Personally, I think 'Fern Gully' might deserve an honorable mention, just because Tim Curey's portrayal of Hexus is (along with Scar from 'Lion King') is one of the most terrifying villans in a kids movie.
. the fact that Gremlins was rated 'PG' blows the mind.

You seem to be completely ignorant of horror and death that is already here, and no age is immune from it. Didn't you ever read the stories from the Brothers Grimm or other fairy tales and Nursery Rhymes. Come on grow up and let kids grow up with their fantastic stories.

I loved Return to Oz as a kid. As an adult I wonder why! I watched Raiders as a kid, but my mom always made me close my eyes during the face-melting. Definitely agree about Labrynth. I saw it for the first time at 10 or 11, but it was definitely hard to swallow.

Okay, but the movies that absolutely traumatized me as a younger child, was E. T, The Never-Ending Story Gremlins, and legit anything Tim Burton-:
But All Dogs Go To Heaven shall always have a special place in my heart. ( RIP Judith Barsi, tho )

Petes dragon about a orphan sold to the gogans to do all the slave work and the songs happiest home about killing pete and every little piece about cutting up the dragon it was so bad that the remake took out the gogans and took out the music

Raiders of the Lost Ark doesn't really count as a kids movie. Most of us watched it though. Stories for children are often written to frighten children in order to teach them morals. All Dogs Go To Heaven is a great example of this.

i love labyrinth and the nightmare before Christmas and Beetlejuice and return to oz but return to oz creeped me out as a kid and it still does with the heads and the wheelers friggin gave me nightmares,

I read Watership Down in 5th grade and also saw the movie. Loved it.
Saw Raiders when I was 12. Loved it. Not scarred at all. In fact, I was in awe.
Guess I was weird or just not that fragile.

The first time I ever seen gremlins I was extremely young I only seen a small part of it before my dad told me to go in the other room but I had already seen the gremlin get blown up in the microwave

Exact definition of kids notwithstanding I would hold _Willow_ as an honorable mention for the, eh, army of pigs scene. Feel free to look it up _if you don't want to get any sleep tonight. _
reply

What about Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory and Pee-Wee's Big Adventure both movies had messed up scenes in a kids movie! David Bowie in Labrynth legitimately gave me nightmare though!
reply

I remember when the one and only time I watched Old Yeller. It was an award for the kids who had the best grades. We all sat in a classroom and were trying to back our tears at the end.

Im old enough to be a child of the 80s. I was absolutely traumatized by dark films during this time. Even the animated stuff. (Secret of NIMH and Black Cauldron- IM TALKING TO YOU)
reply

E. T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (1981) traumatized me when I was 2 years old. Especially those horrible people in space suits & especially during the scene when they defibrillated him.
reply

I can't believe you guys didn't even add
The Neverending Story.
Labyrinth is NOT Scary. Your list good but I think you need another 10, because I can think of others.

reply

I actually got The Wizard of Oz for my birthday one year and threw a fit because I Really wanted Return to Oz not Wizard of Oz So I loved that one, but I was a brat
reply

I was scared of the Witches when I was younger, that's because I thought all women with long nails were witches except my aunt I was used to her having long nails.
reply

How could you forget The Devil that was in Legend staring Tom Cruise? I was 8 years old when that movie came out and to this day, it still creeps me out.
reply

After having read Brother's Grim tales or Charles Perrault ones you're ready to watch any Disney's adaptations. Disney ones are soft really soft.
reply

this is some serious pearl clutching response. WONT SOMEBODY THINK OF THE CHILDREN? This stuff is tame -Kids are fine for watching all these movies.
reply

How did they leave out the train in Stand By Me? And why would anyone want to miss the bar scene in Gremlins?
Slap that baby, make him free.
