I had a non-traditional version of this soup many years ago at a Chinese restaurant. It's one of my favorite foods of all time, and I've been dreaming of it since. It's an Australian thing to have a barbecue on New Years - either eve or day. Have friends, neighbours, family over and cook up steak and sausages and have that with salad, which is always awesome on a hot day!

As a child of a southern USA mom, we have fried chicken, collard greens, cornbread, beans and rice on New Years! They each represent money whether it means coins or cash bills!

In North Carolina, on new years, we eat Collard Greens (money) and black eyed peas (luck. Also couples kiss right at midnight for a good love life that year!
