The Best Scan Tool in the World and Why You Dont Need It Steve Cobratei: Hi Scotty my name is Steve, I am an auto tech and have been for a long time. Even though I have become disabled my love for getting grease under my fingernails hasnt stopped me from working in my garage on my own cars (2 classic, 2 GM special edition vehicles and 2 daily drives. LOL, plus I still have a handful of loyal customers that I fix their cars for them at my home to help them by saving them a lot of money over the local repair shops and making sure they have a car to get to work(even if it mean getting done at 1am Monday morning. Yep, had to do that a few times)No matter how long you work on cars you never seem to learn everything and I love watching your videos because I do learn new things now and then and reminds me of old tricks that I forgot about. A good scan tool would be a greatly welcomed piece of equipment if I were to win. Thanks again for all the time you put into making these videos for all of us. Please dont stop any time soon. A fellow gearhead, Steve

Thanks for the video Scotty. Agree with you completely. I have a snap on modis, Solus, autel maxisys eltite, every all j2534 software you can obtain. Including vag tools, micropod, Honda tools. I have not come across a job a dealer could compete that I couldnt. But there is very limited support. A lot of times I have to sift through bugs and odd connections to get software to operate as intended. So far I havent run into problems. I would like to get my hands on what high end domestic dealers are using to compare with how I carry out diag and programming. I would bet in some ways theirs is better, and in some ways mine is.

Thanks for the advice. So far Ive gotten by with the internal self-diagnostics on some of my vehicles (my 93 Saturn and 1990 Voyager - turn the key 3 times or whatever, it flashed out the codes on the dash and I looked on the internet to try to understand what they mean. Failing that I have borrowed a scan tool. I havent had enough issues with our newer vehicles to even check whether they have self-diagnostics. If they do, that greatly decreases the need for a scan tool. Are you seeing that vehicles still have self-diagnostics these days?

I agree with Scotty on the price point vs. functionality. You have to look at it from, how many times am I going to pay someone to look at something and what would I save if I have my own, then can I buy the tool(s) with that savings. I bought the Launch 431 Diagon IV and did the repairs myself with the savings of not going to a mechanic (who now charge in the area of 125+/hr.

I just bought one of the tools of Amazon that was recommended in a previous video. I kinda wish that I saw this video first as this one does the same and more. Oh well, there is always something newer. Wonder if there is a way to pin a list on the channel or recommendations for different things that could be updated as new stuff comes out.

Hi Scotty, thank you for all your informative videos and helpful tips. My 1995 Toyota Camry V6 auto transmission does not shift to overdrive. I already tested the overdrive switch OK, and installed new engine temperature control sensor. How can I use this scan tool to diagnose this no overdrive problem?

I have been viewing your videos for a while now and I would highly value your input just so I know what to say to the mechanic when I take my car in. 1998 Toyo Avalon. Its a great car. 1990 GMC 1500 Sierra a great truck. but I need rear Cab mounts restored. Any Ideas?

Appreciate the crazy stuff you come up with (below 0. 3vt dc in engine coolant and the like. Your ideas are usually beyond the basics, interesting if youve had grease under your finger nails and gas on your inside forearm. Keep up the good works - thanks.
