10 Abandoned Things That Are MAKING A COMEBACK LanceUppercut4: 1) It must just come down to biology, because I've tested my laptop hooked up to my 4K TV, and couldn't tell (WHILE PLAYING, not pixel peeping) any difference between native 4K and letting the TV upscale 1080p. And, at least for certain genres, I don't see a big difference in FPS - I couldn't get Hogwarts Legacy running at 60 (at the visuals I wanted, but my laptop screen is 144hz, so 36 & 48 are divisors of that (& I have Riva to custom frame limit. I tried 48 (which I stuck with, but even 36 didn't look/feel bad to me. (So 30 probably would have been fine, too.
2) Only if it's difficulty option based hard games, not mandatory! Lol. I play for escapism, not challenge, so I'm not loving this trend.
3) In recent years I've found that linear games are probably my favorite, despite thinking it was open world for a while. My favorite indivual few games are OW, but as I played ones that were good but not my favorite, I found I was growing weary of the bloat, and my favorite parts of my favorite OW games were the stories, so a linear game has that without the unnecessary parts. It seems more rare that a developer can finesse what is just filler/a chore into a game (& know the right amount) and have it not dip in it's fun. (Even if it's just luck - Spider-Man had way too much of that, IMO, but I still enjoyed it because web swinging and slinging is just enjoyable in itself. Miles Morales felt like it got the balance better though, so didn't mind it was a shelter experience.

The return of super difficult games is something I m honestly not about. I don t have vary good reflexes or hand/eye coordonation, and I no longer have the free time and patience I once kad as a kid, to dedicate myself to a game, and git gud. I also don t like it when games are constantly showering me with tutorials for arbitrary new mechanics, or are generally just trying to hold my hand throughout the whole game. I vary much the simplistic approach where a game gives me a quick rundown of what s going on and what I m doing, gives me a brief explanation and a small area to figure out any abilities or game mechanics I may come across, points me in the general direction of where I should maybe be headed next, and than sends me on my merry way to figure stuff out for myself. This is something BOTW did beautifully IMO, and I'd say that even TOTK, didn't pull this off as well. BOTW also found a great balance of difficulty IMO, where it kicked my ass with the first few enemy encounters, but the challange didn't feel insurmountable to me, and Lynel and early guardian encounters aside, I never felt like I was being brutaly punished by my lack of skill (the game generally gives you the tools and resources you need to compensate for a lack of skill, in other ways.
I was super interested in Bloodborne, but having attempted to play it for a few hours, I can t seem to get to grips with the combat mechanics, and I felt like I made basicly no progress, so it was a case of a difficulty that is too punishing for me to ever be able to ever make meaningful progress and enjoy the game, which is a shame because the world seems sper intriguing, and I d love to actually be able to explore it. Sekiro is another game I d be super interested in playing, if it weren t for the difficulty.

Oooo! Are we getting more NFTs and quick-time events? The world can't freaking wait! Oooo, and escort quests with bad AI! We need more of that too. Perhaps we can get more ports from console with ridiculous controls? PC controls are difficult. They've changed so much since Halflife. Oh, and we can't forget microtransactions! We gotta have more of them; everyone demands them. OMFG! FISHING! Are we getting more games with fishing? So freakin hope so. Like, hopefully, Night of the Dead gets rid of the zombies and just focuses on fishing. That game needed fishing as ALL games do. What about third-party accounts and DRM software that runs constantly in the background whether you're playing the game or not. It's good that these software packages call home with personal data even when we aren't playing. Luckily, no one seems to understand what thrashing is in computer science. Can we also get more extraneous BS content at the expense of mechanics? We'd much more rather get movies, bowling, and other mini-games than a better overall game experience. Oh. how about some terrible camera controls? This concept has been out since. video games started, but we can still find new and inventive ways to screw this up. Bonus points also for taking control from the player, especially when the player could take damage. We need more of that too.

