philipdefranco I work in telecommunications, there is a huge vast area in rural america as well in not having access or adequate wifi. There are companies that are putting millions to expand their reach but some areas are hard to lay wires or fiber to get proper service. And with Congress in 2014 adding broadband to the rural electrification act of 1935, they made it a utility. Therefore companies should be held accountable for not even attempting to reach out into these areas. I also feel under the no child left behind act that expanded technology into these suburban areas as well as rural areas maybe that could help push the agenda for expanding internet service. I listen to parents everyday call for faster, better internet. Or to just get some at all. There are rural areas still on party phone lines because their area is so neglected! We are in 2020 and people still are on party lines. that means their neighbors can answer their phone calls. and people dont like unlocking their phone for a friend? Internet providers need to be held accountable for not at least trying to branch out. Kids need learning and internet is the future.

I'm a public school teacher in rural Arkansas. We offered virtual learning to all of our students and very few wanted to accept. Most of our students wanted to be in classes physically. We have actually gained new students during this pandemic. Wifi is a MAJOR issue in our area. Even if we have out hotspots, some of our students do even get cell service. We have converted our parking lots to drive up wifi spots and are trying to place more of these in our consolidated communities too. We are facing a lot of push back from internet companies themselves. It's sad, but this is not an isolated case.

Full support for Charlie Hebdo. Have you seen what happened to #JesuisMila? France is supposedly a democratic secular country, yet you have to fear for your life if you dare say something against islam. Heck there was a terrorist attack in my own city and people refused to participate in the minute of silence held nation wide afterwards. We are going down a dark path.
Edit; To make myself clear, this is not against people who peacefully live out their religion but you d have to be blind (or never been in france) to not see the dangerous rise of extremism.

There isn't any concrete, justifiable reason to print those cartoons and they know it. They're stirring the pot for whatever reason. There are so many more important causes to publish about and bring attention to. Actual horrible social injustices happening but they choose to stir up Islamophobia once again. They know that some Muslims will lash back and that will make headlines. If they want to honor journalistic freedom then write about the injustices happening in countries that suffer media censorship. It is always more difficult to unite than divide.

Regarding the last story. I m in my 30s, full time nursing student, white Texan, with a small child at home. I had a 5 year old computer that wasn t compatible with programs I needed to use for school. After all the expenses of books, scrubs, supplies, and fees, I was 2 weeks behind before I could afford a new 185 laptop. Everywhere also seems to be sold out unless you want to pay 800- 1, 700 for one. This is a good chance to make the adjustments to bridge the gap a bit. I m glad schools and organizations are stepping up.

the internet access isn't just a US issue I'm from the UK and when both my girls were at school we couldn't afford internet and the school gave us so much grief as the girls homework had to be completed online. Even though my husband was gong through cancer for the fourth time so couldn't work and i had to have spinal surgery the school were no help. In the end we managed to get internet with support from my parents in law. Once we were both back at work we were able to cover all bills again.

I had a student who was passed from household to household so he could have internet and a safe place from the pandemic. His mother couldn t help him with schoolwork because she doesn t understand computers well either. We set up a meeting to go over as much as we could with her online and it didn t help much you can only learn so much in one lesson and it s hard to retain information when you re working 2 jobs and moving every few weeks.

Charlie Hebdo is notorious for printing hate cartoons just for the purpose of outraging people and gaining popularity from it. there are numerous examples already of them directing hate at several minorities.
And also recreating any imagery of Prophet Muhammad is considered highly disrespectful and making atrocious ones goes way out line. It's funny how they say modern society like they think that Muslims are not part of it.
