KOKANEE Salmon & Lake TROUT with a side of CLIFF JUMPING Bluegabe style - Chet: I lived there for twenty years and know James Herrara who was in the boat with you, the salmon are not Coho, Kokanee are landlocked Red/Sockeye Salmon, delicious, it looked like you were fishing the cliffs across from Squaw Hollow, that's one of the better spots for spawning Kokanee. If you ever have the chance try Kokanee that have been smoked, Heavenly. Squaw Hollow boat ramp was my favored jumping off point, I launched there many times fishing for Macks, Kokanee and Rainbows, I do miss the Gorge.

The male Kokanee wasn-t the best because it was a Fire Engine, lol! That-s what we call them here in Alaska. When they are red like that they have used/depleted their fat reserves and their body starts to break down and burn the proteins. The flesh of the Salmon that are red is usually a much lighter color. Only keep the bright or silver Salmon and your taste buds will thank you-. Great vid per usual-

That is a much different version of salmon fishing than I am used to. Are they landlocked in a lake? Here in the PNW we go salmon fishing in small coastal streams only a few feet deep in many parts with some deep holes as the salmon return from the ocean. They are much much bigger and it-s a whole different style of fishing. Chinook and coho. Wonder if they taste anything like the lake salmon.

Blue do you think the skin would taste like bacon like sockeye salmon? Try it by scoring and adding olive oil and salt next time but you have to pan fry it to get results which means keeping skin on and scoring 3 quarters deep. Then adding salt, pepper, olive oil and thyme.

Who else would you mess with? Trip of a lifetime. Never been out that way. Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, NewYork, Geordia, Florida West Virginia, Virginia. that's about it for me an I haven't fished in all those places, alot but not all.

Its cool you got to catch youre 1st Salmon but I don't understand why the guy you were fishing with had you keep the spawned out fish there not the greatest for table fair. If the kokes are chrome, bright then there tastey. Also those looked alot like sockeye not coho.

We have Kokanee over here on the WarmSprings reservation. They are way smaller but taste just as good. They are born and raised in one of our most nutritious rivers. You should come to the PNW for king salmon fishing we get the nice size salmon

When salmon turn red they are not really good fir eating anymore. If there are enough if them in the spawning grounds for future fishing. Then grind up the red ones and fertilize your gardens. Great for the soil.
