In this episode of Field Trips: West Coast, I'm back in La Jolla for a 2nd day kayak fishing with Kevin Nakada from Hobie. Since I knocked yellowtail off my bucket list last episode, we'll be targeting one of the most bizarre fish I've ever seen: California sheephead. Watch until the end for a preview at episode 3!

In 1972 when I was in the Navy, we would guard San Clement Island, and catch a ton of Sheepheads, and Catalina Blues, and reef sharks. The abalone drivers would trade us their lobster and abalone, for FRESH WATER and Bologna Sandwiches. Also come on board at night to watch movies. We caught HUGE garbage can(s) full of Sheepheads. Our Filipino cooks would take the extras home, we actually got tired of eating lobster and abalone. Who would'a thunk it. LOL.

The best tasting Sheepheads are under 12 to 15 pounds. Steam them, then flake their meat with cooked Lobster meat, then refrigerate for about 4 hours. You can use a 3 or 4 to one ratio of Fish to Lobster, and hardly anyone can tell the difference in taste! Everything tastes like Lobster!
(You're fishing in My Neck of the Woods, now! 30 years of fishing around there. Haha!

Ive watched all of your field trips vlogs and they are the best man! So you guys were using frozen shrimp the whole time, or did you switch it up for the bigger one? Also I noticed you didnt pull your mirage drive up coming through the surf. No concerns with it breaking when doing that? Thanks!

You took that music from one of those Trump commercials for old men with low Testosterone.
But seriously all jokes aside you need to pick the music in the video not use the songs the software comes with.

This is my favorite to fish for theses are actually pretty tricky to catch you had a awesome day if you where polling them up like that last one I caught was 17 pounds

At the aquarium I volunteer at, we have sheephead, though our male didn't get anywhere near as large as that! Then again, he hasn't fully transitioned yet.

Never seen a fish like that and if i were to catch one, I don't think I would eat it. I would want to keep it as an exotic pet or some shit like that.

Actually Robert, there are a few fish that are hermaphrodite. You see it in the tropical fish trade, the Pea Puffer is one that comes to mind.
