Why Don\'t People Duel Anymore Documentary RagingGoblin: Deaths and mutilating injuries were more common with swords than with pistols. At the very least early on. Duels with sabres, in particular, often resulted in incredibly dangerous injuries and participants would often bleed out or even just die from shock.
Most duels with pistols, on the other hand, resulted in less dangerous and -- very frequently -- no injuries whatsoever. And even those injuries inflicted tended to be moderate on average. The penetration of early pistols just wasn't there -- not to mention bullet technology.
With pistols, especially in the heat of the moment (and with only one shot, people tend to miss. But with blades, even a complete baffoon can swing it. He'll likely get his arm cut off for it, but that still proves the point.

The answer is liberalism. Now I'm not making a comment on whether dueling is a good or bad thing, whether there are othe rreasons to oppose it or whether in an alternate reality there would be another reason it stopped, but in the one we live in, people became liberalised, started believing the system could regulate itself without any sacrifice on the part of the people and we moved to lawsuits as a more comfy way of settling disputes.
Now pistol/sword duels to the death have always been more of an upper class thing, let me tell you duels using fists, also known as fights, are still pretty common among the working class in many countries.

With respect to America, I think the feminization of society has a hand in it. As evidence, I will submit that it is a felony in at least one state that I know of to fight - to fist fight - in school. The state sees fit to give you the opportunity to accrue a criminal record before reaching the age of 18, and makes no distinction between the aggressor and defender. Presumably, you can obtain criminal status for defending yourself from a bully. There are unfeminized subcultures in America that still see killing as a perfectly reasonable response to being slighted.
Make it make sense.

This explains why duels have become less popular. The reason why two concenting adults can't engage in a duel is a bit different: As civilization advances, goverments are becoming more posessive of the citizen as more methods of mass controll are in the hands of the goverments. Goverment protects you even against your will because it claims to own your life instead of you.

simple answer:
Because than at least 50% of the hole population would be killed pretty much right away. Especially nowadays with all the toxic scum all around.
Now that I think about it: we should bring that back. Would help with alooooooot of problems. Lack of respect and behavior, overpopulation. actually I could continue this list for hours.

Funny thing is, in Germany and Austria we still have a form of duel between some fraternity students. Not to the death or with lethal weapons, but going so far as for one student to be able to challenge another directly. Or for one fraternity to challenge another fraternity and a selection of fencers to face each other

I imagine it could also be abused.
Person A pays (or convinces otherwise) person B to insult person C. If person C takes the duel- they might die (if you hire a good dueler or do it multiple times- eventually they die. If they don't- they will be seen as a wimp. Either way it's good outcome for person A.

Please please stop showing Ireland as being part of Britain. It is not now nor never was part of Britain. In loads of your videos you have made the same mistake. It is like saying New Zealand is part of Australia. THEY ARE DIFFERENT ISLANDS!

Actually by the 1800s dueling was already illegal in EU and UK it just had public support. This is partly why most duels were fought in the country at the crack of dawn so there would be few witnesses.
reply

Because it would be fair. Since then, the cowards realized it's much easier to use their penis extensions to kill unarmed people who don't even have a chance to defend themselves

duel historically occured mostly between aristocrats. at some point it became crazy and this would be a great danger to the survival of the elite thus it was forbidden
reply

What's ironic is that modern plebs would probably rather be caught in a duel than a lawsuit. At least I'd have a fighting chance, especially up against big money.
reply

Dueling should still exist. Being a mouthy punk is a lot less appealing when you can be legally killed for it, or have your reputation ruined by refusing the duel.

Id rather some dude wearing a curly wig and knee high socks think that I'm a coward than get shot and have to go to an 18th century hospital. But that's just me.

Watching this with subtitles is a whole other experience. I didn't learn a whole lot about duelling, but I am now an expert on jeweling, jailing and Zhu Ling.
reply

Yeah today it's a mostly honor free society even though all the politicians are called Honorable so and so when they actually NEED shooting. many MANY times
reply

Lawsuits Or, y'know, fisticuffs. Much less lethal, and with structured bloodsports rulesets available to keep the fighters from outright killing eachother.
reply

Unsurpringly, in Germany you are still allowed to use physical force against someone who insults your honour. You can escalate until he/she stops.
