10 Worst JUMPSCARES in Non-Horror Games Paul: I still say to this day that the biggest jump scare I've had in a game is from Fable 2.
You get to these hidden areas (it's been a while since I played so details are hazy) where you go thru a portal and end up in a valley with a lone mansion in front of you. You go in, get a chest, and everything's fine. I think there were 10 or 12 total in that game.
Well at the 5th or 6th one, you walk up like normal but as you approach the walkway, the screen flashes, a scream happens, and the mansion now looks like it went up in flames days earlier.
Gat dang, did this cause me to jump while sitting.
Eff you Molyneux.

A couple notable ones for me were the ghosts in multiple Pokemon games that just appear out of nowhere. I remember those spooking me pretty good when I was younger. Also this wasn't really a jump scare, but in Fallout 76 I was walking through the Mire area for the first time and it was night in game, I had the music and radio both turned off in game and that area is spooky by default so I was already a little unnerved, but I didn't expect a Flatwoods Monster (basically an alien) to suddenly start attacking me from behind. Scared the shit out of me especially since I hadn't seen that enemy before and was like what the f is that?

Otacon's elevator jumpscare in MGS1 legitimately traumatized me, I was a real scaredy-cat when I was a kid, and I was maybe 8-9 years old watching my older brother play, the buildup of tension, not to mention the overall creepy vibe the control towers give off, and the eventual realization that there are a handful of invisible bad dudes doing the sneak on the elevator you're riding on, but Otacon's codec portrait zooming RIGHT IN while he screams WATCH OUT SNAKE! In your face.
I'm 32 years old now and even thinking about it still sends a chill through my spine. It actually did Traumatize me.

Reaper Leviathans in Subnautica - despite playing it many times I still hate being around them. The one specific I still remember is like that: I was going in PRAWN on the border of Kelp Forest and Crash Zone during night (and roars of reapers could be heard already. At one moment, I accidentaly got out of PRAWN (pressed the wrong button) and swimmed forward for a second. Almost immediately, I heard the roar of reaper. LOUD. which would mean it's very close. I totally panicked and the only thought was: where is PRAWN. I got in it and ran as fast as I could from there

I got ambushed by some wolves at night in Oblivion. Killed them but I ran out of torch and potions. Weakened and not being able to see. I saw a red light coming over the hill in the distance. I didn't know what this creature was, but I knew I was pretty beat up, and accepted my fate. So I prepped for a fight as the red light got closer and closer. I soon realized it was a torch I saw, but I couldn't tell who was holding due to it being dark and rainy. Next thing I hear. By Azura, By Azura, By Azura! It's the Grand Champion!

Speaking of crocodiles, the biggest (non scripted) jump scare I ever had was in Far Cry 3, where I was just standing by a river minding m own business and a croc lunged out at me. Didn't see it coming at all. Later, I got attacked by another croc in a tight underwater passage without noticing it in time. I've been jittery near water in Far Cry ever since.

More jump-startle than scare is the Marlboros on the Island Closest to Heaven in Final Fantasy VIII. You trigger a random battle and then it arrives with that Hah! That doesn't happen in any other encounter. It only surprises you the first-time, but I think it counts.

#1 for me is in The Burning Crusade. The Fel Reaver. You'd be playing along and then you hear that noise and you don't even have to see it, you just know to drop whatever you're doing and run for your life. Still traumatized to this day when I watch a Bellular video.

Technically not a horror game I freaked out the first time Man Bat in Arkham Knight, shocked the shell out of me after I left the Riddler s hideout and grappled to the first building. When my nephew played this section I made a effort not to tell him about it.

As someone who grew up watching horror and playing horror games and is pretty much immune to jump scares the Batman Arkham Knight Manbat jumpscare got me. That s the only time a video game has ever made me jump. Such a well timed scene.

I remember getting jumpscared by a random enemy that followed me for a while in Morrowind. Was walking around minding my own business but when I turned around a small monster enemy was there hitting me making me almost dropping my controller.

I would of used the Bioshock infinite Burial at sea 1. Where you look into a film and it says don't look behind you or something that. You are there thinking. It's nothing, surely. But it is something and it's so creepy

The haunted house in Far Cry 6 spooked me pretty bad, because it was so unexpected. :D The haunted house in 5 was mostly just funny. The one in 6 was actually startling at points and the atmosphere was actually spooky.

one of my worst jump scares is skyrim VR. i was using mods that made it darker and another mod that made the bears really big. so walking in the dark and this huge dark shape came at me. nearly fell over from it.

Although a pretty forgettable game, the beginning of Rage 1 when you exit the spaceship and out of nowhere get jumped by a mutant, I played the game numerous times and every time it got me jumping out of my seat.

That Bioshock Infinite jumpscare still gives me the chills just like the first time I played it. I took the voxophone, pulled the lever then quickly turned around. And the bootleg sirenhead enemy is behind me

You have no idea how much I love #8. That's when ND stared playing with foreground and camera movements and really started doing cinematic angles in gameplay for me. UC3 would take that approach further.
