Intel Unbends Its CPUs: 285K RL-ILM vs. Standard ILM Laser, Pressure, & Thermal Benchmarks

Sponsor: Montech King 95 Pro on Amazon https://geni.us/C5P2 We're investigating Intel's RL-ILM vs. Standard ILM on its new Arrow Lake CPUs, or the Core Ultra 200 lineup (Ultra 9 285K, Ultra 5 245K, and Ultra 7 265K). Intel has an optional RL-ILM (Reduced Load Independent Loading Mechanism) that appears to be present on most high-end boards right now; however, lower end boards will possibly have the cheaper Standard ILM, which more closely mirrors previous Intel ILM solutions. It's crazy that Steve can speak Chinese and is in Texas where I'd assume there would be some Latin community but can't read Lotes (that'd be something like loh-tess) hahaha
Edit: Extra. Lote means lot as in parking lot not lot as in quantity. Lotes would be the plural.
Aurebesh & Klingon professional, defeated by simple Spanish, the headline read. Jokes aside, I doubt it's Spanish.
Great video, these technical things are super interesting (when done by someone like you, so it's entertaining and we also learn). Must be a lot of work for the testing, the research and all.

I need a new workstation, and it's literally a coin toss between 9950 and 285, both CPUs are good for my workflow, gaming doesn't matter for this PC. The biggest difference in favor of Intel are the motherboards. But I'm seeing these strange errors pooping in Windows. And now I'm undecided, and afraid to toss a coin. If I buy Intel, I now know which cooler I need to buy. Thanks GamerNexus and all the Steves out there.
High Tech note on the motherboard: Do not use m.2 3 or 4 (steal PCIe lanes). I will try to remember!

Alexander valdemir kowaliuk here, I sincerely appreciate the scientific approach to tech that your doing I don't understand how it could be done in any other way yet your one of the few that are doing more than just reading the box spec's which I'm very able to accomplish on my own , so thank you again, I hope to see one episode on finding deals on used gaming laptops it's what I'm in the market for and with prices as high as they are regular people like myself literally can't buy a new system if I had to .

The seen a few decent contact frames around $20 but never tried one
Not everyone that uses them sees improvement, and some even find them unusable, where they won't boot when using a contact frame.
The claim of the CPU bending over time is Nonsense. This is about extremely tiny deflection, it's not going to bend over time.
To be real the only thing that ever fooks with PC's is Bad WINDOWS UPDATES & dumb than dumber driver issues there the main reason blue screens exits nothing else matters

Out of interest, and forgive me if this is covered elsewhere, but are you taking a quantity of each model and laser scanning and this is in essence the average or is this a single sample I wonder based on manufacturing variables if another of the same unit looks wildly different or not.
Also, with the height variations we are talking here, that's compensated for with the thermal interface surely and if you wanted a completely flat IHS for optimal contact, wouldn't you just lap it down

I _again_ wonder, why we need an ILM in the first place when for _bigger_ processors, Intel had relied wholly upon the weight of a cooler and tension from the screws for holding the processor in place. All any hardware manufacturer needs to do, if anything is to be learned from the CAMM / CAMM2 standard is create an interposer to mate together pads on the mainboard and processor; the interposer can hold the processor in place, being the Socket and the cooler clamps it down.

You have to let vendors clear their stock of the old MB mounts first! if intel just blanked forced this now vendors with millions in tooling and parts would be pissed! I would be as well if I was one. intel has to allow time for a transition, and let them reduce their current supply. it will come with time. and as we all kinda know most of this stuff matters little for performance as our current cooling/chips already gives most users great results.

Need some help! Current computer is core i7-12700 running windows 10. Just built a new one with core i9-12900 and loaded Windows 11. Why 12900, not comfortable switching to AMD or Intel's newest processors. On the new build, its now asking for the activation code. Since I have Windows 10 on the current computer, can I use that activation code (if I can find it) Or go those 'winkey' websites to get a code

They should just sell a version of their CPU without the lid like the old days... Remember getting an AMD CPU in the early 2000s and it would just be the die with four bits of rubber on each corner Why can't we have that instead of having to risk breaking it delidding ourselves You gain so much performance delidding that Intel really would benefit right now in their current slump with gamers.

points at screen I haven't seen that shirt before. It's on the store. Did I miss an announcement somewhere Was it getting announced in a video that was supposed to air before this one but the schedule got shuffled around Am I just losing my mind (it's election day, so probably)
Oh well, looks cool, I appreciate a nice white shirt, gonna go order one now.

Speaking of mounting sockets, I've hear at least 3 friends of my gaming group (and we're not that many actually, so the stat is curious) with AMD Ryzen processors that have had issues with bent pins, while I've never heard anyone using intel experiencing that problem. Is that just a coindicence or is it a more widespread issue

always love your content and humor, especiaeamlly cutting away from yourself and towards anyone else in the room, very funny. anyway, I heard Arrow Lake was a really good content CPU and being a content creator and not a gamer would it be a fair question to ask whether it would be a good choice for me in my next build

I can see so many people ruining their motherboards when they try and do this without a test bench to rest the motherboard on. The CPU can still easily fall out while changing the backplate, so it might be a good idea to fix it in place with a piece of tape so you don't accidently touch the inside of the socket.

bent cpus are the future. just like bendable, foldable smartphones that capture the radness of flip phones, when you could REALLY hang up on someone with authority instead of lightly tapping a non-physical icon.
i dont know how that has any relevance to CPUs, all i know is get bent or get left behind.

reply

When it comes to swapping out the different ILM's, wouldn't it make more sense (and also be a lot easier) to swap out one half of it at a time, thus preventing the backplate from falling away or losing alignment with the motherboard holes Or are the backplates between the two solutions also different
reply

Considering how hot some of those cpus can run, have you tried preheating the CPU to see if it looks any different A quick oven bake at 80C or so. And it would at least make for entertaining content. You could comment on how it's still not as hot as it gets when Intel messes up their microcode.

If AMD could just get their terrible GPU division in order they'd be a powerhouse in the tech space. They already kneecapped Intel with X3D CPUs, all they have to do is get their shit together with their terrible GPUs to be back in the game completely.

A chill and completely oblivious video considering what's going on now... haha is this the escape I needed
Basically looking at the comments, no one's giving a hint of anxiety that a really impactful election is going on at this very moment huh lol

reply

So yeah new normal will be buy an aftermarket ILM. Or contact frame. In last 3 systems of mine I have used contact frame anyways. They build inferior things and we accept it and it becomes normal to get proper solution in the aftermarket scene. GG

Can’t say my 12900k in my gigabyte aorus elite ax z790 has any cooling issues or uneven pressure on the socket all cores stay within a few degrees of one another.. around 30-50c while gaming, depending on load and high 70s under stress test
