Why Nikita Dragun Is Under Fire, John Bolton Resigns, College Athlete Compensation, & WSP Day Team Slay CPTSD: People who want to gatekeep and police hairstyles or malign kids who innocently, with zero malice, sing along to their favorite rap music, without any nuance or appreciation for intentions and awareness, and without any parallel conversations about reparations for the actual thefts that occured via slavery, etc, are either racists themselves, or else they are too ignorant to have the REAL conversations we SHOULD be having about how society should go about paying its debts to black America and First Nations tribes and communities for the actual theft (of labor) and actual exploitation and abuse. Two hundred fifty years of slavery. Ninety years of Jim Crow. Sixty years of separate but equal. And that's just for black US-America. The list goes on for how US-America mistreated First Nations, too, and the violations of treaties, massacre, war crimes, etc. Until we reckon with our compounding moral debts, America will never be whole. And yes, I recounted the wisdom of Ta-Nehisi Coates in loosely paraphrasing/quoting him. As a side note, I will add that, of course I am on #TeamNikita on this issue. Although I barely know who she is and couldn't care less, 1) SHE IS CLEARLY OPERATING WITH THE GOOD FAITH INTENTIONS OF AN ALLY AND 2) DREAD LOCKS ARE UNIVERSALLY A PART OF HUMAN HISTORY ACROSS ALL RACES AND CULTURES AND ALTHOUGH SHE (NIKITA) CITES INSPO FROM BLACK WOMEN, IT IS A FACT THAT DREADS ARE NOT THE SOLE PROVINCE OF BLACK PEOPLE. So let's just think about maybe moving away from culture-appreciation-shaming and cultural-exchange-policing and actually make reparations as well as repairs to the current and longstanding injustices in the world. Rather than utterly nitpicking and witch-hunting things done either with clear wokeness and allyship and pure, or innocent intentions.

13: 30 I completely agree. It took me a long time before I finally got the courage to seek outside help because I was told that I wasnt normal for not being able to handle life on my own. It was seen as lesser or strange or wrong to go seek therapy. A lot of my family dont believe in mental illness in general and think its pseudoscience, and those who do believe its just taking some pills and magically youre better. But let me say as a psychology major, it is most certainly not just a magic pill. Theres no quick fix, no miracle elixir that can solve it, nor is it unnecessary. Therapy has helped me tremendously when I finally decided that I wasnt weak or different for needing to get it. Just having somebody to unload all your worries, anxieties, and stress on is absolutely critical and super important for anybody, even if you dont struggle with mental illness. Its being able to talk about things with an outside party without having to worry about their own bias or judgement. They can look at your situations from an outsiders perspective and give you constructive advice on how to handle them, or at least work with you until you can manage them. That alone is enough for me, even though I do struggle with my share of inner demons. Dont ever let anyone tell you that therapy and professional help for mental illness is a joke and not worth it. You are worth it, and you deserve some help dealing with things that you cant handle alone. Nobody can handle life alone and whoever says they can is straight up lying to you. Everybody has their vices, but let yours be a healthy one. Seek professional help, not permanent or life threatening alternatives. You are worth so much more than you think.

The very idea of cultural appropriation is ridiculous. It is predicated on the idea that the only reason someone would emulate another is to show dominance or power over them. It ignores the very idea you could appreciate something another person is doing and want to copy it because it is something you admire about them. It assumes that it isnt possible for (white people and westerners) to actually admire anyone of another culture. Copying traits, styles, actions, and behaviors of others is such a normal and healthy thing to do. We are social creatures. You cant be social and together if you forcefully separate ways of being into boxes that only allow specific people to behave in that manner. If we want to be inclusive and harmonious, we have to integrate into our lives as much of the behaviors of others as we can, while still maintaining some individuality. Not only should we not be offended when someone admires us, but it makes no sense. Imitation is the highest form of flattery. Why would you be offended by someone wanting to be more like you? That is them admitting there is something about you that is better than something about them, so much so, that it is worth it for them to change that thing about themselves to be more like you. How is that offensive?

