The overture's alifetime, but the showis short
Here with all your familyand friends
You run the race
You blurt your lines
They put your face
On shirts and shrines
And giant signs a thousand feet tall
And don't stop dancing
Don't stop dancing
Til the curtain call
Shows are a never ending life, of course
A silhouette that stays when you are gone
What use is the struggle and the strife, old horse?
End it and your legacy lives on
The chatter stops
The crowd departs
A needle drops
The music starts
A song you taught me when I was small

Coupla things. In the Good Old Summertime was a remake of the non-musical The Shop Around the Corner (1940). The original lyrics to Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas had a bit that was so dark that Judy asked for the bit to be rewritten, on the grounds that she couldn't sing something so dark to that sweet little girl.

Regarding over the rainbow, I heard the other story that an MGM executive said it should be cut from the movie because you cant have an MGM star singing in a barnyard. That just wasnt done.
Thats the backstory that I have always heard regarding cutting over the rainbow from Wizard of Oz.

I wonder why in listen darling Zing went the strings of my heart has a different lyric to it in the movie Judy sings I knew I loved you heaps and you were mine for keeps instead of dear with your lips to mine oh Rhapsody divine

Honestly Ive no idea which number I love the most. love them all. But I think The Boy Next Door/ Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas. She was both absolutely stunning and her voice was like melted chocolate.
reply

I don't really like her singing or speaking voice a whole lot but, boy, she can sing. And the songs just don't sound right unless she's the one singing them. Absolute talent. RIP Judy
reply

Friendly Star from Summer Stock is one of my favorite of hers. I think it's that tear in her eye at the end of the song that makes the song so great.
reply

Love the film made about her life: Life With Judy: me and My Shadows with Tammy Blanchard and the new Judy film. Love the Judy Garland show as well.
reply

Waaaaaay too much narration in this one. Sorry, but Judy's far more enticing than the hostess. Zip it a bit, so we can hear more of these songs.

I suppose that you could easily do a top fifty best numbers, even including a number that did unfortunately get cut from Oz, The Jitterbug.

Why didn't you guys include I got Rhythm from Girl Crazy in the list? That song is always on repeat in my music playlists!

I Could Go On Singing, the title number of the film by the same name deserves an honorable mention. at the very least.
reply

I loved her in Harvey Girls and her singing the Atcheson, Topeka and the Santa Fe. I read she did that in one take!

Great gongs, greatest singer, but why mess it up with all that dialog? Would prefer all songs, no yakking.
