With just one single overripe banana, you can make individual-sized portions of banana bread mug cake in minutes, which looks, feels, and tastes virtually identical to the real thing. And, if you more than one banana you can also do the fancy br l e topping, which will make people forget you cooked their dessert in the microwave. pschroeter1: You say 'the texture will be closer to pudding like it's a bad thing. I remember the Galloping Gourmet very well. I used to have a joke he would be preparing something and put a pound of butter in it and then tell us how good it tasted. Towards the end I remember he also tried to prepare healthier recipes, but I don't think that went over very well.

I've got a cheap butane chef torch that takes about a minute to do a Creme Brulee top. But I also have an actual propane torch that takes about 15 seconds! And the latter self-starts with the pull of a trigger, which the small one does as well, but the hotter torch leads to a better experience. So Chef, the algorithm has been fed, and I am going to ask my wife if I can make this dish (she makes banana bread, but claims she hates bananas - and only buys them when my grown son is home or I specifically request them, so hmm) This looks so good, though, that I am going to make it anyway, even if I have to eat both helpings!

im all for saving money, but I think when you have a can of compressed highly flammable fuel making a very hot flame and possibly extended periods of use its worth paying a bit more, after all its not disposable, you just refill it with butane. to his credit tho ive never seen worse butane torches than the michelin star restaurant I worked at; the tops were always coming off and leaking and inconsistent but creme brulee came out just the same (most of the time, I just like not having to say a quick prayer before I use a torch

I haven't heard the name galloping gourmet in years, so I had to stop and goggle Graham Kerr and was surprised to find him living in Washington with a new mission. I always sift the flour and you get a much softer and fluffy mug cake. I have a 800 watt microwave and mine takes one minute 15 seconds. Thank you Chef John!

Protip! I always keep a few bananas in my freezer. Bananas sort of macerate and turn a beautiful even brown when frozen and turn out very sweet and delicious. And when they thaw I use them for so much more than mugcakes like pastry creams, choux fillings or smoothies.

Maybe the only thing I miss from having a microwave is mug cakes, but the last thing I need is the ability to make a cake in a couple minutes so it's a backend blessing that I no longer have one.

Just made your original banana bread recipe yesterday and was pleasantly surprised to find this mug version.
Loved the simple tip on cleaning up the presentation on cup #2!

This bloke needs his own show, cookbooks, pots and pans and so forth line. Or, go into voice over. I can literally close eyes and listen to him and vision everything going on.

Instead of going out to buy that blow torch. can't we just melt and caramelise some sugar on a pan and then drizzle over? I mean. we are after all, lazy slobs for our sugared tops

If you'd rather cook it in the oven, how long, (if you put the batter in oven proof ramekins, and at what temperature would you bake them at? Would 30 mins at 350F be enough?
