Heres Why Old Volvos Last Forever dannyo66: Regardless of if your vehicle is rear wheel drive or front wheel drive, in winter particularly, have your best tires on the rear. Yes even with a front wheel drive. The owner of the car made a good point about the light end being on the back end. If you have the weight on the front end your traction is better on the front end. Therefore the other end is the light end, that being the rear end. In a low traction situation, its going to lose traction the fastest. So if you only put 2 tires on your vehicle at a time, put them on the rear. In winter you can always throw a couple sand bags in the trunk to aid in traction, but match it with the better tires. To avoid this being an issue, always replace all 4 tires at the same time, and do regular rotations to keep the tread wear even.

Best cars I have ever had (other than my Pinto of Beemers- an older 320i that was MINT in 1999. I had a 71 244 (ski car) in 79-84, a 242GT in 89-91 (should have kept. Drove from Huntington Beach to ALASKA and back SOLO, it never missed a beat) Last, a gorgeous MINT 96 245 wagon, white over blue 5-speed, the best of the lot. NEVER SHOULD HAVE LET THIS ONE GO but I got a company car and didnt need 2. 3 years later, different company, so I got the mint and I mean MINT gold 320i, a real beauty. WAH 4 PERFECT CARS, all manuals. None ever failed me. Ever. Alaska and back dudes and dudettes. Depending on the website, older Volvos are commanding major bux these days. If you can find a private party CA gram-maw Volvo, jump on it. Thank me later.

I had an old 240 Volvo. They were slow and durable as could be. but NOT reliable. And mine only ran well on 89 or greater octane. They would just have problems out of the blue. particularly the fuel system. Also, not a fan of belt driven overhead cam engines. I put 20k miles a year on, and having to replace the belt ever two years became a drag. They were very easy to work on and built well. Logical. They had a charm all their own. But their days have passed. Now I have a Toyota Corolla approaching the same number of miles (250k) but it gets 10 more miles on a gallon and runs well on 87 octane and burns no oil. I can change the oil with only a 15mm wrench and a pan and rag in about 3 minutes.

I owned a 740 GL approximately 20 years ago, and it was a great car. It was reliable, comfortable, simple to work on, and drove very well. Unfortunately it was fitted with an electric overdrive that could be engaged or dis-engaged via a button an the shift lever, and for whatever reason, likely the solenoid, the overdrive ceased working? As a result I sold the car, which, had it not been for the overdrive problem, I would have likely kept for a lot longer? I currently own a 2004 Volvo V50 T5, which is a great car, and which I intend keeping until it expires completely.

When we had kids. I sold my wifes, Tercel. Bought a 240 wagon, for her. One day, she turned in front of a cement truck. Both passenger doors were caved in. Car was up on two wheels. My daughter, was in a car seat, on that side. She was fine. The old tin box Tercel was fun to drive, but. That truck bumper was quite high. The Volvo, still drove straight, after this. Kept it for a few weeks, for the novelty. Then bought her another one. Currently, i have two, manual 97 850awd wagons, with 2. 3 turbos. (locking rear differential in the snow, is a blast)

They last long maybe because theyre developed from the reliable 240 series drivetrain. Wich is basically a 1950s construction. They needed nearly ten years of time until the well engineered 700 series was presented. Except the shitty glovebox and the (coloured) interior plastic parts (red blue green and tan, not black. ) nearly every part is much heavier built than it has to be. Until 1988 its construction was improved (engine, electrical system, rust resistance) and with some minor design changes it was produced until 1998 known as the 940.

As a native Swede: God, I hate old Volvos And yes. I live in Sweden and has done so since I was borned in 1972. And yes. I have driven most modells from 1974 to 2015. A lot. And I hate them. They have rubbish gas milage compared to anything from Germany, France or whatever thats not from US of the era. And the the old back wheel drives has stunningly bad perfomance compared to what kind of horsepower the engines supposed to give. They broke down all the time. They are rubbish. Really, really rubbish. Think Soviet meets the worst years of GM.

I am considering a Volvo XC90 used a couple years old. I am worried the twin engine with super charger and turbo especially used but theres nothing on YouTube on issues. Everyone seems to love their SUV except for the infotainment that can sometimes freeze or restart. I am also looking at Mazda cx-9 but wanted something more luxurious and not spend too much either. 50k CAD max. Other options are MDX or Q7 or X5. I need a 3 row because of size of family. Can you please make a video on those? I would love your opinion.

Every Volvo I have owned have been very reliable and safe cars. I had 3 544 and 1 P1800 when younger. Later in life I had 850T that still had original SS exhaust after more than 100k miles. Only car I bought new and put over 100k miles on it. Only problem I ever had was the ac needed a new evaporator when I sold it. Because of the turbo 5 cylinder engine it was a real sleeper performance car as well, 0-60 in 6 seconds. The body had no rust issues even in northern Illinois weather.

My 1959 544 4 speed transmission w/b16b engine was not reliable. Driveshaft bolt would shear off so I replaced them with large case hardened bolts. Two engines one from a wrecked Volvo first threw a rod and the second just started o rap after a couple of months. Always maintained all my cars. This vehicle and a Datsun pickup truck were he worst vehicles followed by a Dodge Ram Charger. Most of my vehicles exceed 200k with good maintenance.
