Testing 5 Different Sealers on Terracotta Saucers! Which One is the Best? Garden Answer handmade: I used a clear acrylic spray. Seems to work good. The only thing is, as you spray it on, certain areas absorb the spray (and look wet) and some sections still look dry even though there is a good uniform coat. I thought it was because I didn't let the saucers completely dry, but I also sprayed a brand new one- same thing. Another advantage to sealing is no more black mold and stains. But I'm still having second thoughts on using sealer/ spray on the rest of my saucers as I search for a more natural solution.

With sprays if you get the white peppering effect after it drys is because either cool of temperature with too much much moisture in the air not allowing the alcohol to evaporate at a even rate, or even extremely hot exposure before allowing to naturally dry out like a blow dryer or even oven temperatures trying to cheat with a faster end product.
That's why professional painter's refuse to work on certain days and why a dry room was called for projects.

My trick is to use vintage or new glazed ceramic plates. It's great for the wallet, nose, time, and environment as far as the drainage tray goes. However, of I want to upcycle terracotta pots they must be sealed inside and out to prevent bleed through on the white paint. I'm finding this out the hard way which is a bummer. Anyone know if sealing afterwards inside will be sufficient or if I need to remove the paint first?

I can advocate for the longevity for the Rustoleum treated saucer! I treated a saucer a year ago after watching this. I couldn't find the paint version so I used the spray, about 3 coats, and it works perfect! Almost too perfect, I forgot to empty it after watering a plant and a day later all the water was still sitting there, not a drop have soaked through! I've since started treating all my saucers with it!

Apples to apples would have been to follow each sealers directions. Using five coats on all was probably not necessary. Maybe thats why some were fails. I dont personally want to do five coats Id like to see it done again using exactly what the manufacturers on each bottle suggest. I wouldve avoided the Mod podge just because it said 5 coats. I love all your videos.

i have a feeling modge podge has a 21 day cure time. like its dry and relatively sealed but not water tight for 21 days. Im not 100% on that but past experience would make me leave something with pva on it for 21-30 day before submitting to water. I pretty much never use it on anything that comes in contact with water frequently because it is prone to this.

Great demo by the way, I use Rustoleum sealers. I have just recently started painting terracotta pots sealing them before and after painting, but have noticed sometimes the paint chips off, do you think this is because I am not using enough sealer to finish? Not sure if you would know but would love your feed back. cheers and have a great day.

Hello Laura, first of all thank you for share this interesting explanation about different sealers on Terracotta saucers, I have a question, after use for example a sealer like Rust-oleum and beause I need a different color different to the clear one, can I use over this layers an acrylic paint like Royal Langnickel?
Thanks in advance.

DRYLOK makes a clear low sheen penetrating sealer that js formulated for all types of masonry. I haven't tried it yet but I will be giving it a lot of consideration as I want to make a concrete bird bath.
However DRYLOK Extreme is suggested for outdoor pots, statues, etc. I'm just not sure if the Extreme is a clear sealant.

Very frustrated. I have bought over the past 2 years many planters which I thought were terra cotta from Lowes Home Depot and they look shocking, and cannot return them. They crumble peel and when I water its orange all over my patio. Now to remove all the plants they may not survive. Would doing this procedure help
