The Best Deadlift Exercise You Aren't Doing It-s awkward. Uncomfortable. You can-t lift as heavy. And it takes coordination and balance- I-m talking about one of the most underutilized but oh so important deadlift variations out there- The Single Leg Deadlift. All too often we avoid moves that challenge our balance because they make us feel uncomfortable in a way we don-t like and uncoordinated. We may even dislike them because we feel we have to regress the movement instead of being able to beast mode out heavy loads like we can with other bilateral deadlift variations. But for the exact reasons we often don-t like unilateral balance moves, like the single leg deadlift, we need to include them MORE. They are super key to helping us stay strong as we get older! Unilateral balance moves are a great way to correct any imbalances between both sides. They help us strengthen our weaker side without our stronger side compensating. They help us avoid perpetuating the imbalance, which we can often do when lifting heavy with a bilateral move because, to move the weight, we simply rely on that stronger side. So if you do want to beast mode out heavier deadlifts, the single leg deadlift is a great accessory move to help you build up. It will still target your glutes and hamstrings to train that hip hinge movement pattern but in a way that will help you correct underlying recruitment issues! And it will also help you become more focused and intentional about your foots connection to the ground. So much of powering that deadlift really does come from us pushing the ground away. And this focus on our foundation will pay off in terms of improving our stability and balance even in other moves. The Single Leg Deadlift is a key exercise to help us focus on improving our stability from the ground up while improving that mind-body connection. We have to remember a big part of lifting heavier is the strength of our mind-body connection. Our ability to recruit muscles efficiently and effectively allows us to lift more. It-s why we want to include moves like this to really allow us to focus in on what we feel working and strengthen those weak links! So how can you improve your Single Leg Deadlift form to embrace and master this amazing movement? Here-s how I cue the move to help clients dial in their form

Nice summary. I've reintroduced these back into my routine over the last month, and I definitely don't have the balance I used to, particularly when doing the single KB variation. I regressed to a 2KB variation, at least for my first set, but that single KB version can definitely knock me out of balance in a way that feels much like your example. I'll put those cues to use.

My PT has me doing these and it has made a HUGE difference in my balance and posture. She also has me throw a ball at the wall and catch it while standing on one leg. After I do those, I stand perpendicular to the wall and twist and throw the ball and catch it while standing on one leg. If you can do this you'll be helping yourself so much!

I so avoid doing of sigle leg deadlifts because my fears for injury since I lose balance easily. Now I understand whey the important. This video is so helpful, the information you gives help people like me understand the science behind every move. Thank you so much for sharing! --

I really like this exercise. Knee issues can make this challenging. My left knee has had meniscus tears twice. Surgery twice. Most recent was a large complex tear a year ago. I have some chronic swelling and arthritis in this knee. Any suggestions?

How is this movement not more like a -Good Morning- rather than a deadlift. I am not diminishing the exercise, it looks like a great move that I will try. It just seems to not incorporate the same muscle groupings as a regular deadlift.

this move will sear your hamstrings so make sure your warm up very well or you will end up with a major case of DOMS making it hard to walk, but it is a great move, to build strength and stability, thanks Corey

Seems like using an elevated step would make it even better since you could get weight passed the feet/floor level. Granted this would not be A good idea till you are comfortable with the movement.

I must be a real oddball, the single leg DL and the regular kettlebell DL are easier for me than the traditional barbell DL. I've never been able to master that thing but the others are no problem.

Isn't one of the big differences between this and the bilateral deadlift that we don't bend our knees from the bottom? Would love to hear why that does or does not matter. Thanks

Shouldn-t you use the single kettlebell when doing the single leg dead lift. What I really meant was I tend to use one heavy kettlebell when doing a single leg deadlift.
