There is no human need to have visible abdominal muscles. This is a fetish. No culture that lives in nature requires its members to have wrought-iron stomach armor (-six-pack abadabadoos-. Only in the west is this bizarre cult alive. If a surgeon ever had to cut you open, it's HARD work getting through all that gut steak. Please consider your ego.

I am going to reintroduce some ab crunches this way. Thanks. So the point is, we are lowering the stress and compression on the lower spine, as well as adhering to the other precautions and movement instructions(head and neck neutral) you mention. My guess is not to overdo this, say 8 to 10 slow reps and that's it?

Hi! I've tried crunches. But I have cervical issues due to which my neck immediately starts paining if I do this. And I start feeling nauseous too, the moment I try lifting my head off the floor. Is there a modification for crunches that I could try? Would appreciate hearing from you. :)

You sure you should be mixing up muscle size with muscle strength?
Most people are mostly concerned with size OR strength so your advice should be for one at a time not flitting between the two in the same sentence.

What do you think about doing crunches on a slightly compliant surface, e. g. a firm mattress? Feels better that way for me. Activating the hamstrings to take the hip flexors out also seems like an important cue.

Plank is useless, try lying on your back, legs up and bend the knees, this start /finish, pull the knees to the chin. if the plank is as good as you all say, this will be a doddle.

I thought the main reason crunches can cause lower back pain is because of hip flexor engagement that can result in strained psoas muscles that attach to lower spine.

I appreciate the advice on doing crunches, but the best part of the video was watching those two Bichons battling each other at the end.
