These non-Disney animated movies totally deserved an Oscar. Our countdown includes Wolfwalkers, Klaus, The Prince of Egypt, and more! Which non-Disney animated movie do YOU think deserved an Oscar?

I consider the wolf movie more about the irrational fear & hatree towards actual wolves and an anti poaching/hujting movie, a movie about valuing nature rather than destroying it. Why do we have to assume everything is a metaphor about prejudice against foreigners especially considering its a Celtic tale. Soul sucks and the only reason it won is because it was a black character movie( so it didnt stand a chance against a pro nature white Celtic movie ) just like Brokeback Mountain losing to Crash as Race representation trumps gay representation, which is messed up as Brokeback was by far much better & culturally significant. Today a movie doesn't even have to be good just make it about race & it wins awards. Also Mojo often ignores movies from the 70s 80sc & 90s which had great animated movies but they didnt center around race/prejudice though so I guess they dont count.

Agreed that the race in 2014 should have gone to literally any movie other than Big Hero 6, including the three mentioned here. I give the edge to HTTYD2 over the other two, though. You said it yourself that it was arguably the best entry in one of the greatest animated trilogies ever made. BH6 was enjoyable, but also unremarkable and predictable, proving the Academy never actually watches the animated movies to decide which is best. The other most glaring award mistake was also mentioned, with the completely unnecessary and heavily disappointing Toy Story 4 inexplicably winning over the gorgeous and original Klaus. HTTYD3 was also more deserving than TS4, but as soon as I saw Klaus I conceded it was even better and deserved the Oscar.

Coraline is one of my favorite animated movies period! I'll give Up credit where credit is due, the first 5-10 minutes of the film was a MASTERPIECE, Story telling at it's best! Everything afterwards was okay, but just couldn't hold up to it's strong beginning. Coraline was amazing from beginning, to middle, to end. And in my opinion the superior of the two movies.
Side note When the Lego movie came out, I was working on a cruise ship in Hawaii, The song, Everything is Awesome immediately became our work theme song, and my co-workers and I would sing it while we were working very often! Brings back great memories.

Johnny: [in a creepy voice] They're coming to get you, Barbara!
Barbara: Stop it! You're ignorant!
Johnny: They're coming for you, Barbara!
Barbara: Stop it! You're acting like a child!
Johnny: They're coming for you!
[points to the cemetery zombie]
Johnny: Look, there comes one of them now!
Barbara: He'll hear you!

1982 I wish would have had Animated Movie Oscars because two of my favorite animated movies of all time cane out in 1982 and both The Last Unicorn & Secret of NIMH are worthy of Oscars. Secret of NIMH should have also won best original song for Flying Dreams. These are two of the best most underrated & overlooked Oscar worthy animated films of all time.
reply

Other Oscar worthy animated films that you didn't mention but deserve love from the Academy:
Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
Sausage Party
Princess Mononoke
South Park: Bigger Longer & Uncut
The Land Before Time
Akira
Transformers the movie (1980s)
Cloudy with a chance of meatballs
Beavis and Butthead do America

I'm just gonna say this. Wolfwalkers should have won over Soul. I didn't hate Soul, but in terms of storytelling and animation, Wolfwalkers was top notch. This list proves to show that Disney and Pixar are not the only studio to create masterpieces year-round. It's not just preference, but what is more deserved and appreciated.
reply

Wolfwalkers shouldve won over the highly overrated Soul. Wolfwalkers is way better than most of the recent Pixar films that came out lately! Disney-Pixar baits the Oscars in animated categories! Also Anastasia and Shrek 2 shouldve won an Oscar, even How to train your dragon 3 was nominated and lost to Disney-Pixars Toy Story 4!
reply

Ok if anyone hasn't notice that for me I have imagined that two movies where sponsored by two game's but mostly a taco brand or boat or something
Wolfwalkers is sponsored by Jackbox game's Quiplash 3: 0: 50
Kubo and the two strings is sponsored by Use Your Word's but mostly a taco brand or something: 1: 54

