Best & Worst CPUs of 2020 (Gaming, Workstation, Coding, Overclocking, & Disappointment)

We're recapping the best CPUs of 2020 for gaming, programming, 3D art, video editing, and more, but will also be talking about the top disappointing CPUs of 2020. This content talks about some of the best CPUs of 2020. Our goal for this content is less data-centric and more focused on trying to help quickly recap the high points for the year. Many of these are obviously in short supply, but the content should still help in planning purchases assuming you get lucky and spot one in stock. Benchmarks include previously released data on video editing, programming and code compile, compression and decompression, FFMPEG, Adobe Premiere, Adobe Photoshop, and more from the workstation category (like Blender). We also have gaming benchmarks to look at the best gaming CPUs of 2020, showing an upset in the second half of the year that tilted favor toward AMD and away from Intel's 10-series CPUs from earlier in the year. As always, you can find the full, in-depth reviews in separate content pieces. The goal for these round-ups is just to provide a flyover view of things. It is mostly meant to help people with Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and end of year holiday PC building.

Some of the AMD names do make sense in the worst trend category, like the 3000G, it's following the same pattern as other 3000 series cpu, 3000G, 3100, 3200G, 3300X,3400G, 3500 and so on. and some of the Intel and AMD APU names I've never heard before. Like I can't seem to find the 3150G/GE outside of just spec lists, same for the 4300GE and 4300U. Also the C4930, doesn't exist, was that meant to be the G4930?

I bought a 3600x (yes, I paid 50 for a letter) and it never hit it's advertised 4.4ghz boost clock. It would sit 4.35ghz all core and it performed well. I had to RMA it due to a memory controller error and I was sent a 3600XT as a replacement. While I didn't notice a real FPS boost in games, this chip sits a 4.5ghz all core and regularly boosts to 4.65. I'm pleased with it.

Is there any need for a 5800x over a 5600x ? I want to future proof for about 5 years and we play alot of arma 3 which is very CPU bound.
Im building my first pc stepping up from a tired laptop (970m and 6700hq). I am wanting to pair it with either a 6800xt or 3080 ti/super when it comes out.
Love your stuff to, especially the more recent mountain biking!

I've never seen a CPU or GPU whose model number couldn't have been shortened to 3 digits plus its various alphabet soup. So when they go into the double digits on generation numbers, they'd finally justify 4 digits. What would be wrong with 1090K with no i9 instead of i9-10900K ? They'd still have room for 9 in-between variants thanks to the rightmost zero.

To be fair it is kind of unfair to do such a compare end of year, cause AMD is releasing in Q3 - Q4 and Intel in Q1 - Q2 and 6 month difference can mean a lot.
It is like asking which phone is the fastests in Summer clearly the Samsung and Huaweis in Winter mostly the new iPhone.

And here I thought AMD would win every category, but Intel slipped in there just! I knew the XT series of CPUs would be your pick for worst this year although shared with Intel. Seriously when will Intel just give up on these locked CPUs

CPU not in stack hmm no wonder if all CPU are in Slovenia and no one buy because prices are too high or mostly people here buy pre built. I soo that moustly here prices went around 100 up for amd 5000 series. I'm weiting for some price drope

I dont think the 10400f is too bad of a deal. You can get it for 140 in europe, where as the ryzen 3600 went up in price to 200 . Yeah its a little slower, but for people who just throw it in their PC its not that big of a difference

When Steve was calling out the worst names of the year, I was like: Gesundheit.
What an utter clustercuddle that was (not from Steve but the companies and and their decision to mess up the naming so badly).

RIP Intel and Nvidia. You can't hate on AMD for pricing the best cpu out (NOT RDR2) a little higher than the two previous chips. What was the 8700K launched at or the 9900k lmao, not even in the same category.
