A great little fishing session from the shore given the time of year. Trying out various methods in one session shows that not limiting yourself to one type of fishing can produce great results. Fishing a float for Garfish and bigger baits at distance for whatever was lurking below. Any day spent fishing is a great days fishing!

Thanks John, good stuff as usual.
My son, a Course Angler, is in the process of looking at buying a fishfinder for his kayak. We are at one of the only villages on the non-tidal stretch of the Trent that has a kayak-fishing approved stretch. I wondered if you had thought of doing a piece on fishfinders?
Not so much the 'how'; more a buyer's guide, especially because some of these vendors want to lock you into agreements that involve total dependance on their company for mapping purposes, ie you can't do it without them. User tips from an experienced angler are always useful, it's buying the right one first that is difficult if you have no experience of them, though. Thanks mate.

ahhhhh SEE your tackle box IS same as mine, what are those damn slots for in the top tray? inbetween that orange vitamin drink tablets tube and the black scales pouch there? when i asked you before you didnt know what i meant but - 8: 42 you will know what im talking about, ive never understood what they are for because they cant be for spools of line cus they too close and a spool wont fit, you cant close lid, so what are they for? i see you have nothing in them or anything, its bugged me ever since i bought the box haha, hopefully you can enlighten me, maybe im being bit thick but i just cant see what they are intended for.

Hey John, localish to your mark! Tried down there loads of times for a thornback and no joy. Tons of spidercrabs, blue swimmer crabs and not much else. Is now a good time to target them? I've have fished a few metres to your left with sand eel, prawn and crab and further along towards. Fished pulleys and droppers and singles etc all ranges states of tides etc. Just wanted to no what works for you? Thanks for the video. Cheers for the advice Will

A decent size gar is actually pretty decent to eat. I remember catching a bunch of them off Torquay pier back in the '80s and I grilled them for my Nanna who absolutely loved them. She was visiting down from Bedford and said she never had fish so fresh and lovely. The bones are green but no worries, it's due to a harmless pigment called biliverdin, which is coincidentally what makes bruises in human skin look blue/green-ish.

Great video John. Thanks for all the help and info. I love the Rock fishing myself. Strange thing happening here in Cork, south of Ireland I've notice that there is no hold up in Pollock and the odd few mackerel. Usually the spot I fish, the Pollock are gone by now to return in numbers by end of feb. It's really bizarre, and the mackerel I've never caught them this time of year and I'm still picking the odd one up. Is this normal?

John thanks for uploading these vids mate they're brilliant. Next time I go raying I'm gonna try your up and over on one rod and the pulley rig I normally use on the other. I normally always use grip leads but I'll try a normal lead as well -- every days a school day always something new to learn. thanks again, tightlines -

Great video again. Just included a chopping board to my kit. Why I haven't before. Trying to chop mackerel on rocks, crackers in hindsight. My bag is full of pasta sauce tubs with various bits. I don't know why just ended up keeping them. Pipe lagging for my rigs, need to get organised.

Another great video mate. I heard u say about frozen mackerel going soggy when defrosted. - Try filliting ur mackerel first and then coat them with plenty of salt- before freezing them. - and they will be tougher when defrosted. Also keep those videos coming mate-. Their just superb! Matt

Hi John,
Would you be able to let me know what tripod you use? It looks nice and stable. I have tried a couple now and they don-t triangulate enough and end up being top heavy especially when on the piers. Many thanks Ben.
