I first went to a In N Out in the late 60's and early 70's. The closest one to us is 140 miles away. During recent travels we went to a Shake Shack for the very first time. The shake was pretty good and had to be eaten with a spoon. It didn't have quite enough chocolate for me. The burger was great! It tastes different than an In N Out burger. I like the In N Out shake better as they are more chocolaty and can be eaten without a spoon. I hate using straws for anything so I prefer a shake that I can drink slowly, slow because it is thick. As for which is better, I don't think a comparison is appropriate. Both have different tastes. In N Out tastes like the burgers you would get at small mom and pop, hole in the wall, burger places in the 1950's. They taste fresher and they are crunchy with ample amounts of lettuce, tomato and onion. They have a great sauce and the Shake Shack does not. There is a Five Guys Burgers and Fries across the street from the Shake Shack we went to. When we travel to the area again we are going to try it to see how it compares. Some of the best burgers I have found across the country and the best malts (they taste better than a shake to me) I've had have been at Dairy Queens. I also like finding a good A & W, which are becoming far fewer in numbers. I don't drink sodas, but love an A & W on tap.

I go with Shake Shack. They are both delicious and I know that In n' out has better prices and actually kinda better flavor, but shake shack has wayy better ingredients (I'm not just talking about the meat, as in n' out's also great, but also veggies, bun and stuff) And after eating an in n' out burger I feel heavy and not well, after eating a shake shack burger I feel great. They are both really yummy, It just depends on the person, cause if you are more of a healthy eater who does not have a problem with splurging then you may prefer shake shack, if you are more of a person who wants food for the flavor and in a lower budget, then in n' out's for you. I personally like shake shack better, but it just depends, you can't compare they are different styles.

I-N-Outs burger, that MUST include grilled unions and resulting flavor burst, blows shake shacks ok burger & soggy bun, out the door. However, In-N-Outs remaining suite. shakes, fries. mediocre. go just for the burgers unless u can look the other way while imbibing. Shake Shack only stands out on above average shakes and above average decor for dining. Everything else is ok as in whats the fuss, coupled with outrageously high, shockingly high prices about double of competitors for example 5 for fries! The real success of Shake Shack has been the ability to create undeserved hype. In-N-Out. unpretentious, excellent, good value too at half the cost.

A good burger has synergy of ingredients where all flavors work well together and complement each other. In n out has that, Shake shack has a lot of good ingredients that don't really help each other out all that much. Plus the buttered buns? Butter is just a way to mask a bland burger, mayo or thousand island will suffice. Also, if you think shake shack is better, you ought to since your paying the price for what should be a better burger. In n out still has more bang for your buck. NYC and NJ never really had any iconic burger franchise, I get why natives there would rep it, it's a regional pride thing.

I'm team In-n-Out all the way but I have to be honest. It's not because of the meat. Everyone who eats (and loves) an In-n-Out burger says it tastes fresh because of the produce. And I agree. As an entire package, In-n-Out is the most compelling. But I can understand for some people, who don't care about the accoutrements, and just want a patty-focused burger, In-n-Out is nothing special. I just think those people are a little short-sighted: )

Shake shake is a national chain. It is traded on wall street. Where do you get off with that Boutique crap? The idea of thinner paddies is lost on you. The best part of a burger paddy is the char. Double the paddies double the char. Potato buns? I'll drop some chips in my burger if I'm longing for Ireland's 20th century staple.