In terms of framerate, having experienced older pc games and earlier current gen games at 60 fps, it s really hard to go back to 30 fps. If the newest games insist on being limited to 30 fps at 4k, than they should add a performance mode that brings the render resolution down to 1080p and the fps to 60, while maintaining all the other graphics settings the same where possible, and than either use FSR to bring the render resolution back to 4k, or just have the output resolution stay at 1080p. Alot of people still don t have 4k displays anyway (such as myself, so not having the option to sacrifice some of that resolution I can t take advantage of, in order to make the overall experience smoother, is kind of annoying, especially when the current gen consoles specificly promised 4k, and 60 fps. With that in mind, if we can't have both, we should atleast be allowed the choice between one and the other.
In the case of starfield, I understand the choice to go for 4k 30fps, but I do hope we get the option for 1080p 60fps, atleast on series X (with the series S maybe getting a performance mode with a lower internal resolution, to try and reach that 60 fps target)

the problem is most people play consoles on big tvs instead of smaller mobitors and the console companies because of this made4k the standard which theoretically makes sense and to me is still the better way to play the consoles but if oyu have a really nice 2k monitor that supports hdmi 2. 1 you could play these games at a higher frame rate and since you would be playing on a smaller screen at a lower resolution you would literally never tell the difference. When the ps5 launched i bought a new 1440p 27 monitor as my main on pc and a 28 4k monitor as my secondary but the main for my ps5 and it was in essence a waste cause now 3 years later i have purchased a 2nd 1440p monitor as my main and my old one is now my secondary monitor for my pc and thats it. These consoles are good and games actually are much better optimized for them. But on pc you have more powerful systems that can do more but the problem for developers is that there are too many variations of a pc that they have to try to account for which is not fair and leads to all the unoptimized games we have on pc today

The console war thing was huge with the 360 and ps3, the next Gen stopped it cold when Xbox stumbled out of the gate and got left behind by the ps4. Now as someone that s 40, so I ve been gaming a long time, I hate to see the exclusivity that will now be part of our gaming future but I m not surprised Microsoft went this route. On the bright side it s not like it was in the 90s where most games weren t on both consoles. As a wrestling game fan from the 90s it was brutal needing two consoles because the games weren t on both. But I still hate to see it.
Also, demos are awesome. It s such a great way to sell a game. My friend and I in high school played the Tony Hawk demo endlessly and when one of us finally got the game it was like a double Christmas. Great times.

For 30 fps only game mode for, its not that simple as downscaled resolution and texture and parameters, and you re good to go. Some elements are only CPU or GPU limited, and even the new consoles re not GPU high end as or 4090 or CPU high end.
Plus choices has to be made at beginning of developpment considering frame_rate, if you have 1 gen for consoles, and multiple gen for GPU and CPU, its difficult to make a choice considerind an eventual tech to come. As for Starfield xhich is in dev for ten years at least, they ve played security not knowing what next gen console will be at the start of dev and structure of dev. Its not so simple for large games for which are on dev on a 7/10 years period on the console side.

Anyone believing any AAA game will run smooth 60 FPS at 4k resolution on consoles is delusional. And the moment they promised 60 FPS on the PS5 i knew that it would never hold up. Even in 1080P alot of AAA games that are graphicaly beautifull/realistic will struggle to reach 60FPS on consoles.
It is just a non starter. For the retail price 500 USD you could never make a profitable console that delivers on a promise of 60fps4k or even 60fps at 1080P.
and i agree on the 1440p 60fps benchmark. Eventough iam a PC gamer and dont mind spending the extra buck for more performance. I rather hit atleast 60fps on 1440p than having to dial down settings to be able to get 60fps on 2160p. Specialy with raytracing.

I seriously can't understand what gameranx have against FFXVI. They keep shitting at the game at every chance. It looks like they didn't get a review copy, so they are just throwing mud at it. Very unprofessional to the point they also misinform the viewers. The game had a 60 fps mode with the option to switch to a higher fidelity 30fps mode (like 99% of the games out there, that nobody ever complained about. I was a long time fan, always for their before you buy, before I indeeed bought a game. But I had such a different experience than what they warned me for, that I am simply gonna unsub and not follow them anymore. The gaming journalism has become all about who pays more.

