What happened to Rhodesia? Documentary Rory: One man one vote once. Rhodesia didn't survive it actually flourished because it wasn't part of the international banking system. It had no inflation and a 100% employment. It's army was 80% black volunteers. If you want an opinion on a country especially a historical one maybe having lived there would have given you a more balanced perspective. History is never written honestly especially in the case of Rhodesia by the so called Victor's. Rhodesians never lost the war militarily they were let down by their so called friends. South Africa stabbed us in the back to gain a few extra years of real apartheid. Personally I see it as a loss to the whole planet. Left to our own devices Rhodesia would now have had a fully integrated society. A shinning example of a society working together for all. The idea was to educate the population so they could vote with confidence. It takes time to educate and increase living standards. It can't be done over night. The British and Americans were happy to see Zimbabwe run by an incompetent dictator. They couldn't have a country not doing what it was told. You can think whatever you want but the truth is you've been reading to much Liberal lefty history books. Unless you were born and brought up there and fought in that war you have only here say. I'm not ranting I'm just explaining how it is. The past is the past. I just wish history was written in an honest and balanced way. When I visited the UK in the 1970's I was shocked at how racist the average British person was. As a child I never met a racist and as an adult I only ever met a few. You failed also to mention that the British government had war planes in Zambia with the intention of invading. They were talked out of it by the military as we were described by one British general as the best fighting force in the world at the time and the size of the force required to do the job was impractical and the number of casualties made it a bad idea. I realise you can't possibly know the full truth about a country like Rhodesia, maybe it's better not to write these historical videos if you really don't know the reality.

But why did Rhodesia object to universal suffrage? That's the question everyone neglects to address. Zambia and Mozambique are prime examples of the thought process. In most of Sub-Saharan Africa when given universal suffrage the political parties that developed broke down along tribal lines and elections resulted in contested results that led to civil striff and war. Rhodesia wanted to avoid this by ensuring that the right to vote was gradually rolled out first to those most well educated (hence a wealth based class system) and then the rest of the population as the transitional society stabilized. On top of that you had communist factions indoctrinating the poorer members of the populace with critical theory and attempting to exert influence among the most vulnerable members of Rhodesian society. Rhodesian schools were integrated, Rhodesian society by and large was integrated, the Selous Scouts were integrated, the Rhodesian African Rifles were an elite all black unit, in the later years of the war the RLI became integrated. Rhodesia was not the Jim Crow South or Aparthied South Africa, it's got a bad rap from ideologically driven historians and those who would seek to exploit the nation for their own political benefit. It doesn't help when White supremacist assholes wear her flag and promote the popular narrative, looking at you Dylan Roof.

Its important to note that the attitudes of the white peoples of Southern Africa were that most of the black population wasnt indigenous to Southern Africa but came from central Africa after white colonisation. - because white people made civilisation there from out of the bush.
civilisation requires people and also provides plenty of food and work especially when it is run by white people.
Also most of the Rhodesian military was manned by black soldiers.
There were segregated units but also mixed ones like the elite Selous Scouts.
Its tragic because the actual indigenous Africans in these areas have been marginalised and whole tribes genocided by the ruling blacks in power.
Same is happening with the white farming population in SA and the Khoisan being butchered by Bantus.
But the UN just thinks all black people are the same.

Of course it was run by a minority whites government. Who else in the neighborhood was competent and capable to have run the place? Same thing in South Africa. Both of them have descended into complete disarray (a very kind term) based on local majority one man one vote rule. Harold Wilson could screw anything up. After all he was a labour (AKA socialist) party Prime Minister. He sent the United Kingdom into a decline into hell from which it would only be partially saved by the incredible ability of Margaret Thatcher. He did the same thing relative to Rhodesia and other parts of Africa the Brits had colonized and to which they brought civilization. Ask someone what the inflation rate is on a Zimbabwean dollar.

Today there there's millions of Zimbabweans here in SA. Some here legally and so many illegally. Mugabe's rise to power is quite astonishing because he was a relatively unknown figure up to 1980 and was a school teacher. Up to 20 years ago Zim was one of 8 net food exporters in the world and the lead exporter of tobacco but they since they chased white people people off their farms and to SA they really shot themselves in the foot.

Mugabe destroyed Zimbabwe! Look at it now. A lot of Zimbabweans are saying life was better when it was Rhodesia. I'm not supporting segregation or keeping people down, neither am I supporting White Privilege, but Ian Smith could have done things different. You need an inclusive government where everyone has a say. Why are so many African countries so poor and corrupt? The leaders exploit their own people.

While ancient Rhodesia was a major exporter of agricultural products, 80% of the food needed today is imported. The brutal eviction of white farmers - Appaling crimes even on white Children- and their staff by the arsonist gangs activated by the Mugabe regime led to the displacement and misery of tens of thousands of agricultural workers.

No one thought of establishing a country for the white Africans and another one for the black Africans? It would have avoided the ridiculous Bush War and spared the world the complete and total economic disaster that is Zimbabwe under the brutal Mugabe regime where those who weren't killed or tortured, starved to death.
reply

Love it. You use todays concept of making everything strictly racist to explain the actions of people you know nothing about. Ian Smith had a good plan and good intentions. If you think he wanted white rule because he was a racist, well you suck and need more education lad.
reply

This what happens Africa is garbage civil wars that consist of kids in 19 and 0 superbowl shirts that will rule to be killed by somewhere asshole with the same and other crap with shit ak 47s they just kill each other UK leaving was the worst thing to happen to Africa
reply

Say what you want about Smith but he kept the lights on
It's like when you're abusive but hard-working father moves out and gets replaced by your drunken reckless mother yeah technically an improvement but now there's nothing to eat

reply

I wonder how many of those who fought against Rhodesia privately thought later that it would have been better if they had just let Ian Smith and his people keep running things.
It's so much easier to destroy than to build.

reply

Rhodesia was a Prosperous Nation with farms, cattle, Gold and Diamond mines.
After Mugabe took over he turned it into a poverty-stricken shithole. Period.
But him and his family lived very well while Zimbabwe starved.

reply

What happened? The western world decided that an economically stable, vibrant, well educated bread basket nation should be turned over to a bunch of barely literate communist thugs. That's what happened.
reply

What a fascinating piece of history, I sure do hope that the comments aren't filled with white supremacists and apartheid nostalgics pining for the days when their tiny minority controlled the country.
reply

What i don't understand. In the Rhodesia coat of arm there Is the Bird of Zimbabwe on the helmet. It's a local artifact made by people that was despiced by White rulers. So why they used It?
reply

Left out the part where the black majority killed all the whites, then starved all of the blacks and stole 1/3rd of the GDP causing inflation to grow to the largest amount of all time. Bad try
reply

the british will always stab you in the back, even their own. lack of ethnocentrism is a common bad trait of the anglo, as great as they are that is their downfall and why england is finished.
reply

Other than Northern Africa all African countries have failed economically after decolonization because of communism and constant corruption from their own black African leaders.
reply

You forgot to add And immediately started committing genocide after the Mugabe election. Not that was anything new for him, since that's what civilian deaths were during the war.