The fact that so many incredible animated films weren't even considered for Best Picture before getting their own category at the Oscars is beyond my comprehension. Anyone who had the idea of animation as an afterthought was just close-minded and ignorant to the incredible talent put into these films.
reply

I Love Disney And Pixar Movies But Even Other Animated Movie Studios Companies Deserve To Win An Oscar Award Such As DreamWorks, Illumination, Sony Pictures Animation, Warner Bros Animation, Paramount Animation, 20th Centry Fox Studios Animation, Blue Skys Animation Studios, Laika, And Etc.
reply

I'd give Kubo an Oscar for its visuals
Iron Giant was very good, Prince of Egypt was fantastic.
All 3 How to Train Your Dragon movies deserve all the Oscars - all 3 movies are amazing.
Yea, the Lego movie was definitely a surprise

reply

as much as I love Disney movies there's nothing wrong with at least giving other movies an Oscar at least once in a while becuz these movies r worth checking out. Kubo and 2 strings is my favorite movie along with coraline and persepolis.
reply

Like, it's hillarious how animation is inherently the most visually striking genre, and an average animated film has better cinematography than most Best Picture winners. But the Oscars are an award for actors to celebrate themselves,
reply

Long video in short
10. WolfWalkers
9. Kubo and the two strings
8. Iron Giant
7. Coraline
6. Klaus
5. The prince of Egypt
4. How to train your dragon 2
3. Song of the sea
2. Persepolls
1. The Lego movie

reply

I can understand why secret of kells didn't win an Oscar because of some of the character designs looking similar to racist cariactures, but song of the sea, the breadwinner and wolfwalkers are all definitely oscar worthy.
reply

Kubo and the two strings, The Iron Giant, Coraline, The Prince of Egypt, How to Train Your Dragon 2, The Lego Movie & The Princes and the Frog DEFINETLY deserve to win Oscars. Its not fair that these movies didnt.
reply

I'm more surprised you didn't include Kung fu Panda or Kung fu Panda 2.
Fact: the first Kung fu Panda film was nominated for an academy award and Golden Globe award but lost both awards to Wall-E!

reply

I still think Frozen 2 should have been nominated for best animated movie and it should have won that award plus it should have the Oscar for best song for that smash hit song Into the Unknown
reply

Another one that is incredible (I don't know if it has an Oscar or not) is breadwinner. It's on Netflix if anyone is interested and it's a heartwrenching story that is simply brilliant.
reply

I love WolfWalkers I am so sad this movie was overlooked in 2020 it should have won best cinematography or animation and I am still mad Persepolis still did not win an Oscar
reply

Disney dominates Best Animated Feature at the Oscars, which makes it unfair for other animation studios #msmojo #watchmojo #animatedfilms #animatedmovies #oscars #academyawards
reply

You forgot Ninjago, where the main character is forced to defeat his father. No, I don't think I agree with your lists. C'mon at least that movie deserved to be in this video
reply

Now that i'm 18, i think it was a very bad idea of watching Coraline, At 12 pm, Alone, At Home.
And a movie that deserve an Oscar is a french animated movie called Kirikou

reply

Corpse Bride should have won 2006 Oscar Nominations, Wallace & Grommit was boring I was not a fan if it as well. Corpse Bride was the best animated film of 2005
reply

Prince of Egypt is not only in my top fave animated movies but the soundtrack is everything! I liked Song of the Sea but felt it was a little overhyped.
reply

Saw a few comments mentioning A Silent Voice and I'm here for it! Definitely a film I will never forget and relate to so well! Very well written!
reply

I can't count how many times animation companies like cartoon saloon, laika etc. ended up losing to disney and pixar.
reply

Very clever You said western animated movies so You did not have to talk about Akira and my neighbor Totoro. Well played Watchmojo
