The video is good. One but: you should start breaking with a gear engaged, so the engine does part of the work. I almost always downshift during breaking. In an emergency, it is useful to have that control and possibly of maneuvering. It takes some practice though to downshift smoothly. Downshifting from 5th or 4th gear to 2nd is how you are supposed to slow down. Downshifting from 5th to 3rd and adding gas to match RPMs to current speed is when you need rapid acceleration. I am talking about a 1. 4 - 1. 8 l petrol engine.

Pretty good video. One thing Id like to change is to not always park in 1st gear. While you should park in first gear on level ground or with the car pointing uphill, if the car is pointed downhill, park the car in reverse. The reason why is that you can start a manual transmission car by pushing or rolling it. You obviously want to prevent this with a parked car. Having the car in first gear or reverse, depending on what direction the car is pointing, if the car rolls downhill achieves this

Well I never owned a manual transmission car. But when I drove one to try it out I always found it easier to drive a hydraulic version vs a mechanical clutch. I could never get use to a mechanical one. But this was many years ago driving a Acura or Toyota with hydraulic clutch vs a Dodge shadow with a Mechanical version. Could never do it in a Dodge. I don't know how car are now with clutches but in my combo driving I not sure I will get a manual.

Hey Scotty another great video I don't have much money and I'm driving the same old car after all these years, but I certainly enjoy your videos. Do you have any comments about why superchargers tend to fail on the Mini Coopers? I've been through two new supercharger installations already since I bought my Mini about 13 years ago and I don't think I can afford to go through that again. Any suggestions for preventive maintenance? Thanks Scotty

Bought my first manual transmission vehicle about a month ago without having any clue whatsoever how to drive it. It was a bit rough at first, but like the video says once you can get going from a stop into first reliably the rest is pretty easy. I do still struggle a bit with stop and go traffic on a hill, though, and my downshifts aren't exactly smooth, but I know that will all get better with more practice.

My first car was a used '77 Toyota Celica GT LIFTBACK with a 5 speed manual. Got the hang of shifting (especially on inclines from the stopped position) in about two weeks. Eventually had to part with it. However, that 20R engine and the 5 speed were a good set up. Just had to learn the costly and hard way NOT to constantly ride around with your hand laying on top of shifter.

Never press the clutch (change gear) in high water. Doing so will flood the clutch. My late mother told me to operate the clutch and accelerator pedals like a seesaw. When you push one you down you must raise the other and never use your left on the break pedal. Best advice on how to drive a manual I received. Dad taught me the rest.

I have two questions. How do you start the car in 1st gear when you are stopped on a hill in San Francisco? How do you shift and down shift a non-synchro gearbox? Also, I believe it was Fangio who said that when shifting, you should imagine the knob on the shift lever to be an egg. Shift gently, and your gearbox will love you.