I live in Africa. I think it's cool for everyone to try out something from another culture as long as you don't mock or disrespect the culture. That's how you push culture forward, by integrating new practices that you see from others. I have no problem with this, because this is how EVERY culture in history has progressed. I have a bunch of White friends with dreadlocks. Do you know how they usually get treated in Africa? just like other black guys with dreadlocks. Cultures are like treasures that get better when you share them with someone who's not from your culture. It lets you connect to people that you may have never spoken too just because they like something about your culture or you like theirs. We have to give people space to make mistakes so that they can learn more.

Well, the point of university is to learn. Sports are a side gig. Its great that we have scholar athletes not just athletes, especially at elite schools. Having a scholarship is already a big deal and saves a ton of money. People say these athletes are starving, but what about the people who didn't get anything at all? I think that's the bigger issue here. That plays into the idea that it makes it worse for the entire NCAA. People aren't going to be looking for degrees, they're just gonna push for sports, when it's a darn university where people are going there to study. Dont get me wrong. I'm an athlete too, and I also know many that study hard and play hard. When people are incentived to just grind the game, what's the point of studying or going to university at all?

The only reason large organizations have issues with players making money is it ultimately hurts their bottom line and has literally nothing to do with serving the best interests of the player. The NCAA and college Athletics programs couldn't give 2 shits about the student athletes as long as they kept making millions of them. It's kind of like modern day slavery. Student athletes do all the work while the college's staff and NCAA reap the monetary rewards and the student athletes receive nothing. Free housing? Slaves got that too. Free food? Slaves got that too. Free education? Some slaves got that too. Doing all the work and never getting a dime for it while those over them got rich? Slavery and college sports both have the same thing happening.

I'm a little behind (obviously, but I just now watched this. I don't know if you'll even see this, but Phil? Thank you SO much for your brief few seconds of openness. Suicide needs to be talked about. Suicidal thoughts need to be normalized. So many people have these thoughts, and that's okay. It is not weakness, but it need to be talked about. I am in Behavioral Health in the Army, and there is still a major stigma that we fight against every day. I also am a part of LivingWorks and a trainer of ASIST. Yes, I do get paid, but I absolutely love the work we do there in suicide first aid, and it's helped me so much in helping others. You are special, you are important, and I love you all

Cultural Appropriation at this level is insane. We live in a nation which thrives on cultural diversity and the mixing of cultures. What is so wrong with somebody liking what you do? I've never really understand this. People adopt practices of other cultures all the time such as halloween, Christmas, foreign haircuts. Everything we have has come from our diversity yet some people want to make sure some cant enjoy that. Look i get it you had a horrible past and it was completely horrible. Slavery is not cool and neither is racism, but we arent making any progress if anything somebody does thing remotely having to do with black and they arent is cause for rioting and backlash.

I'm half black and half white. I don't mind if people who aren't black decide to wear braids or dreads. I personally don't think these styles look that good on people who have a smoother hair type, but it's really not that deep. I also appreciate the fact that Nikita brought up the issue with black women being told their braids or dreads are considered unprofessional and being told to change their hairstyles. I'm a bit cynical and think she only brought the issue up to keep the keyboard warriors at bay rather than it being a legitimate reason she wore the wig, but I'm more than happy to have someone bringing more attention to it regardless.

If you drink beer and dare to eat sausages (my precious Bratwurst) i will let the heavens smite you, because beer and Bratwurst are my cultureI think cultural appropriation is complete BS. If i see a hairstyle i like and i wanna wear, who are they to forbid me to do so? It's not fking theft. You go ahead and wear a Dirndl if you want, i don't care, why would i? In my eyes you don't need to credit me or my nation for that, just because you wanna wear something you like. I think this falls under Freedom of expression, to express yourself the way you want and people tell you that you can't because of cultural appropriation.