6: 55 Xenoblade 3, the big finale to the Experiment Trilogy that was 12 years in the making, was announced in February 2022 in a clearly near-finished state, slated to release in SEPTEMBER of the same year, and then was bumped forward AND RELEASED IN JULY.
And then while initially announcing that the DLC waves would end with the story DLC expansion in December of 2023 (which seemed really far off, bc it was) we ended up getting it in APRIL.
Nobody does it quite like Monolith Soft.
And on top of it all they've maintained a very anti-crunch culture over the years, which is very uncommon with Japanese devs. They're legends.

The human eye cannot detect anything over 55 fps that is why they set the standard for televisions at 60fps games were originally designed for the television screens and this was the same for home consoles, PC's and arcade games. As the technology improved, the screens could handle higher frame rates and pixel counts. The technology has improved, but the human eye has stayed the same, so 60fps is still the minimum required for smooth footage regardless of the screen or graphics capabilities. If a game can not be played at 60fps, the developers and coders are basically incompetent and should find a different form of employment.

i knew every corner of the JediKnight Mysteries of the Sith demo. i never completed the full version doe, kinda weird when i think about how i loved the demo.
The best thing that make a comeback are FPS-RTS hybrids (my top no. 1 game of all time to this day is Hidden&Dangerous2. Hybrids never took off but now there are a few and more comming, i also really like are style shooters like FEAR, but they are very nieche and also didnt took off at the time.
i wish they would improve A. I. and get rid of this DRM and microT crap

For difficult games, I can't really agree
Aside from Souls games I can't really think of a game that made me struggle and learn just to get it done.
Maybe Cyber Shadow from a while back. But most modern games considered hard; I couldn't put on the same tier as something like NES Ninja Gaiden, Ghouls n Ghosts, or heck even just one of the NES Megaman titles.
I'm definitely for less hand holdy titles. Difficulty still feels non-existent currently.

My favorite part of the console wars [Sony vs Microsoft]is that growing up I was always a Nintendo player. We sit on the side lines and go ok cool guys but our system does crazy stuff and has some of the best I. P. s. What Nintendo lacks in graphics and power they make up for in Nintendo's own I. P.. Plus they were always cheaper so more money to buy more games. Play what you like and let others do the same. Everyone wins when they have fun with their own systems.

30 FPS is about to be the new normal on console, for the rest of this generation, guys. Sorry. Even more than 60 FPS, console gamers have gotten used to their games looking closer to PC versions than they did in previous generations.
As the consoles age, they have a harder time keeping up with the latest PC hardware. They have to sacrifice either detail or frame rate. Most developers will choose to sacrifice frame rate.

Starfield complex? It s no mans sky style generated planets for resources only. This reminds me of how the media overhyped mass effect andromeda.
Have we not learned from redfall? The old dev are gone peeps. Bethesda is a wild card now. I m still hurt on redfall. Especially after hearing the devs wanting it cancelled by Microsoft. Show they didn t want to make it and was forced by zenimax

I've always preferred linear games over open world. Most open world games require way too much time and commitment. The older I get, the harder it becomes to carve out time to play games. Especially as someone with a bit of OCD. I feel like I have to do everything and usually get burnt out midway. I So for me, I prefer a really strong linear experience (e. g, GoWR) over open world games.

As someone whose use to playing games at 30 fps i really don't mind games being 30fps i often cap my frames to 20 to avoid frame drops when i can, sure if its only one or two you're not really gonna notice but when its five frame or more you're dropping at a time its a real pain so id rather play at a low frame rate with no frame drops then a high frame rate that drops randomly

The 30 fps is such an exaggeration! Lol! A tale 2 receives a patch every PS exclusives have a 60 fps mode the outer worlds spacers choice edition was a disaster at launch now is super smooth at least on ps5 Resident evil 4 they are so numerous that it baffles me how is this a point at all! for just a couple of games we are not gonna pretend that indeed 60 is the standard

The console wars died down a bit but then all the PC nerds were ganging up on the console people. I don't know how many times I've heard someone say why are you wasting money on a console just pay for a PC and future proof yourself. Meanwhile I've also heard PC players saying that the size of games and system requirements for games are getting really ridiculous.
