What I didn't like in the game of the time is more of early 90s, late 2000s and not specifically a 2000s trend. I even think it died pretty quickly as far as I know. But the thing was:
Fixed camera locations. And active camera switching, based on your character's position. Like in the Lord of the Rings games of the time. Or the Legacy of Kain series (Soul Reaver and latter.
One moment you are holding W to move your character in one direction, in the next moment the camera switches with one that's 180 deg off and your character starts running in the opposite direction, switching the camera again. But you reacted to the initial camera change, albeit late, and now your character continues running in the wrong direction for a bit. It was really annoying.
But yeah. I don't know if it was even a trend to begin with.

The hate for number 9 makes no sense.
I kinda get the Generic part as yes they do look all samey but complaining about the hair cut is just nitpicky at best.
Half of the military themed protagonists are bald make sense BECAUSE you're playing as a dude that works for a military, they are supposed to cut their hair.
Max Payne's defense for cutting his hair is meant to be extremely symbolic as it's his way of moving on from his tragic past and sam fisher was in prison. They are not gonna like let someone roam around with cool hair cuts.
and The comparison to Japanese designs is just ironic as they are far worse than your western counter parts since their character design only shares one design with one hair cut based on their stereotype.

What I hated the most isn't even mentioned. dev controlled multiplayer servers and the horrible management and cheating that happened and still happens because of it. Old games like Battlefield 2 had community controlled servers and if cheated there you were pretty much very quickly banned harder than on any dev controlled multiplayer servers. Why. server admins communicated among each other so word spread quickly and blacklists got made that pretty much banned the cheater within a week on every ranked server and probably 90% of the unranked servers as well. The community didn't need rootkits and all that crap the community kept itself in check faster and more reliable than any commercial solution EVER could have.

I can't stand Steam for pretty much singlehandedly bringing about the end of game ownership. 20 years ago, if I bought a game, I had a physical object that I could use to reinstall it whenever I wanted or sell it to fund the purchase of the next game. Today, even if we go to a store and grab a box off the shelf, all it contains is directions to download the game off Steam. No resale or trade-in value, yet we have to listen to publishers today whine about how games are too cheap.

The craziest thing about the horse armor is that it was really meant to just be a test for the delivery of digital content via download. But then a ton of people bought it and that gave the rest of the video game industry all the ideas that we now despise.
edit: also of note is that the term microtransaction used to refer to transactions of under one dollar. That is where the 'micro' came in. But these days they are about as micro as NASCAR is stock.

So I think a factor that exaggerates #9 is that, to some extent, all bald white dudes look the same to some people.
I’m a generic bald white dude myself, and I swear I’ve been told I look like a ton of famous bald white dudes. Jason Statham, Donald Cerrone, Bruce Willis, Vin Deisel, Billy Corgan, Cael Sanderson, and Joe Lauzon. None of those people look remotely the same; and I definitely don’t look like any of them either

16: 05 For some reason Yeah, the reason was, because you couldn't buy the exact amount, you'd have to buy more points than you needed. Then you'd buy what you want, and you'd have points left over, which, psychologically, would make you want to buy something else to use up those points. Except of course the number of leftover points wouldn't cover another purchase, so you'd have to buy more, and the cycle repeats.

I remember my brother had just gotten an xbox 360. I didn't know about its features at the time. He was at school one day, and I hopped on it to see what it was about. I didn't know what auto-save was and just thought I'd dick around, and it would revert to his save file when I turned it off. He got home and fired it up and was PISSED I progressed way past his last save, and he missed it all and had to replay it

The super short cropped hair thing will always make sense in a military context. Even in time periods when people today expect long hair and beards like the US Civil War, most soldiers would cut it short for hygiene purposes and for the practical effect of it not getting in the way or being used by the enemy in battle. (the people with giant beards we all think of were basically sergeants and officers)

I still hate boss fights with a passion. They started off a something that was the goal’ of a platform game and then just permeated into everything. They are especially egregious when you’re playing a game that is about tactics and cunning and suddenly you’re forced out of that into something which requires you to have the finger dexterity of a finger ninja!

How can you leave off Exclusive Franchise licenses! EA killed some amazing sports franchises and they did that with exclusive licenses. Maybe this has been mentioned. I haven't read through all the comments. This absolutely killed sports games and innovation in sports games franchises. I love sports games but haven't bought one in years. This would rank #1 on my list.

Soo many of my opinions are forged in this era. I hate boring white military dude protags. I hate lack of color(and too much colour. I loved the sixaxis control and ps4 mastared it, too bad 3rd party developers never utilized it. Also i never considered demon's soul as a success, always thought it was niche and disliked until dark souls popularized it.

Now imagine you stopped gaming in the early 2000’s. For no particular reason you just took a break and didn’t come back until 2020. Imagine buying the latest Tekken and when you beat arcade mode and- nothing happens Where’s my reward of unlocking a new character I have to pay for them! HOW MUCH! For every damn one of them! Those bastards!

Call me old but i liked game looking de saturated as a deliberate stylistic and artistic choice. It's what made those Realistic games look distinct.
Now I hate how every games now days trying to be the next Fortnite and slap as much color as humanly possible.
I mean if Dragon age Veilguard is any much bigger evidence of this issue.

I will forever defend the tac'd on multiplayer modes because we got some of the best multiplayer experiences from those games. Uncharted had a fantastic multiplayer and Transformers War for Cybertron was some of the best gaming I've had in my life and I will never forget Mass Effect 3s multiplayer horde mode, it was so damn good.

Steam as a game store is super great. Steam as a game launcher is still very bad and still annoying. We should be able to play our owned game without the need of a launcher. This is why GoG is a superior platform despite having fewer available game on its store. Still hate Steam to not let us fully own the game we bought

Gamers hating generic characters Yeah nah I call BS on that, in the 2000's we didn't care what the protagonist looked like it was the game play that was important. No one, and I mean no one, looked at the protagonist and thought that the look of the character detracted from the experience. That is very much a modern take.

10: 10 i was like this for Sooooo long, but i flipped 180 and am now a huge fan.
edit: 19: 26 Yep did then as i do now, dlc i highly dislike.
Dlc now is just updates or unlocks that used be free or already in game.
DLC used to be big expansion packs which was worth the small or even more expensive price.

7: 47 Weirdest example I'd ever seen to heal was in The Getaway on PS2, you had to move your character next to a wall and they would lean against it to heal. I'm sure damage wasn't a health bar and was measured by changes to your character like limping and bloodstains. Great game, can't believe its 23 years old

The Sands of Time was such a good revival that it literally created Assassin's Creed.
Also. in the 2000's most of my games I didn't buy. they came with my computer, motherboards, video cards, cpu's. they included games, like. good games. I remember one GPU had 5 games including Thief 2 and Deus Ex.
