Those dodge dakotas 3. 9 are easy to work on. I have a 97 5 speed 4x4. I paid 1200 for it. It had its issues but I invested less than 400 and my time in it. The ball joints had been replaced before I bought it. It is common for the crankshaft sensor or camshaft sensor to go out. Replace with Mopar sensors. Great buy for me, I'm a chef for a living and a hillbilly mechanic for fun lol. The previous owner spray painted the whole truck. Im in the process of removing the flat green spray paint off a decent black factory paint. If you do buy it expect to work on it by doing a full tune up by replacing worn out things with new stuff. To me id rather buy a used truck and slowly make it like new with just one part at a time hahaha I love Scotty but I wish he knew hiw easy its been to work on and cheep. I think I lucked out for the most part due to the bad paint job amd tbis guys wife probably told him to sell the truck or else she'd leave him hahaha

Reading some of the comments on Dakotas, wondering how hard current or past owners are driving them. My first Dak was 1993 Sport, 4x2, 3. 9 with the 5 speed. Only issue I had with that one was it ate a timing chain at 98k miles, but, I have to admit, I drove the hell out of it ('Like a maniac', as Scotty would say. Currently, I've got a 2001 Dakota SLT, 4x2, 4. 7, 45RFE transmission, 9. 25 open diff with 3. 55 gears, with 141k miles and it drives/runs like the day I bought it. Granted, I no longer drive 'like a maniac' and I am meticulous with the maintenance (none of that 10k mile oil change BS; 6000 max, but after reading some comments on here I can't help but feel that I also lucked out. One thing know for sure, that old 3. 9 was a dog. It was underpowered as it was, then they went and put it in that 2nd Gen body that was even heavier; just exacerbated the problem.

new ball joints are not a deal breaker for an old truck. all old vehicles need stuff like that and most people could do them if they put their minds to it. scotty has this attitude that all old cars should be junked if they need new ball joints because the parts and time are too expensive relative to the value of the vehicle. all old vehicles need repairs eventually though and jumping from one old car to another anytime something needs a repair like ball joints is complete chaos. if you can find used parts cheap and do the work yourself on a saturday afternoon you should keep the vehicle. if you can buy it cheap because it needs ball joints and the motor and tranny run smooth then buy it and fix it.

Scotty is right about the 2nd gen Dakota. They eat ball joints. I'm replacing one each year on mine. 92, 000 miles on mine and the intake gasket went out and lost most of my coolant, idler pulley, fan clutch, pilot bearing, belt tensioner went out. Had a rack and pinion go bad too. I'm losing some oil somewhere. But other than that the engine doesn't get gunked up if you are using a good synthetic oil, mine looked spotless when they had the intake off. The manual transmission is very strong too. I like my 3. 9, but I don't tow with it. But listen to Scotty because in the 17 years I had my truck I basically bought it twice with all the money I put in it.

Hey Scotty a 2000 Dodge Dakota with the 3. 9 V6 and 5 speed was my first 'nice' vehicle I ever owned back in 2003 when I got her. To this day the second biggest piece of junk I've ever owned Hydrolic Clutch leaked, only way to fix was to drop the tranny Rear diff was squeeling like a banshi at 50mph, the computer went out, the speed sensor went out, the wiper motor went out, and the plastic inside was so poorly made it would break with normal use That's what I can remember from that, oh she also got the worst MPG of any truck I've ever owned except the F-250 4x4 I had for a few years, 12 to 14mpg You are right STAY AWAY from that thing

So funny. My Dad had a Chrysler 1985? it had the talking feature. the deluxe 24 message package. I remember the magazines hated it. but I really love this male voice PLEASE Fasten your Seatbelt (it did not sound like a asking Please more a demand I felt. I just liked it, so different. When it got older it we would hear it talking to itself in the garage. going through all those messages. Maybe that is why I talk to myself so often. got the habit from the car - I think I even argue with myself when trying to decide something.

I'll say it again. flooding in the Midwest, corn production is falling off a cliff. USDA is currently saying 3 million fewer acres planted and per acre production down by 10 bushels per acre. Record low production and it is not yet clear how much more damage will occur if rain/heat or early frosts occur. Watch food prices zoom. On the other hand, we're better off than China which has severe flooding _and_ an Army Worm infestation that is out of control.

With those keyless ignition systems the worst part is that people have died by not turning the car off and then the house and garage fills with carbon monoxide. Imagine leaving a car on for 8 to 12 hours and the next day you open your door to your garage? All that carbon monoxide is going to go into the house and you won't be able to smell it unless you got that alarm plugged in.

SCOTTY I have a 2010 Chevrolet Silverado. Is it possible, for myself, to deactivate the tire pressure monitor? One of my tire pressure sensor (in the valve stem) is defective and, they want to charge me an arm to replace it. Mind you, I check my tire pressure every month. The warning light, on my dashboard annoys me. Thank you very much and, red line that 455 Stage 1. Richard
