LGR - Audio-Technica ATH-ADG1X Headset Review

Pretty much the only complaints I have about my game zero headset, is related to the mechanism that lets it fold flat(which the open-back game one doesn't even have. Guess they're expecting you're less likely to take an open headset with you in public, so it doesn't need a feature designed solely to make it lie flat. While the mechanism for folding it Is perfectly fine, it has two plastic covers over the hinges held on with 2 screws each. I find these come loose due to the twisting force periodically.
Nothing breaks, it's the screws that come loose, but it does mean you could lose the screws or covers, because you won't realise this happening unless you really pay attention.
A xecond minor complaint comes from a combination of having braided fabric cables combined with a velcro strap to keep the cables together when it's stored.
The velcro can get caught on the cable, pulling the fabric and making it fluffy, ruining the look and feel of parts of the cable.
A minor point, but frustrating when such cables are mostly about style.
Other than that, it's better than this in nearly every way.
Audio response is good, even without a dedicated headphone amp. It's loud, doesn't distort unless your audio source does (but can be sensitive to noise on crappy audio equipment. Can be a shock how bad a lot of equipment actually is.
The cables are detachable, and can be replaced for relatively low cost. It comes with two, a longer one with seperate headphone and microphone jacks, and a shorter one with a single combined jack (like mobile devices tend to use, the volume control is on one of the earcuffs, and is a rotary flat knob style control, and works great (and volume is consistent with the position it's set to, no mute button, but it mutes automatically if you fold the microphone up.
Plus, for all that it's cheaper than this thing too. (and that's for the folding close backed game zero model. The open-back game one is even less.
Also comes in two styles, white with metallic red accent, which looks quite scifi, but maybe a bit overly flashy, and a more subdued black model with I believe dark blue accents. Not as stylish, IMO, but draws less attention.
Very comfortable too, as long as you don't try and use them in bed. XD
Obviously I can't hear a thing nor hold a conversation wearing mine, but that's a known thing for closed vs open-backed headphones.

I bought a set of these since I needed a mic and my original ATH-AD700 headphones were starting to fall apart after 6 or so years of daily usage. Here are some things I'll point out as to why I kept with the same concept headphone, but with a mic:
- Though the headset may feel cheap to some, due to weight and flexibility, that is all by design. This is, by far, the most comfortable over the headset I've used. When you don't notice the weight of the headset after gaming for a few hours, you know Audio Technica did something right.
- Mic and headphone quality are above average vs pure audio headphone and high quality microphones. However, you don't feel like you are necessarily -missing- something when listening to music or even making a quick audio recording.
- The earpads are not pleather/letherette. IMHO, they are so much more comfortable and feel less gross since sweat won't make them suction to your face.
- In-line VC and mic mute is a non-issue (though the review's VC is definitely defective, most are going to have volume knobs/buttons/rollers on their mechanical-rbg-macro key laden keyboads. Also, I don't know of a team voice platform that doesn't allow for muting via macro. I like shift + - (just in case you are trying to press 1 for a weapon and get too excited, you don't suddenly go dark to your team. I use the mute rocker only after I'm done using the mic, kind of like an on/off switch.
- My ATH-AD700 headphones took over 6 years of major abuse. The ATH-ADG1X build quality is even better.
- Open ear headphones are a necessity in my house. The nice part is that the drivers will continue to break in over time and sound better the more you use them.
Needless to say, I'm happy with mine. I was able to get them for sub $200, which is a fair price for this headset IMO. It may not be for everyone, but I don't see anything beating it for the money for my needs.

I might be biased because I make videos, but my advice is to just not get a headset at all. The microphone will be sub-par while at the same time probably meaning the sound quality won't be as good as headphones of the same price to maintain the price point.
Get yourself a pair of quality headphones (Avoid ones with marketing blurbs like 'Gaming' or 'By Dre' that just drive up the price for literally no good reason) and buy a desktop microphone. I use ATH M50s and a Snowball, which work better and allow me to talk to people on games -and- do videos or voice over that don't sound like total crap, for LESS than you'd pay for this, even if you get the new ATH M50x model with the detachable cable.

I would just get a pair of Philips SHP9500 for about $60, and a V-MODA BoomPro Gaming, VoIP Headset Mic for $30, and or a Mod Mic, and you have the best budget open gaming headset out there I think. dedicated gaming headsets are just not worth it in my honest opinion, as I always find headphones with a removable cable to be a better value as you can add which ever mic you want, and usually for less money, and better quality(not talking about cheap Chinese crap. Edit: to note if you get the Philips SHP9500 you will need a soundcard that can amp them, or an external amp to get the full sound of them.

For about 10? years I've used the open Sennheiser HD598 headphones. (Bought my 2nd pair recently as my old ones finally gave up) - It's the perfect headphone for everything. I'm at the computer 14+ hours every day. I wear glasses and they've always been excellent and super comfortable. 2 weeks ago I came across the Antlion Modmic! It's basically a really high quality microphone, which can be attached to almost any headset. It sits perfectly on my open Sennheiser headphones and man, keeping your old, comfortable headset, but being able to attach a really nice mic is just the best thing ever!

You were right about the mute and volume inline control. Terrible quality. I just leave it at 90% volume and master control it through my Sennheiser GSX1000 headphone amp, or for a changeup, I use my Mayflower ARC. I like variety and options too.

Ah yes, premium luxury goods. I can't say it enough that my cheapy Logitech headset I got from a Wal-Mart store for just $35 has been proven to have better sound quality than headsets costing five times that within my circle of online buddies. Its got good sound quality both input and output, and I have personally worn them for 12-14 hours without issue. The model I have is the H390 USB which seems to also get billed as the ClearChat as well.

They price is not entirely ridiculous for what you get. The mic is the best one available in any consumer headset, although not by a great margin. The high price mostly comes from the audiophile headphones they're based on. The sound is the main thing. They do let you down in some superficial aspects, which is a shame, but as usual those surface aspects are arguably much more important to 5-minute reviewers than actual power users.

Thank you for the honest review! I have a pair of closed-back TBs hooked to my desktop I got cheap, but I was looking into other options now that I have kiddos running around and need to hear when they're actively destroying things.
These were entirely out of price range, but it gives me an idea of what to look for - though at this point, I may just pair a Blue mic with my bog-standard PortaPros.

Also, that's a dealbreaker for me because I specifically want my headphones to block out sound so I don't have to hear my wife nagging me about how much I play.
